Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread over the past few months. Over the past few days I've read the bulk of it and am eagerly awaiting delivery of my own, well-armed with knowledge about what to do and check upon receipt.

It seems to me the first and most important thing to do is create the backup on a USB flash drive. Prior to receiving the unit I'd like to pick one up specifically for the task. Could someone please confirm the minimum size required for this? Any concern over the longevity of the storage medium? What if I need it for recovery in 5 or 10 years from now? Will it still be good?

EDIT: In a streak of "genius", I thought to look for a manual online. In the one that I found, it stated you need a device >20GB to create the backup media. As a side note, if the manual that comes with it is as minimal as the one I found, there is truly little information that comes with this!

Hey guys. First time poster here, happy to have received my Aero 15 yesterday.
One thing I've noticed in my short time using this laptop is that whenever I use headphones while the laptop is plugged in, there is a very noticeable static / hissing noise. This noise goes away whenever I unplug the laptop. I've tested this out with different headphones, and they are all affected by this issue.
Does anyone else experience anything like this? If so, was there any fix for it? I already tried using different outlets, and that didn't resolve it.

On another note, I updated the track pad drivers to Windows Precision which greatly improved performance. If anyone has any recommendations on others things I should do to get the best experience out of this thing, please let me know :) (I tried reading through this forum, but 184 pages is a lot of material to go through...)

OK I figured out when my screen flickers. If I let my screen turn off while the laptop is still on and make the screen turn on with a key press or mouse movement. The screen will flicker between 0 and 20% screen brightness. It does it every time at 20% for about 10 seconds or so. I will see if I can get a video of it with my phone and post a youtube link.

Change in the Realtek settings the input to "headset" instead of "headphone", that is the solution that I have found. ;)

Actually, if some applications are keeping the GPU awake, they will not show up here (such as MSI Afterburner, which keeps the GPU awake but doesn't "use" it).

Hi folks, has anyone gotten it right to plug in a microphone on the Aero?
I have voice dictation software which I want to use with my Aero, I installed the software just after I got the laptop and I could swear it was working then although I only briefly used it? Then I didn't try to use if for a while until today, but now it doesn't seem to detect any sound if I plug a mic into the jack.
Using the same mic on another laptop I do see the levels move so I don't think its the mic.
I tried uninstalling the driver - didn't make any difference...
Any help / input would be greatly appreciated...

    1. Are your realtek settings on headset?
    2. You can set your default recording device at the audio manager in windows
    3. Is the right audio input hardware selected within the software settings?

    Hi MaanKaas.
Its actually a desk microphone but I have tried it in all the positions - headset, desk, array - none makes any difference.
Audio default device is set as Realtek.
As far as #3 is concerned, I'm not sure if there are other places to check.. under "microphone properties" by "jack information" both "digital jack" and "right panel 3.5 jack" show up (but I can't select between them FWIW?

Did you try restarting the computer? All software updated? Are the windows settings for the microphone on along with the realtek along with the sound manager settings? Theres alot of different layers to why it could not work.

    @ Crash525 - yes I had tried a restart (several).
But as an update, I just tried AGAIN to uninstall the mic and driver and another restart and now it seems to be working.. another one of those cases of "Windows - now it doesn't work, now it does, after wasting several hours fiddling"!!

    Thanks for the input folks!

Its very likely a conflict with the software. I had to play with the sound settings to get decent sound out of this. Its good for what it is.

I'm with you on this one. I tried the precision drivers and they didn't feel good. My biggest problem was that when I typed, and my palms accidentally touched the touchpad, the cursor would shift. This does not happen with the elan drivers. I think elan blocks this occurrence. Perhaps, there is a setting to do the same with the precision drivers, but i didn't bother looking. Went back to the native drivers. I use an external mouse most of the time anyways.

I am not hearing any noise from my headphones when the laptop is charging. Try reinstalling the audio driver and muting the microphone. This could also be a hardware problem. Something related to proper grounding of the laptop.

So I just got to my apartment (was testing it at my parents' house before) and the hissing noise suddenly disappeared. Only thing that changed is the outlet the laptop is plugged into. I thought I eliminated that possibility by using different outlets over there, turns out something weird's going on at their house :p

    Anyhow, thanks for your help!

I'm curious, is this option in Realtek HD Audio Manager, or is it in the system sound control panel somewhere?

Typically a grounding issue would be present across the entire circuit, and most homes tend to have all outlets in a room all on the same circuit. It's always possible that the ground wire has become disconnected from one of the outlets, so it (and all other outlets that come after it in the series) has an open ground. If you're interested in checking your outlets you can get an outlet tester for like $7 https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-RT210-Receptacle-Tester/dp/B01AKX3AYE/

But sometimes it's just a matter of EMI from the computer itself - coil whine and insufficient shielding. Apparently that's not the case for you, since your issue went away.

Has anyone noticed that sometimes when you open your laptop after having it closed for a while that it does not ask for a password? Its random for me and yes the box is checked to ask for a password when ever computer wakes from sleep. Also I had noticed that my two finger tap does not work anymore after that. Other than restart any ideas on how to fix either?

It's in the Realtek Audio manager.

I have the same thing, I can't seem to find a fix for it either. The only workaround is to lock your computer before putting it to sleep/hibernate :l

Ah, I figured out where it was just a few minutes ago... And I know why it has static.

    1. The dialog when you plug in a headset or pair of headphones: https://i.imgur.com/cPWwqln.png
    2. The reason why there's white noise: https://i.imgur.com/klJCL77.png
If you select headset in image 1, it rightfully assumes there's a mic. It also enables live monitoring of the mic ("playback volume" shown in image 2). It feeds the mic signal back into the headphones and defaults to 50% volume - I turned it down for the screenshot, but volume is turned up by default.

This means that if you're using a headset you'll hear the noise caused by your mic. If you're using regular headphones but accidentally choose "headset" then it's looping anything present at the shield (the sleeve of the plug) right back into your headphones... Because the microphone conductor for both OMTP and CTIA standards occupies a section of the shield conductor of regular headphones.

    So, long story short:
    • If you're using regular headphones, choose "headphones" in the Realtek popup.
    • If you're using a headset that seems to be noisy, or if you don't want to hear your own voice, go to the Microphone tab in Realtek HD Audio Manager and turn down Playback Volume slider.

If you're referencing the colour shifting, that's because it's using the nvidia GPU for hardware acceleration. As to why that happens, I have no idea, but my workaround is to either turn off HW acceleration for my browser so that the CPU does all the video work, or disable the nvidia GPU through the BIOS and let the onboard graphics handle the acceleration.

PS: I only noticed this issue in chrome, Edge and Opera didn't have this issue.

I picked mine up from the post office this morning and have been in "I've got a new toy" mode since then.

Curiosity: Has anyone figured out a better way to program keyboard profiles, other than the crappy Fusion software? Sure, it works... but not exactly user friendly, eh? I did a quick search through the registry, and took a look at the program folder but nothing popped out at me.

At least maybe a way to back up user data?

I am confused. Is your nvidia GPU configured to run Chrome? Mine isn't, so my understanding was that if the hardware acceleration is on, Chrome runs on the integrated graphics card.

By default, Chrome will run on the integrated graphics, if Chrome sees graphical intensive objects it will process those with the GPU (for example YouTube). If hardware acceleration is turned off Chrome will not use your GPU to process those objects, and even graphical intensive objects will be processed with the integrated graphics card.

You can test this by watching an 8K YouTube video, integrated graphics will lag (HW Acceleration OFF), GPU will run it smoothly (HW Acceleration ON) (if your internet connections allows such high-quality videos)

There are multiple options to enable/disable GPU processing:
    - Disable the GPU totally in boot. (3D Acceleration) (don't really see the point to buy this strong graphical powered device if you do so, haha).
    - Choose to use integrated graphics or GPU for each application (In Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Program Settings. Or right click on shortcut and choose run with powerful processor).
    - Use Hardware Acceleration to give the software permission to use the GPU if it thinks it is needed, even if it's configured with the Integrated graphics settings. (Option in software setting.)

Thank you for the explanation. Let me sleep on it and I will get back to you.

UPDATE: couldn't fall asleep so decided to check your suggestion, here is what I noticed in the task manager performance tab.

    - When hardware acceleration is OFF, Chrome clearly uses CPU - 70% CPU utilization while playing an 8k video from youtube while GPU0 (integrated) is below 10% and GPU1 (nvidia) is 0%. The video is skipping frames and continuously pauses for processing.

    - When hardware acceleration is ON and Chrome is set to run on integrated graphics through Nvidia Control Panel, the video runs smooth. CPU is below 20%, GPU0 is around 50% and GPU1 is 0% and no activity in the GPU activity icon in tray.

-When hardware acceleration is ON and Chrome is set to run on Nvidia graphics through Nvidia Control Panel, the video also runs smooth. CPU is below 20%, GPU0 is around 20% and GPU1 is about 50% and there is Chrome activity in the GPU activity icon in tray.

My understanding is that you can let Chrome use GPU for acceleration, but it does not have access to deciding which GPU to engage while doing so. This decision making is set in the Nvidia Control Panel.

Let me know what you think. I'm curious.

Hi. Not such issue but i have latest intel and nvidia drivers (not the "old" ones given by gigabyte) and when i updated to latest bios battery didn't charge beyond 97% and trackpad's button battery check stopped working as expected: reverting to previous Bios version solved the issues.

Latest bios is faulty, so if you have installed some not "certified by Gigabyte" driver, you should go back to previous Bios or install "official" driver.

    Best regards

Would Aero 15x's 1070 benefit from a G-Sync monitor? I mostly use it with an external monitor, so interested what features it should have.

Oh then I made a small mistake, it will use the iGPU (integrated graphics) on HW Acceleration too, but instead of only CPU. The iGPU apparently is powerful enough to play the 8K video. The laptop preferably uses the iGPU over the GPU because it is more power efficient.
Nvidia GPU will only be activated if it even is more graphic intensive or if it is set to run with GPU at Nvidia Control Panel by default. When setting chrome to run on Nvidia GPU the full program runs with your GPU and also will result in more power loss.

You cannot disable the iGPU since with Nvidia Optimus, your iGPU drives the display and it is closely connected to the CPU to run your device optimized and power efficient. I am not sure if you can specify your HW Acceleration to the dedicated GPU.

Does it help to right click on the desktop, click "Intel Graphics Settings", go to "Video" and disable the color corrections at the "Color Enhancement" and "Image Enhancement" tab?

    Like disable:
    Total Color Correction
    Skin Tone Enhancement *
    Contrast Enhancement *
    Film Mode Detection

No, Aero 15x uses Optimus so it's not compatible with G.Sync. There is no way it benefits from a G-Sync monitor since It's hardware related

I think that may have fixed it. Thanks! I'll edit this post if I get the problem again.

EDIT: Nope, didn't work. I guess it colour shifts when there isn't enough saturation in the picture?

Since the mDP and HDMI ports are directly connected to the dGPU, shouldn't it still work since G-Sync has to run off the nvidia GPU to work?

I would think that Optimus would work through the MiniDP.
