Those who have it is the build quality really that bad compared to msi and Asus? Of course we can't expect apple quality builds as that's only thing good about macbook pro

    Hello,

I've recently bought the p34g-v2, and I tested cpu undervolting with intel XTU.
During the stress test, HWMonitor told me that the cpu package reached 47W max, with default parameters. Is this value normal ?

That result seems ok, as it's exactly the cpu's TDP. However, doing the same test with the p34g first version gives us completely different results : 39W max... ( source)
This can't be explained by the 4710hq higher frequency (+100mhz), because I get the same results when I downclock it...

Oh man you are right :( I cant find the versions with the larger battery anywhere! And the XMG C404 is way more expensive! ~1.8CAD (when converted).
I am out of luck :( Can anyone help me out on where to buy a version with larger battery, or whether i should get another laptop?

    My thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...laptop-discrete-graphics-good-batty-life.html

although I'm not getting many responses :( I don't want to spend 2k I would much rather spend around 1.5k overall.

EDIT: Sebi i really appreciate the videos you've been posting by the way!

The only thing that's really holding me back is the battery life on this thing

Hey guys. I'm pretty much sold on getting the gigabyte p34g v2. I just had two questions.

    1) I see that there is both a HDMI out and Dsub out in the spec sheet. Therefore, will it be possible to output to dual external monitors?

    2) In the following thread, whizkid11 posted some images showing issues with screen bleeding and chassis alignment. Have any of you had these problems or is it (hopefully) an isolated occurence?

To other owners: How much have you guys been able to undervolt? I am stable so far at -70mv and the temperature difference is huge... 81 under full load!!!! I'm going to see how much I can undervolt; if I can get lower than -100mv I will be amazed....

No drop in fps while gaming with under-volt, no significant battery life gained; just better temperatures and durability.

    Any reduction in fan noise?

Hey Sebi, I have a quick question. I'm buying this laptop and the only problem I see is the fan noise. If I'm just browsing or using laptop in a lecture, the fan wouldn't randomly kick up right? Especially if I undervolt? And would it be possible to show me how to undervolt? Just through the BIOS?

I can make a "how-to" video on under volting; it's super easy and actually done within the OS ;)

Fan never kicks in when on balanced mode and using Microsoft Office/interent. However, it could be different for you depending on where you are using it. In my school for example, AC is ALWAYS on and its downright cold. Due to this, fan never kicks in. In my house as well where its about 24 degrees, fan never kicks in.

    Would be great!
Here is a screenshot of the temperatures in Auto Fan Mode being silent during taking this snapshot during browsing: [IMG]
Every ten minutes the fan is kicked on, although I changed nothing, then the CPU is reaching almost 70 degree. Room temperature was about 23 degree. What could be the reason? Backgroundservices/-apps? For me as student it would be excellent to have a continious silent notebook during browsing and office.

    Edit:
Watching Youtube Video: cpu temperature is reaching about 50-54 degree

You have the XMG C404? ( I was planning on buying one but this fan thing will be a problem for my lectures...btw what battery life are you getting out of it?)

And applying the thermal compound (not sure if you already have already or not) would reduce the temperatures by 5-6 degrees, I think. Also undervolting would help with the temperatures as listed above.

Yes, after returning the P34Gv2 with the 47wh battery I bought the C404 with discount of 10% (Germany - Brasil 7:1). Compared to the P34Gv2 it feels a bit colder at the bottom side for me, also the C404 has lower CPU temps. (subjective impression). Equipped with the 840 Evo (mSata) it boots up under 8 seconds. Until now I unfortunately had no opportunity to check battery life (61wh) because of my exams the next days. I will share the result of testing the battery life after testing...

The fan noise is really more than acceptable, usually it stays off most of the time during idle/browsing/office/watching youtube videos and if it kicks on, the sound is barely noticeable, except you are sitting in a completely silent library.

50-54 seems about right for idle Temps, and my p34g v2, still with stock TIM, sits at about this temp absolutely silently while unplugged and browsing/office. Note that while unplugged the cpu is actually automatically underclocked to about 1ghz, significantly reducing excess heat.

When plugged in, at idle/browsing/office mine sits at about 52-57.... fans will come on for 5-10 seconds every 20 minutes or so. Coming from a Sony vaio whose fans NEVER turned off, this is an absolute dream. I do however plan to put new thermal paste on cpu/gpu, which will hopefully drop the Temps by enough for complete silence at idle while plugged in too. If that doesn't work you could use the intel XTU software, and make minor changes to the core multipliers to achieve this... lots of other fun tweaks in here, ieundervoting etc.

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?keyword=""extreme+tuning+utility""

The 70 degree spike definitely seems like a background process gone wild, and I have never seen anything close to that during browsing/office/Youtube.

Another thing to make sure you do to set the maximum processor state to 99% in you power management profile, this will have almost no effect on performance, but can help keep load or short spikes temps in check.

Also make sure to update to the latest bios, I noticed it seems to have put in smaller steps to the fan ramping, so level one (usually kicking in at around 60 degrees) is now almost silent.

Updating of all gigabyte software, including the bios, can be done with one click through the smart update software. At first I thought this would be a bit gimmicky, but have been pleasantly surprised with its usefulness. It saves you searching through the manufacturer's support pages as is normally the case, and presents a clear view of the latest beta and stable drivers available, compared to the version you currenlty have installed.

    smartupdate.PNG

Admittedly it is not bug free, and quite a few updates took more than one attempt to successfully update, including the wireless, which has so far failed on every attempt. But overall it is a great idea for a piece of included software, and gives the impression that gigabyte will be continuing to support the device, and provide quality updates into the future. As you can see I have installed the latest beta's in every case, and have experienced zero issues with their performance.

I think others have reported the smart USB backup is broken, I have not tried, as the model I purchased came preinstalled with windows 7, but with a windows 8 dvd install media.

Although you should not really need to use it.... it is only designed to make installing a fresh version of windows, or restoring the initial windows install easier. It does not backup any user data, essentially just backing up the registration code and making it a little easier to perform a fresh install.

You could try to follow this guide

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...y-s-series-owners-thread-594.html#post9078469

to make your own OEM install USB.

The smart usb backup app lets you copy your recovery partition to a flash drive. So if your main hard drive fails or you want to install a better one, you will have a copy of the recovery partition. Also, if you copy the recovery partition in a USB you can erase the partition and have some extra free space on the SSD.

Yes, i have always thought recovery partitions are a waste of space. They simply allow for fresh installs without using external media.

The method i linked previously should work to provide you with this option on USB, as most oem recovery partitions are similar.

Your other option is to wait for gigabyte to fix the smart usb backup.

    Hi guys,

I couldn't find anything regarding the BIOS-updates. Do they affect the fan behaviour?
I read Sebi97's post that they should be turning on at 60, but mine seem to turn on and off quite irrationally at anything between 50 to 60. (regardless of the Gigabyte setting stealth/auto)

The only differences are in the configuration (CF = config). As far as I know, only different storage options and/or battery capacity.

Alright guys after shopping around I'm finally deciding to order this notebook. Ordering from xotic PC, am I missing any important config options?
    Here's what I've got.
    1.IC diamond repaste.
    2.Upgrade stock Msata to Samsung's EVO 250GB.

Do I need any warranties or RAM upgrade?

Sorry, as I said I have never used the smart USB tool, as I did not see it as necessary.

There are plenty of other options to achieve the same result as the tool (as all it appears to do essentially is create a bootable windows 8 install USB).

As you said you have reset everything to factory conditions, and it still does not function, which implies a bug in the software itself. If you are insistant on using this tool I can only suggest contacting gigabyte directly for support.

It is not just you, others have encountered problems since the launch of the p34g (v1). A quick search of that forum found this explanation which might be of interest, mentioning that the smart usb backup is designed only for single hdd mode operation..... have you tried running it with only 1 hdd/ssd installed?

Otherwise another workaround is discussed here

Bought this laptop a month ago, arrived about 10 days ago. Everything is solid here except that I misunderstood its battery life capacity; when I was doing my laptop shopping research, I was mainly using a review that used the laptop with the 63Wh battery while I've ordered the 42Wh. Sucks, because the 7+ hours battery life was the reason I chose this laptop. But I've already fallen in love with this laptop, so I'm very much on the fence about returning the laptop. Struggle is real. :/

Can someone keep me updated on the other battery options? I'm thinking I'll just keep this laptop (my heart hurts either way, really), but I certainly would love a longer battery life than ~4 hours in power saver mode. I'm going into my first year of college and I don't really know how my college does in its supply of accessible wall sockets.

I did find GNC-C30 (the name of the 42Wh battery pack) in alibaba, but couldn't find its 63Wh counterpart. Search engines don't work well with three-letter words.

The 4+ hour battery life is adequate for a day of use. I've used my good ol' Asus UX32VD for the last two years at the university, and that laptop has roughly the same battery life. Just turn your screen off when not typing/making notes, and you'll be just fine. Battery bar shows that when idling this laptop draws only ~6500mW of power, prolly less with the screen off.

I'm thinking on ordering the larger battery later on, too.

I never got under -70 or -75mV or so. Occasionally I still got some freezes, especially when I disconnected an external HDMI monitor. I ended up returning mine due to a change in financial situation, though.

I fixed the issue. Don't rename your (Windows C: ) drive, otherwise smart backup won't work.
