I'm fairly surprised there hasn't been a thread dedicated to this system yet. Its US release seems to be imminent. Anyway, I wanted to start a thread to talk about it, and get people's opinions.

Looks like there are two versions being sold initially, the Gigabyte U24F-CF1 ( $1299 @ Amazon), and Gigabyte U24T-CF1 ( $1399 @ Amazon). Looks like the prime difference is that the U24T has a lower-res touch-screen, bigger hard-drive, and is a bit heavier. The chassis looks very similar to its predecessor, the U2442, as well as the P34G. I imagine its likely identical to the P34G on the inside, and shares many of its construction components, as they're nearly identitcal in weight, thickness/depth/width, and fan placement.

Personally, I'm mostly interested in it over the higher-performance P34G because it has a 15w proc and a 750m, which should equate to much better battery life than the P34G, the thing that seems to be its Achilles-heal. Downside is the screen is a lower res TN(?) panel. I'm really on the fence between these two systems, and it all comes down to portability. I'd like to be able to game, but this won't be my primary gaming device (have a desktop for that), just something to play MMOs on the couch while the girlfriend watches TV. What are your thoughts?

750M would game well on a 768p panel

I'm also suprised there is no dedicated thread.. I had a u2442 until it was stolen in Italy this year. If you need a gaming machine AND travel this is the way to go. RyanAir in Europe (the super cheap flights) is very picky about the 10kg weight limit and may randomly weight your carry-on (no way I am checking in expensive electronics). .

My big question is battery life. I thought the u2442 sucked juice too fast while just trying to surf the web. Not a big deal in the US but in Europe, it's not so easy to find power outlets while stopping for a meal.

I was watching for this one but if you take a look at the spec. You get a lot more on a P34G for the extra $100. A 1920x1080 (although some may argue that a 1600x900 screen is more suitable for a 14"). But you also get the GTX-760M and another 500GB of HDD storage. The one thing you might get is a slightly more time on battery but there's no info on how much. I eventually just settled for the P34G as battery time is not that important for me.

Yea the P34G has performance in spades compared to this, but a sub-4-hour battery life is unacceptable for anyone wanting to use it on the go without immediate access to AC.

I don't think anyone should be considering this machine at 1299. The p34G just offers much more at 100$ extra. It would be more of a reasonable machine at 1199.

While true, it does have considerably more performance for a relatively small increase of price, it also uses considerably more energy doing so, and as such, has short battery life. The U24F on paper would allow someone to have decent performance and battery life. It's the same battery size as the P34G (50Whr), but the processor is 15W instead of 47w and the GPU also uses less energy as it has half the number of cores. As this is a laptop, portability should definitely be a consideration for most people, otherwise why not just get a desktop?

Wow, what a laptop, I like the combination of i7 ultra low voltage processor and mid range discrete GPU! I will definitely interested to get one, when the refresh brings the new Maxwell 850M GPU. Any info if HDD is 9mm or 7mm?

Ok guys, it is still uncertain if this model will receive Maxwell graphics update as the P34 V2 did, but here is a review what we can expect from a 850M 2GB DDR3 with Dual-Core Intel CPU. I think the 4270 3DMark 11 points and gaming performance are very impressive, especially this Gigabyte with i7 ULV CPU will run cool and quiet:thumbsup:.

I think the 850M has no Kepler version, they are all Maxwell. The 860M is the only one proven to exist on both architectures.

That is for sure, but this laptop is still with 750M. Will it receive the 850M or they discontinuing this model?

Yeah it looks like the p34g is replacing it..

There's a larger p15f with an 850M but that seems not to be thin and light but instead value minded..

According to notebookxheck the 860 and the 850 are the same card but the 850 is using the 20 nm chips.
This means it should use even less power and produce less heat. It may even overclock higher. It might be better
When we see it hands on its possible everyone buying at this time will want one.

I hope not, just probably have to wait longer for this refresh, since the 750M version also quite new.

There is no 20nm yet.. They are all still 28nm.. You might want to go re-read that notebookcheck page.

So are there any news of an update for this model? Hopefully with a lower price tag... Or is it confirmed that it'll be completely replaced by the P34Gv2?
