It appears the p35k will receive an upgraded 800m-series GPU and be marketed as the p35r (see text mid-way down on the page). I wonder if this will decrease the price of the p35k any.

    Hey all,

Has anyone had any issues with transferring to SSD from HDD on the CF1 setup? The BIOS is 100% locked into Secure Boot mode even after going thru UEFI disable steps...

It seems this is preventing me from selecting the SSD as the new boot option instead of the Windows Boot manager / 750GB HDD.

It has been a great laptop, especially after update that silenced most of the overkill fan noise! I'm beginning to realize maybe I should have gone with the CF2, however. I bought a Crucial M500 240GB mSATA and thought it would be an easy install... :)

    Thanks ahead,

Nope was super simple. Used a USB->SATA adaptor that I had lying around and whatever software came with a Crucial m4 that I bought for work to copy everything from the built-in drive to my Samsung EVO. Shut things down, swapped the drives, and was done. I did not leave the original 750 GB HDD in the computer.

Posting a followup after owning a few months.

    Love the laptop overall, but...

    1. The laptop is super flimsy and flexes a lot. After using it a while I just don't feel comfortable picking it up with one hand. I also have a little Lenovo u310 that's really solid and was only 500$. The hardware isn't comparable but the build quality is so much better. Track pad on the Lenovo is better too. More responsive than the p35k.

    2. Even tho smart manager is set to manual screen brightness, the light sensor will cause my screen to flicker when sitting at my bar. There's several pretty bright lights directly above the monitor, so it's no surprise. However, manual means manual... Shouldnt the sensor not be functioning?

    3. The paint is chipping all over the top and sides. I use this laptop everyday. I move it a lot for multiple presentations a day. I carry a clipboard on top of the laptop and some books and other things. I added to the bottom of my clipboard (plastic and metal) those soft cloth like things from IKEA that you would put under chair legs so they don't scratch your floor. I scratched up my old laptop (macbook) pretty badly with the clipboard. It didn't bother me cause it could take the punishment. I feel like I really need to baby this one, and I do. Nevertheless, I have little specks of missing paint here and there.

    4. It's fast and I love it anyway. I don't even use my desktop anymore. I do some quick video editing for presentations all on the laptop. I backup with synctoy and the hotswappable / home server for double backups just in case. It never makes any noise. I leave it on stealth even when video editing and a second monitor attached. Occasionally, I switch to auto when encoding, but most times I forget. If it was more durable it would be the laptop I've always wanted. It still is, but damn you Gigabyte for skimping.

Windows 8 is awesome too. Get classic shell and stop crying people. I do have some issues with VPN, but otherwise I've found easy workarounds for minor annoyances. Haven't seen the metro screen since installing classic shell.

    Happy computing,
    L

Got this laptop last week from XoticPC in the US, so far I really like the P35K. After receiving the laptop, I performed a clean install of Windows 8.1 and Arch Linux. The system is really fast, the screen is very nice, and the fans are silent during normal use- I can only hear the HDD motor noise. The keyboard isn't bad, and the touchpad works, although I'm still getting used to it. Everything in Windows works and is perfect. I haven't tested gaming performance yet, so I'll have to leave that for the future. As for Linux, I was able to install core stuff without errors, I ran into some issues:

    1. The touchpad does not get recognized by the kernel. I am booting in EFI mode, and the only way to get the touchpad working is to first boot into Windows, then RESTART into Linux. Shutting down and then booting into Linux doesn't work. Restarting from Windows into Linux makes the touchpad available 100% of the time, so I'm guessing there's something going on between the kernel and the EFI.

    2. I couldn't get sound to work. ALSA detects the Realtek ALC282 chip, but I don't see sound bars in alsamixer; only the "front" and "speaker" has bars, not in "headphones" or "speakers". I might have to resort to getting a USB DAC. Sound works flawlessly in Windows, although I'm not a fan of the speakers on this laptop. Also, the default card is set to "Intel HDA". I'll keep looking around for any fixes to the sound problem.

Although booting into Linux takes significantly longer because I have to first boot into Windows and then restart, I am happy with this laptop. I guess I'll have to baby this laptop, hopefully it will last me through college.

If anyone came across fixes to the above Linux issues, I will appreciate your help.

Yes, it flexes a little but I have no qualms picking it up with one hand. When I set it back down though, I do it gently. I've owned an MSI that was much worse.

The Intel graphics card software may be to blame. If you haven't already, try this: right-click the desktop, select "Graphics Properties", click "Power", and turn off "Display Power Saving Technology". This feature adjusts screen brightness according to what colours are on the screen, independent of the light sensor.

Is it possible to undervolt the GPU? The temps are crazy when playing BF4. One core even reached 99C, and I'm hitting 90C consistently on both CPU and GPU. And this is with the IC Diamond thermal compound.
I can undervolt the CPU by ~100mV using Intel XTU, but MSI Afterburner doesn't properly recognize the 765m.

Any tips on temp reduction is appreciated. The temps above are with the back raised ~2cm off the surface.

So i rolled back to windows 7 because windows 8 was too crappy for me. one thing that bothered me and i know this is funny but if you look at the start button on the keyboard, the logo shows the new windows 8 logo. and windows 7 was different and old all over the system so here is what i did to feel fresh hehe i even restored the OEM System info in the properties. i even got the gigabyte smart manager for windows 8 to work in 7, because the windows 7 version doesnt have the same functions. let me know if you want to do the same. now all my system has the new logos and it feels nice to me. Windows 7 is so much faster and smoother, its unreal how ty windows 8 makes this system.
BTW if anyone has a problem where the system says low memory while gaming, you have to change the virtual memory size. i had that problem with windows 8 but windows 7 sets its automatically to use all the ram available. windows 8 had me locked at 2GB ram:mad:

Hey, this isnt suppose to happen, especially with GPU, it should just go up to 60 or so. but CPU its the same here, it goes to 90.
but here are the options you have...
bf4 isnt cpu intensive so just change the affinity in the task manager to about 4 cores.
second option is undervolt and slow down the speed a little with the program throttestop. its free and amazing. i used it for a while.

Has anyone have problems with hard drives getting disconnected or not connected at all when connecting in on USB 3.0? I've been having problems with this and I have a 2 weeks old P35. Granted, I did updated it to Win8.1

My previous laptop never had problems with finnicky USB hard drive connections. I'm using a Silicon power a80 and a Western Digital MyBook 4TB

Sorry to hear that. Does it happen with USB 2.0? I'm sure you've tried both USB 3.0 ports? I connect a WD Passport through USB 3.0 frequently with no problems. Also Windows 8.1. Do you have a USB 3.0 thumbdrive, does it disconnect as well?

I didn't have a problem until the 8.1 upgrade?? After that my USB 3.0 drives would / wouldn't get recognized by the USB 3.0 ports. They worked fine in my USB 2.0 ports and fine in USB 3.0 on my desktop machine so it had, for me, to be new drivers from Microsoft. I raised it with Microsoft and a tech took over my machine (which I really disliked) and even he could not sort it out. He tried all the things I had already done anyway. In the end he said I should raise it with Gigabyte and I should do a complete re-install. Funny how it was working fine before 8.1.

In the end I uninstalled the USB 3.0 drivers from Microsoft/Gigabyte and installed the latest Intel(R)_USB_3.0_eXtensible_Host_Controller_Driver. Everything went back to as it was before the 8.1 update with USB 3.0 drives recognized and working at the correct speeds. I hope that helps.

I'm thinking of buying this notebook with i7, gtx760, 16gb - price will drop if the v2 is released.

The biggest concern: fan noise in idle, after the bios update, what about fan noise during office tasks, browsing or in idle? Is the fan turned of? Is it jumping? Had bad experience with the new gs60...

Need the notebook for student tasks (library, excel, word, java coding, statistic calculations) and for gaming (old games like hearts of iron, cs1.6, dod source, Europa universalis, rise of flight).

Fan noise is pretty much non-existent in idle. It's turned off most of the time when I'm doing office tasks. I'm using my P35K right now in a library and it's silent. Browsing a bunch of flash-heavy sites simultaneously turns on the fan at minimum speed.

The noise is loud at max speed, but it's bearable. The rpm doesn't bounce around. But for games that you mentioned, the fan should stay below full speed.

    Hello,

Does anyone know how to turn on Adaptive V-Sync in this laptop ? In NVIDIA Control Panel, Vertical Sync, I only see option On/Off/Use 3D Application setting. I don't see Adaptive V-Sync here, eventhough I have selected NVIDIA as prefered Graphics processor.

I use NVIDIA driver from Gigabyte site as well as from NVIDIA site, same thing, Adaptive V-Sync option does not show up.

    Thanks.

I'm looking to purchase this laptop for college. I'm going to be an incoming freshman going into computer science and was wondering what I should know about this laptop before I buy it. I'd read more into it, but unfortunately this thread is 173 pages long and I don't have that much time so I'd really appreciate it if someone knowledgable on the topic could help me out. Does it get too hot? Is the build quality good? How's the keyboard, speakers, performance, battery life, etc? Any and all help is much appreciated, thanks.

CS major here. I posted a short review of my purchase experience here in page 171. The kernel doesn't recognize the elantech touchpad when cold booting into Linux; for some strange reason you have to first boot Windows, then reboot into Linux. Gigabyte support won't help me for Linux issues. I had to mess with ALSA configs to get onboard speakers working, but it works now.
I installed Arch Linux and haven't tried installing more common distros like Ubuntu, so the experience may be different.

Running Windows on this machine is flawless. My machine does reach 90s when using full resources and the exhaust area gets hot. When idle, it's really quiet and only feels warm. The build quality is good. The speakers are average for laptops, not great. The tweaking settings in the Dolby application that comes in Windows 8 will make the sound a lot louder and clearer. Unfortunately, it doesn't support Windows 7. The keyboard is all right, although this machine seems to attract a lot of finger oil compared to my previous machines from Lenovo and Dell..

I can easily get 3-4 hours of battery life on both Windows and Linux when consuming moderate system resources like running a bunch of programs, web browsing, etc. I can get up to 5 hours if I'm mainly using text editors and browsers. The battery life has been great for college use.

I think this laptop is great for college students, Gigabyte didn't mess up on performance and build quality. Excellent gaming and overall performance. Running Linux has a minor touchpad issue, but that's only mildly annoying (also, who needs mice in CLI? :p). There aren't that many laptops that's thin and can handle heavy gaming.

P35G here but I noticed ELAN touchpad being off in Windows 8 after cold boot. I tracked it down to hybrid shutdown. If I turn it off in Windows (Google for turning off hybrid shutdown using bcdedit) then on all subsequent boots touchpad is working. It's possible your bootup to Windows and then shutting down messes it for Linux.

When I was on Windows 8.1, I never had issues with ELAN on Windows. I also disabled hybrid boot when installing Linux (and Windows 7 doesn't have hybrid boot feature). I tried hitting the touhcpad on/off button on the F keys, but it didn't do anything for me (in Linux).

Anyways thanks for the suggestion! I might mess around with boot settings when I reinstall Windows 8, but right now I don't have the time to reconfigure everything from scratch..

I'm not sure if this matters but the trackpad issue in Linux happens with both BIOS and EFI mode.
