Hi guys,
I searched the net quite hard, but perhaps anybody here at the Gigabyte-forum knows more: the P27K with its GTX765M is a solid laptop, but at Anandtech the claimed in the article about Maxwell, that the P27K will get an update, too (like the P34G V2).
does anybody know more about this? they sell the smallest version of the P27K here in germany for just 699 (with i5-4200M, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD without OS), which is just an insane offer. but getting the same laptop with an GTX860M even for a little more cash sounds ver tempting, as the GTX765M is okay for gaming, but not sooo future-safe as the 860M.
thanks in advance pals!

many thanks! so they announced it just recently. but mid april sounds good, though they only say something about variants with i7. well, I will have my eyes open, and now I know what new name I have to look for.

We are all hoping these new models have MAXWELL GPU's and not KEPLER.
-
well, on the P27G it wouldn't matter that much, I think. this notebook ran cool as far a I heave read with the GTX765M. so it would handle the GTX860M with a Kepler as well.
though I agree, that a Maxwell (also in terms of overclocking, if needed) would be even nicer. -
I wonder if we'll see an updated version of the X7 with 860M SLI.
The 870M seems not too far off the pace of SLI 765M, plus you don't get potential SLI issues and you do get working Optimus, so the GS70 Stealth with 870M is sort of more appealing than this to me, however I'm guessing SLI 860M will be nearing the performance of 780M in most cases, which would be an amazing solution in a NB this thin. -
Have ordered and paid for mine, expect delivery early next week, see here:
GIGABYTE P27G v2 gaming laptop with GTX 860M 2GB graphics
Base model only, will be installing 500gb Samsung Evo mSata, along with 2 1tb Samsung Evo SSD's. And, 3x8gb Corsair Vengeance RAM. Finally, a clean install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
Will in due course, and if there is enough interst and time permitting, take snaps of unboxing etc. Plus, when the above have been installed. -
thx for the info.
well, at least I would appreciate a short review. especially on the screen, the temps (while gaming) and the fan noise. and that win7-solution would be my solution of choice, too. so any experience on that topic would be swet, too. -
OK, here goes. However, you'll have to bear with me. Have had more than a few beers! Sorry, no snaps of unboxing.
Initial thoughts when unpacking etc, it's a behmoth. But, in view of what my usual production machine is, this is not unexpected. Was disappointed in that the battery is an integral part of the machine. I prefer to leave them out unless the unit is going on an outing.
Initial boot loaded W8.1 x64 with some bloatware (being WoT, Acrobat Reader and some other minor annoyances), after rebooting moved along quite smoothly. It was delivered with an HGST 7200rpm 1TB spinner that contains a Factory Image (may be useful).
However, after initial boot I shut it down to get to the hardware. Removed the large base panel expecting to see an mSata slot, at least 1 HD slot & 3 RAM slots. Alas, this is not the case, for those that are Australian delivery. What I found was the main HD bay (C Drive) and 2 RAM slots one of which was taken by a Transcend 8GB stick (DDR3L 1600 SO). The machine was delivered with 16GB RAM.
Looked very hard indeed, but there is no immediate access to an mSata slot, nor the other RAM slot. What i wanted to do was install a Samsung 500GB mSata Evo as the C Drive & 2 Samung Evo 1TB's as storage (perhaps in Raid 0). I also have a spare Intel AC 7260 Dual Band Wireless Card that I was hoping to install. Alas, the inaccessabilty to some slots/bays has caused some frustration. Ought to point out there is a separate bay for an additional HDD under a another cover.
The setup thus far is: pulled out the Transcend stick replaced with 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance, thought there may have been a conflict but there was not. Took out the 1TB spinner and replaced that with a Samsung 750GB Evo SSD, then installed W7 x64 Pro.
The included Gigabyte Drivers' Disk does not do an Autorun with W7. However, most components will run indivially excepting the RealTek drivers'. Simply means that indivial drivers' for LAN, Card Reader & WAN have to be dowloaded from manufacturers website. Have had these issues before with other lappy's, so not a problem.
With regard to the additional apps included on the enclosed Utility Driver Disk, most will work. Although, what is missing is Smart Manager, and it was this utility that encouraged my purchase. Which goes onto my next para.
Like yourself, I too was concerned about noise ie: a constantly whiring & whining fan. Previously had an MSI G70 Stealth that sounded like a jet engine, nothing stealthy about it, that's why it lasted less than 6 months. This machine is fine, took me a while to figure out that if the green light on the right hand side 2 below the Turbo button is on then it is running on the Intel GFX and not the nVidia (CPUID Pro current temps 37.0C).
Ascetics of the machine: Screen is great (perhaps, even at low settings a little bright, but still working on this), I have ageing eyesight so it is a very delicate setting to find the ideal, this also depends on the time of day. Love the discreet backlight lighting. Palmrest, supposedly rubberized feel. Certainly not on this machine, however, it is very cool I guess that it works. Key layout is fine, I'm used to taking longer hand/fingure movements so this too is taking some time to get used to. Yet just writing that last sentence did not have to move my wrists at all. This be good.
Keys themselves, little travel yet they seem to prefer a harder hit if you like, perhaps this is an element of the "Gaming" design of the machine.
Soundblaster Audio is also working a treat & it has a VH Audio Deck for Gaming.
FWIW I'll upload an Anvil Storage Utilities SS re performance:
Seems I cannot upload/link for the aforementioned. What I can tell you is that even after installing many of my usual production apps the Anvil Storage Utilities Score is 14480.80
What I did neglect to mention is BIOS setup. It s an American Megatrends etc: the beauty of this particular setup is the option in the final settings to default either W8 or W7, this saves so much grief when it comes to UEFI/BIOS settings. -
well, first at all: a great THANKS for sharing your experiences! summed up, those leave me quite happy. I must admit, I AM a little confused about the drive-slots missing. I know pictures from the P27K and there it was totally easy to acces the drive-slots. kinda weird.
so does the smart manager not work at all under Win7? or did I just get you wrong?
bonsu: they really installed World of Tanks als "bloatware"? rofl! (I love to roll out in my shiny tanks! ) -
