Bought this $4000 laptop 4 months ago. I always have my laptop plugged in. But whenever I unplug it, it turns OFF and won't turn back on unless I plug it back in. When it turns on, I see this battery icon with an X on it. When I hover the mouse, it says "100% charged and working".

Is my battery dead? Should I have not kept it plugged in all day?

It is possible that your battery is dead, but not from it being plugged in all day. You can try uninstalling in the device manager, microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery, then restart and windows will install it again. If that doesn't work, open the laptop, remove the battery connector from the board, then plug it back in.

If unplugging the battery ribbon and plugging it back doesn't work, you should try contacting support for warranty, which is usually one year.
