I have one quick question for the owners. How easy it is to change the keyboard?

I'm having trouble finding an international keyboarded Aero 15 in Europe and I got to the point of just buying a qwertz one and changing it myself.

I want to do the same but didn't try because it might break some keys... anyway I did a RMA because there was "dust" dead pixels on the screen.... and was a bit overheating (92-93 on CPU, 80 GPU) , but I think I will buy it again but this time on Hidevolution so they can repaste and check for dead pixels.

Wow, heavy customisation plans going on here.
    I would never touch this.
Thanks guys, for this informative thread.
Just signed up to give an overview of my experience so far.
    1. Same keyboard issue -almost fixed with the firmware update inside of Gigabyte Fusion (click on gear top right corner)
    2. Wasn't able to update audio driver vie smart update. Stuck in deinstallation. I stopped that. Seems to be no issue, but never leaves a good feeling.
    3. Was reading the long discussion about SSD. I do not have time for a fresh installation, as I'll be on tour for next three weeks and all my needed programs are already installed, what took a while.
So I went the "cheap" way and bought a 1TB Crucial for data AND another 16GB of Kingston RAM for same prize of an Samsung 960 evo. Ram will Boost my system more, I hope.
    4. I got one of the first AERO15 available in Germany. The config is a bit "cheaper" than in most tested systems. :(
Win 10 home / SSD is a Transcend MTS800 - which is half speed of the LIte ON in most tested Systems./ installed RAM is one Kingston 16GB - which I hopefully identified correctly via Kingston website:
    http://www.kingston.com/de/memory/search?DeviceType=3&Mfr=GIG&Line=Aero series Aero15&Model=96493
    I'll get both pieces tomorrow.

I am coming from midrange Lenovo mobile workstations but was fed up with Quadro graphic cards as I am going more into real-time simulation on the one hand, video editing and 3D stuff on the other.
Most of my programs are very hungry for graphical power. Quadros delivers this only for an amount of money I simply can't afford and is not delivered in 15" format.
Second I was looking for lightweight and long battery life, as I often use the laptop just for remote via LAN of WIFI.
Non of the 1070GTX laptops I have seen were offering a decent battery life.Read something about GTX1070 not supporting Optimus?
I wanted a real LAN port as I hate adapters.
Thunderbolt 3 as I think of using a docking station.
It needs to have a good cooling as while I am travelling it can be -20° up to +45° Celsius.
We'll see how that will work. :) Will take a spare laptop with me.
Anyway the AERO15 offers a lot of my wishlist.
If it would be a 2in1 concept with a kind of cintiq monitor with pressure sensitive pen support, it would be my dream computer.
But I needed a new laptop now and couldn't wait anymore.

I'll will see if I will regret going the hybrid gamer workstation way.
I honestly never heard before that Gigabyte is building laptops :D

I believe the issue is that Optimus (battery life) and G-Sync (variable refresh rate) don't work together, so notebook manufacturers have to choose one or the other. Manufacturers targeting high-powered desktop replacement, where the machine is often plugged in anyway, tend to choose G-Sync. Whereas the Aero 15 and others targeting mobile use may go for Optimus / battery life.

As far as I'm concerned, every laptop that offers G-Sync should have a bios switch for Optimus / iGPU the way the Clevo P650 series does. Give me the *choice* even if it means requiring a bit more technical know-how.

Wow I didn't know that was even possible. I'd love to have that choice too. Do you think that's something Gigabyte could add later as a purely software (firmware) update, or is there underlying hardware design that might be required and isn't present on the Aero 15?

I actually have no idea about how it's implemented to be completely honest, but I do know that one of the most attractive features of the P650 series is that I can go into the bios and flip the MUX switch and set my computer to use the dGPU or iGPU.

I believe as consumers and enthusiasts that we need more control over our systems, not less. Why this is not a standardized feature is beyond me. I'll happily pay for it if it should cost more.

From what little information there is, "Max-Q" is a software adjustment that lowers GPU voltage and frequency to find the most efficient working point between full power and throttling. There may be other optimizations, but it seems pretty certain that a Max-Q 1070 will not perform as well as a stock 1070 running in a bigger notebook with a better cooling system. If that is true, it's very possible that a 1070 Max-Q GPU in a notebook with poor cooling will perform no better than a stock 1060 in a notebook with good cooling;-) So, yes, I would not be surprised if a Max-Q 1070 appears in an Aero 15, especially since MSI is putting one in their GS63VR that had a 1060. The question is if it will perform significantly better than a 1060 since the cooling system is unchanged.

Man the guys at @GenTechPC work fast! I just got my shipping confirmation, should be arriving next Tuesday! So I decided to go with IC Diamond instead of CLU. I'm flying out of the country soon so I didn't want them to waste time and recheck temps to make sure everything is good, you can't go wrong with IC Diamond either, super stoked now!

Second SSD and another 16GB Ram is installed.
Here one really see the difference between mobile worksations and consumer products.
As on my Lenovo W520 / HD an ram was available via one click service openings, the Gigabyte wants you to remove 13 screws.
Luckily I heard before that opening should start at SD Reader - OK, in my case it was the opposite side, but anyway it wasn't easy to open.
One needs to be a bit brave as it needs some careful strength.

The foam between Battery and second SSD is a bit thick and leaves a bit pressure on second SSD. That is kind of uncool.
There is a screw already installed to fix the second SSD. Was curious if there is one or not, as I saw it already without in one video.
All in all no big deal to install.
Crucial 1TB MTS 300 works with 528MB/s read and 512MB/s write, which is OK for Data.
If I will upgrade again, I would replace the 512GB Transcend MTS 800 against a faster 1TB.
But not now, time is gone.

Ram from Kingston is not exact same product, which is a bit ....
Regarding HWinfo64 everything it same, except SDRAM Manufacture is Micron Tech. on original and SK Hynix on new.
But timing is identical.Hope this won't be an issue.

    Pros
    - Up to a 20c reduction in CPU temps
    - Fans run at lower speeds as a result

    Cons
    - Requires so much preparation beforehand & attention to detail when applying
    - If you don't follow the procedure properly or apply too much, it could leak & fry the motherboard components
    - Going by various reviews, GPU temps are not greatly improved when compared to standard pastes.

In my opinion unless you're well off and can afford to replace the laptop if it goes wrong, don't delve into it.

    Liam.

I believe the F3/F4 functionality is provided by Gigabyte's Smart Manager software? Does the brightness control from within that control panel function?

    Hello Everyone,

i am waiting for my aero 15 to arrive and while preparing things i bought a 960 Evo SSD as well. Is there someone who could provide any info on the following:
    - does a clean install remove the Pantone calibration? Do i need to backup something that cannot be downloaded from Gigabyte's site?
    - I would like to get an extra charger for the office but i am not able to locate any store? Would a universal charger work or are there any risks?

    thank you all in advance,

Sorry, I really don't know anything about what could cause this file to be cleared or could have it restored. Just feels like smart policy to me to have it stored somewhere in a safe location (like a cloud drive, etc.) so you're prepared for whatever may happen.

Those who ask for the .icc files, you do realize your screen will not even be close to how it initially was, right? The laptops are individually calibrated, one by one. So in theory, the .icc files are different.

I don't know what the easiest way would be, but some ideas you could try include:

    1. Are you sure the clean service removed it? If it's a selective clean vs. a full wipe it might have left that directory alone.

    2. If you have your original factory SSD, and did not re-partition it, I believe there is a recovery partition on the drive that probably includes the profile.

    3. If you made a USB recovery drive prior to the cleaning, it might have been copied onto that.

    4. Check if your windows re-install process left behind a directory called "windows.old" - if so it might be there.

    5. You may be able to ask Gigabyte support to email it to you - hopefully they saved a copy of each calibration prior to shipment.

It would not surprise me if the information for the calibration was baked into some semi-permanent storage somewhere in the system (firmware, etc.) but we just haven't heard the details of it yet.

Quick update: my first aero 15 arrived from Newegg but it was the bright orange color when I ordered the black. I might have dealt with it, but Windows wouldn't activate saying "this key is being used on another device" and the left shift key wouldn't work 75% of the time. Got a replacement from Newegg today and this one is at least the right color, but it has 4 dead pixels! Going back tomorrow unfortunately. I might wait a bit before ordering another one.

Be on the lookout for open box units on Newegg...

Re - 1. I had a look at the directory again, and was able to find a list of profiles, perhaps the clean install didn't remove it?

Comparing the two, I think I still have the colour profile after reinstalling win10... thoughts?

Also in regards to problem earlier i.e. adjusting the brightness using the function, I managed to fix it after installing the latest Smart Manager Driver :)

Yes, I believe GGG_CMN15D7 is the pantone calibration profile. IIRC the last 7 characters are found in the Innolux panel's identification string (which you can see with hardware inspection software like aida.)

    Hi

Just bought a new Aero 15 (my first Gigabyte) and found it great thus far except for :

The loose hinges. It closes forward as described by some. That is fine. However, my screen also gradually flips backward to the max point once I open the lid beyond a certain point, which can be a bit irritating after a while (due to screen angle changes).

Do those who have forward hinge issue also have the backward issue or is mine just a really bad unit?

    Thanks

Return it, it is not normal. Mine only looses when the angle is smaller than about 15 degree, otherwise it will stay tight.

Ok guys, thanks a lot for the reply. Its good to know before i started messing around with it.

Is there an installation process for the color profiles or they just have to be copied in the same folder?

With respect to my second question i guess noone has used an extra charger for the laptop??

    Cheers

I've been contemplating this purchase for awhile now. I love a 14 inch form factor, but with a 15 inch screen is amazing. I am so torn. I'm not sure if I am ready to pay the premium right now.

I am contemplating between this and the alienware 13. The gigabyte pretty much fits all my checklists, whereas the alienware fits most. The aw does have an oled panel, but its only 13 inch. And the battery life is like half the gigabyte. But the premium for the gigabyte would be around $700 CAD. Maybe I will let gigabyte mature the brand a little more, and pick up the aw. I really love the bezeless 15 inch screen and the form factor though...

Can anyone chime in their opinion?

I too was contemplating an AW13. In the end, this was a better fit for me.

I'm a CPA and 90% of my usage is connected to a dock with 3 monitors. The 10-key, plus battery life and bigger monitor are a definite plus when I'm mobile out at clients.

    I can't remember, 2 SSD slots on the AW13?

Yes 2 m.2 slots on the aw.

The battery life on the gigabyte is ideal for me, but the robust build of the aw is also ideal. I will be using this for work as well, setting up and servicing fuel dispensers. I have an old robust laptop for dirty work, but I would be using this as my primary clean work laptop.

I know I will definitely be setting up an external monitor at my desk. The gigabyte definitely is a better fit for me, but I have found a company that deals open box, refurbished, and cancelled orders, so the aw would be significantly cheaper for the specs I would be getting.

Yeah, the AW does look more robust. Smaller form factor will be, by design, less fragile.

What kind of real life battery life numbers are people getting?

This unit is actually a little overkill for me, as I don't do much gaming on my laptop. But I need the quad core CPU for video editing, a good sized SSD, the thin form factor, and long battery life. My ideal would be an ultrabook with a 14 or 15 inch screen but you can't seem to get a quad core with those (I'd love to have an HP Spectre 15 for a week to test the video editing on it but I suspect the lack of quad core would be a killer.) And the Dell XPS 15 is fine in terms of power but thread after thread is filled with people returning them, people talking about all the reformatting and reinstalling and repasting and latency and tracking down problems and some just giving up.

Thanks. Returned for a new set and the lid doesn't fall back anymore although it still does close forward at a certain angle. So i guess that is going to be a feature of this laptop.

    Cheers

I'm not sure about you, but they still sell the old Aero 14 here. It includes a 6th gen quad core i7 CPU, a GTX 965M, a 1080p screen, 2 SSD slots and a 95Wh battery. I'm picking one in a month; it prefectly fits my needs as I won't be gaming much. The price is also very intriguing! (1200-ish)

Worth it to wait for the 4K screen?

If you have sharp vision, then it might be worth it for you, but 1080 on a laptop or a phone is simple and just works very well. Whereas 4k has some scaling issues and is slightly blurry when playing at lower resolutions, but the extra detail at 4k is really something, and for many it is worth it. Especially for those in graphic design.

1080 for me on a 15" because I have crap vision.

I hated the handshake between 4k 1080p when connecting my monitors at the office.

Maybe if you were running 4K monitors.

I specifically looked for 1080p only.

IMO, if you want to 4K game, then you'd be better served with an nVidia 1070 or higher.
