my laptop came with 512mb ddr 2700 memory.

i was thinking about getting a 1gb ddr 2700 memory to add on top of the 512mb.

    will this create any conflict?

i was told that its best to use the same memory type.

or should i get another 512mb and call it a day

You can add a 1GB stick. If it came with the laptop make sure the manufacturer didn't just put in 2x256MB sticks.

It all depends on what you do with the laptop. Most users that aren't gamers should be good with 1GB total, but gamers usually max it out about 1.5GB to 2GB.

Yeah, there should be no problems using different size memory. I have been using 1GB+256MB for quite some time now and have not encountered any issue. The only thing that matters is that you get the correct memory and from a good manufacturer.
