If I got a laptop with 1366x768 native res. and slipped ina blu-ray drive, would bluray's play at full 1366x768? Will it look good on a 15 in. screen and will it downscale to the native 1366x768 without any problems?

It's the same aspect ratio so it should downscale ok(as in without distortion), but the quality of the image will depend on the quality of the screen as well as the GPU.

Probably the biggest factor is the quality of the transfer to Blu-ray. They usually clean things up a lot when doing a transfer to Blu.

    Blu-ray is completely downgradeable.

The new laptop I ordered, I specifically got the GPU upgrade because I planned to watch blu-rays on it. Thats $80 for the drive and an extra $100 for the GPU but I think its worth it.

Depends on the video render and the video resizer selected.

So if I got the Asus g51vx-Rx05 with the GTX 260m it would downscale to 1366x768 fine?

Generally, as long as your software settings are fine.

Make sure your settings are properly configured. I have a problem with full screen blu ray at that resolution. Not sure if its the program or not. Working on a fix.

Well it's more a question of the GPU/chipset/software but yes, it can affect the performance. Perfect example is that Intel made 2 versions of the GMA4500, one which can supposedly handle HD content(with an according different chipset) and one which can't.

Yes, there shouldn't be any issue with downscaling. Blu Rays themselves are meant to be able to downscale(for TVs with 720p). If you have issues it's mostly due to software settings as others have pointed out.

Think that's only with desktops. All notebooks are GMA 4500M HD.

What Bluray drives will work in the Asus g51vx-Rx05? And how good/clear does 1366x768 look on a 15.6 inch? Can you see the pixels from 12 inches away and is it comparable to 1920x1080 on a 21.5 inch, maybe slightly worse?

Even if you had a really weak GPU (weaker, say, that the GMA 4500MHD), not all would be lost. Your CPU load might be higher but if your CPU isn't very weak, too, you're still fine.

I often watch Blu-Rays (more precisely, their iso image) on my really old D620 with Intel GMA 950 and T7200. It downscales fine to my 1440 x 900 screen (there are usually black bars, so idk to what resolution it is downscaled). I'm using PowerDVD 9 plus VirtualCloneDrive for playback.
