Anyone able to tell me which M.2 are the PCIe x4 slots?
Thanks. -
I don't have one to verify, but I did post this a couple months back:
"Another good review (google translate is your friend, unless you speak chinese):
https://m.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=238&t=4950362
This one includes a look under the heatpipes for those planning on re-pasting. Another interesting thing that came out from the review is that I had thought that the two side-by-side m.2 slots were the two pci-e gen 3 x 4, and the one of to the side next to the wifi card was the gen 3 x 2, but apparently that's not the case (so, if you're doing raid, it's the top slot and the slot of to the side; bottom slot must then be the gen 3 x 2). Also, the reviewer's nvme ssd's controller would thermal throttle until he connected (using pads) the controller to the case to help it dissipate the heat using the case. I wonder if that will be necessary with the Samsung 960s, or if they run cooler than the Toshiba xg3 used in the review." -
Superb. Thank you for the answer.
I am installing 2 x 1TB 960 EVO's. One tomorrow and another in a couple of weeks. Will update with thermals. -
Once i get my X7, a repaste with liquid metal is definitely in order. Probably the thermal pads as well. Thanks for the link. Couldn't find any other site showing the underside of the heatsinks

@MiSJAH what Torx screw size are the screws holding down the back panel?? My current screwdriver kit only has 3 bits, a T2, T3 and T4 so if i want to take one apart i may have to go out and get a new torx bit set from the local hardware shop

woah, really?

If the post from notebookcheck holds true then yes, FHD screens have been phased out from the Aorus line up from the Kaby Lake refresh onwards but it still remains to be seen. I for one am no that happy with that decision. I had already planned to get an X7V6 FHD version quite a while ago due to the issues that the AUO QHD 120hz display had and also because i have a QHD 144hz IPS monitor which is my primary screen most of the time aside from when i am out for classes. When the refresh was announced i though "hey, there's TB3 and a nice DAC for my headphones, i think i'll wait for that". But when notebookcheck covered it, i was kinda sad when it showed that the X7 refresh would either have the QHD 120hz screen or a 4k option. I don't really need 4K as i am still very comfortable gaming at 1080p which is my primary resolution most of the time. 120hz is just an added luxury to me so its not that necessary either.

I agree, give me good (IPS or a good TN with high refresh rates) FULLHD screen with gsync and I'll be happy. I see no point in going to a higher resolution screen on a 15in laptop. I have a 15in IPS MSI gs60, and a 15in (2560x1600) 2016 macbook pro and I can't see any difference when it comes to crispness (and I'm 20:20 post lasik)Jared_T likes this.

Maybe just maybe, if the refresh really doesnt have the FHD screen anymore, we could somehow ghetto mod it. Idk just a wild thought

Shame that Aorus didnt use the Chi-Mei panel found on the GS73. Excellent TN panel with its 120hz refres rate. And no issues with it ala striping. Give it a calibration and its off to the races. Hell even i would count my current P150SMA's AUO TN panel as good

to OP and everyone on this thread, I have ordered this model from newegg. I wish I could have got the same model from a reseller to support the boutique gaming laptop resellers as I think they do a great job, but they don't offer this screen, and while it might have been possible to get a reseller to swap out the screen it also is likely that would not have been something they would have wanted to do, or would have cost too much for my liking. I like newegg because of their patent troll fight so I'm happy to give them money. I hope I'm happy with the screen and keyboard. I guess at the end of the day, there will always be a better option to everything in life and you can't wait forever or dwell on it. For me, I've been researching since pascal first came to laptops in october last year. I originally was going to get the 502vs but the pointless g-sync with 60hz turned me off. Then I was going to get alienware because the 120hz on the 17 looked amazing, I saw it in person, best screen I've ever seen in person, but then the 3 screw problem came up and even though a tech could come out and potentially fix it that just turned me off. Alienware turned me off even more now based on their offerings of the 17 on their website today they offer 1050ti, two 1060 models, and only one 1070 model, and the 1080 model only to be found in refurbished. I think a 1050ti on the 17 is a joke and to me speaks volumes about the wrong direction alienware is going but that's another topic. Finally, the new 702vs looked like the winner, it had everything I wanted, except for a good keyboard. But one bad review in the nbr asus forum yesterday confirmed my worst fears: it's horribly overpriced and the body is still el cheapo 99 cent plastic same as on 702vm but just painted silver now. My other option I considered for a while as an aero 14 plus a nice 24 inch g-sync monitor, but eventually I realized that based on I'd like to keep the laptop going for at least three years, a 1060 is not going to be enough considering I plan on tripling my gaming time this year and going forward. But also back to the 702vs, I think ultimately a 17 incher is too big. Which is also why I decided against the x7 v6. Not too big for my desk at home, but too big for a table at a coffee shop where at 14 inch barely fits comfortable, depending, but on average. So anyway, thanks again to everone on all forums on nbr that helped me, and I will be posting my thoughts on details of screen and keyboard, and anything else I find noteworthy on the 120hz newegg x5 v6 model as quickly as I can after I get it.
edit: I forgot to mention how many dozens of hours I spent studying the sager 8157. the sager guys are awesome, and so is the 8157. I think the 8157 may have a better keyboard but we will see. 8157 has the same screen as this particular newegg aorus see notebookcheck shenker review of the p651 for screen details. The edge went to the aorus because of the two year warranty, the full aluminum body, the 2+ pcie m.2 slots. If the sager had more than one pcie m2 slot I would have bought the sager. My use case is gaming + work for this machine. My work requires many virtual machines in esxi that will be copied around, snapshotted, and spun up and spun down multiple times a day. As I sit here writing this I am so, so, so glad I did not get the gl702vs.... I guess it is confusing that a big name company like asus will produce something that costs the same as a used honda civic, and they can't put an alumnium case on it. If you think how much it costs to bring that machine to market, so many r&d dollars, and their abiltiy to source aluminum cases for their higher end models, it seems like it wouldn't have broken their bank to have gone with an alumnium case. my 2c and spelling errors. Edit again: I also needed something that will fit under the seat in front of my in economy class on flight, and maybe be able to open and use awkwardly on the seat tray table. I fly enough to need that, but I don't fly enough to get free business class upgrades, so an asus 752 class would be too big.Last edited: Feb 24, 2017 -
Good for you! Kinda sad that most boutique resellers in the EU and US do not carry the 120hz model. It would be a good alternative to the WQHD screen of the skew that they carry now. I'm happy that mine in SEA has that FHD screen to bring in. But i'll be going for the X7 V6 with the FHD 75hz screen. I dont want to deal with the striping issues of the AUO panel on the 1440p panel and i've been spoilt by the goodness of a large IPS screen thanks to my monitor. I will miss the quad drive capability of my current P150SM-A (2x mSATA and 2 2.5in HDD) though
-
I'm enjoying the quad drive setup on my X5, 2 x PCIe (x4), 1 x PCIe (x2) and the HDD. (Looking to swap out the HDD for a 4TB SSD and add 2 x 1TB EVO 960 to the x4 slots for RAID0 performance and will put the original PCIe SSD in the x2 slot).
-
I would love to be able to do that hahahah though its gonna cost me basically my entire college fund to get all that SSD goodness. When my X7 arrives, i plan to swap out the HDD for a Seagate 2TB Firecudda SSHD) Also, any advice on keeping battery wear to a minimum? I'm very used to taking out my battery on my current Clevo when i am plugged in to AC power since it is user removable from the outside)
-
while waiting for my laptop to arrive I thought I would download some manuals. the aorus support website has a totally useless manual ( well, not useless: it shows you how to plug in the power supply
)
but I am looking for manual on how to properly get to the bottom RAM slots under the main board, does anyone know if there is a proper aorus manual around? if not I will just email/call aorus. if they advertise the laptop as supporting 64G, they should provide a manual on how to upgrade that
-
thanks misjah for this I read the post and (a) I guess this is a pretty bad design (nobody is perfect) and (b) there still must be a manual somewhere, I will ask aorus support when my laptop arrives.MiSJAH likes this.

Are you talking about an online reseller in SEA? I'm in SEA but can't find anywhere to get an X5 with the FHD 120hz screen.
-
Yep. For my country, Malaysia, Tech Armory brings in the X5 with the 120hz screen
Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalk -
Thanks. Unfortunately they do not seem to ship outside of MY.
-
You can also try Illegear. They are also an authorized reseller for Aorus but i am not too sure about the skews that they carry. I'm getting my X7 from them

I'm trying to source this in SEA as well. Tech Armory has the FHD variant (NE3D) alright. But sadly thet don't offer international shipping.
-
You should try Illegear. They're helping me bring in the FHD skew of the X7 V6 and they also offer international shipping
-
Contacted them as well. Still no replies. The prices are higher Tech Armory and the price from Illegear might be the same so I'm thinking of opting for getting it from the US instead it that is the case.
-
@Jared_T hey, mate. Could you verify if you purchased the said fhd variant from illegear? Thanks!

Yep X7-V6PC3D

Ah. So they don't have the 120hz FHD versions anymore. Thanks!
-
They should be able to bring in for you. They originally did not bring in the X7 FHD but they helped me bring it in so they should be able to get yours for you. Shoot them an email pr FB message

Isn't the X7 V6 PC3D the QHD variant?
Oh thanks! I wasn't able to ask them that. How much in USD did you pay for yours? -
Nope mine is the FHD IPS not the QHD 120hz. Not too sure how much is it in USD. Im paying in MYR

Hey guys. I have an Aorus X7v6 incoming in a couple of weeks. I justed wanted to ask about warranty. Will it be void if i perfrom end user upgrades? I plan to replace the HGST drive with a Seagate Firecudda and also repaste with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
-
Did anyone ever test the battery life on the 120 hz model? I'm pretty curious how long it would last with undervolting. Could it be possible to set up a battery saving profile where the GPU is also undervolted/underclocked to extend the battery?
-
If it helps i have the FHD X7v6 so its basically the same as the X5 except bigger in overall dimensions. Same battery, same components. I can squeeze roughly 4 to 4 and a half hours of battery life on power saver, screen brightness at minimum while browsing and youtubing on Opera. I have an undervolt of - 160mv stable on the CPU. Cant play with GPU voltages though
Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalkia_ likes this. -
That's pretty good battery life. I know these 1070's like to sip about 30 watts idle lol. If only we had a Optimus switch!
With a undervolt, Power saver, lowest brightness, I can get 3 hours and 30 minutes before it shuts off.
Anyways, good review Misjah. You guys upgrading when next GEN GPU's come out? I guess the V9'sMiSJAH likes this.
