Is the display 'stripping issue' that bad on the new 120hz 3K panels?

I'm reading horrifying testimonials on Aorus forums about the stripping issue from people who started receiving their X7 DT laptops this month.

Aorus just refunded me $3500 because of a PayPal malfunction, and are asking me to pay them again. Reading about the issue, I'm having second thoughts. The Razer Pro benchmarks were disappointingly in 1070 territory, and the Alienware is too big and heavy. There really are no other options here. Thinking of holding out a few months till the issue is solved. I already have a 1080 GTX system with a 6820hk (15r2+Amplifier) so Im not exactly in a hurry.

I had an AW 17 for about 10 minutes before returning it due to non-screen issues, and while the 1440p 120hz screen had the lines, I had to look hard--two inches away from the screen--to truly notice them. It didn't bother me, but your mileage may very. I absolutely understand not wanting a weird screen. :) Additionally, AUO is the only manufacturer of this screen right now (used in Aorus, Alienware, and Clevo laptops), and I don't know when another screen manufacturer would be in place to produce these. As far as I know, the striped lines are a watermark of the manufacturing process. If you're not in a hurry, waiting can be good--especially with Kaby Lake proc's coming out.

That wouldn't bother me either then. But the reports I read painted a much worse picture.

Honestly, the projected performance boost with Kaby Lake is 5-15%. With the 6820hk replacement, I'm expecting the boost to be at the lower end of this range i.e. not worth waiting 5-6 months.

I definitely agree on the Kaby Lake chip.

Here's a video of the striping on the x7 v6 model:

Not sure if it's the video, but when he gets real close up his screen's stripes were more noticeable than mine.

I agree not worth waiting 5-6 months, but Kaby Lake (7820HK) should be out in a matter of days/weeks since the formal announcement is going to be at CES in 2 weeks, and there's already retailers popping up with 7820HK in laptops (and performance benchmarks had leaked for it way back in October). Now, it is unknown how long it's going to take Aorus to update their laptops, but given that Skylake to Kaby Lake is just a part swap (same socket and TDP), it should be trivial as long as they can get their hands on the CPU (aka, Intel's production can keep up.... though I doubt that will be an issue with a January release).
I'll also note that there won't be anything new for over a year, since Coffee Lake has a Q2 2018 release date (though 6 cores will be fun).

Yeah I saw that video last month and it looks shockingly bad to me... What concerned me is that people on Aorus forums are saying it makes the screen look blurry and less sharp that their other laptop 1080p panels, which is what I'm concerned about the most. Honestly, I'm considering keeping my refunded money and just waiting for a better screen. Was never in a hurry to get the laptop.

You know, on the AW I did have the slightly off feeling that things were blurrier for no reason. I attributed that to Windows scaling however.

    Fwiw

I had the screen Also in a Aw17 r4 personally it bothered me enough to send it back, I did a side by to a IPS 1080p screen and preferred the hd to me anyways it looked sharper and much less washed out.

It probably is Windows scaling only. My current AW 15r2 lappie also has blurry everything thanks to the horrid 4K screen I'm never getting again on a laptop. This is mainly why I went for Aorus instead of the Razer Pro.

****. That settles it then. I am supposed to keep that laptop for at least 2 years... Looks like I might have to wait till the stripping issue is fixed.
