^Ah thanks for those photos!![]()
So how do you find the colours so far - above average/good enough?
-
Congratulations! Looks like PCHome is out of the U2442N with the 128GB MSata SSD only. Is the palm rest metal or plastic? And is the bezel plastic? Looks nice. Glad you like the display. If you look at the other thread, the cooling system on this unit looks to be very effective.
-
Hi, seems it's available now. -
Awesome, thanks! Looking forward to hearing what your impressions are. Get ready to answer lots of questions! LOL
-Matt -
In the Philippines, a different version of the U2442N has been released, with 660M graphics (and GDDR5), 2x eSATA/USB2 combo and 1TB HDD: Gigabyte P2542G gaming & U2442N ultrabook launched | YugaTech | Philippines, Tech News & Reviews
-
That's interesting. Seems they got the pictures the wrong way round in that article, but still both seem to have the 660m!
I wonder how many weeks before we might see something like that in more countries. -
Wow, that would be awesome if they put a GTX660M.
I want that!
But, looking at the VBIOS from the BIOS, I only found 2, which my guess is 1 for GT640M and another 1 for GT650M by looking at the clock.
Unless they release a new BIOS later with the GTX660M. -
I'll bet $10 (to no one in particular) that that's a spec error on the U2442N. And it wouldn't surprise me if the gamer didn't have a 660m either, but that could go either way. U2442N?...I'll believe it when I see it.
-Matt -
Yep,
I mailed gigabyte and they told me the warranty should be kept to 2 years.
Well i can't find any registration page on pchome.
I think i'll first sell this one to buy another. -
I think you may be right, I can't quite imagine a 660m in a chassis this thin, surely the cooling system would struggle.
650m maybe, but yeah we'll have to wait and see. -
Thanks for the Photos. The screen looks acceptable.
-
I found them good enough, I always up the saturation on my displays to make things look nicer & pop out more.
Yeah the insides are plastic. I really like how big the palm rest is. -
OK, my first question: how would you rate the temperature of the palmrest during normal use? Cooler than room temperature, about room temperature, about body temperature, or warmer than body temp? Is it comparable on either side of the trackpad, or is one side warmer than the other?
Since it's plastic I guess my "ideal" isn't likely, which is what it feels like to hold a piece of smooth, heavy metal...that cool feeling in your hand. And hey, why does inert metal have that property?
-Matt -
I'm kinda nervous about ordering from PCHomeUS, how do you handle returns? I was gonna go through ExcaliburPC but I'd rather cancel and not wait a month if these guys are really reputable.
-
Should I get the I7 or I5? Can you overclock the I7? My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron Q15R (Sandybridge). It gets too hot to sit on your lap, hence why I'm leaning towards the I7 17W
But then again I'm not sure about spending the extra £100!
Is the I7 more powerful despite the lower clock?
PassMark Intel vs AMD CPU Benchmarks - High End -
No. Generally, ULV CPUs (the i7 in this case) are inferior performers to standard low-voltage CPUs due to the sacrifices that have to be made to reach such a low power envelope. However, from what I can tell, the ULV i7 in question is roughly equal to the standard LV i5 at equal clocks. There's only about a 300MHz difference in clocks, which won't make a noticable difference in most tasks. So, it really comes down to if you want to spend the extra 100 quid or not.
I wouldn't expect the ULV i7 to overclock very well without raising the voltage, which would start to negate the whole point (power/thermal savings). On the other hand, I believe the ULV CPUs are highly binned parts, so... -
Seems a part of the heat emission holes are covered by the screen when using the laptop, so the bottom of the screen could be very hot after a while? Or would it cause screen issues after using the laptop for a few months? I'm a bit worried.
-
Is there likely to be heat and thus noise difference between the i7 and i5? Want something I can leave turned on while I sleep.
-
Any word of these being available in Canada?
-
has anyone who ordered through Amazon UK had their order shipped yet? they are meant to go today but mine is still not sent
-
I've ordered through Amazon UK and my order hasn't been dispatched yet either. The most interesting thing is that the website states: "Temporarily out of stock". My estimated delivery time however is still August 21st - August 22nd.
-
yeah my expected delivery date is still the same - I saw the out of stock msg too - hoping that just means the ones that they were getting in have all been presold
-
Hoping this doesn't mean that some of those who pre-ordered it aren't gonna get it now...
-
from Amazon:
We regret to inform you that your order will take longer to fulfill than originally estimated. Our supplier has notified us that there is a delay obtaining stock for the following items you ordered on August 09 2012. -
The same here. Seems like Amazon hasn't received their order either. I wonder how long it's gonna take, I need a new laptop ASAP
-
I saw on a German website they were expecting stock on the 28/8 so hopefully Gigabyte will have got their together by then. Im guessing Amazon arent too happy with their supplier either
-
I hope this delay is because Gigabyte is adding a 650M, Thunderbolt, and a better screen display.
-
I think you need to rub your magical lamp a little harder -- Gigabyte can't hear you! But hey, I'm all for delay+upgraded hardware. I only wish there were some rumint to back up the theory.
-Matt -
Zero chance of that, sadly. Although, while we're at it, I'll beg for a quad core CPU, too.
Kinda wish I'd never read about this laptop, I'd have already bought the Asus or the Sony and would probably be reasonably happy. Of course, now, that's impossible. -
Wow, maybe it's time for a support group. The "Waiting-For-The-U24442-Is-Killing-Me" group. First meeting is at my place!
-Matt -
In Germany it seems immediately available now, e.g. Conrad - Ihr Online Shop für Elektronik, Computer, Multimedia, Modellbau & Technik
Gigabyte Ultrabook U2442N 35,65 cm (14") mit 1600 x 900dpi in edlem Silber/Gold Intel® Core
The pictures show the thunderbolt interface open! (but I suspect it is a mistake)
I have ordered one, but not at Conrad but at its supplier. -
I think this forum is it!
@mr_bean too bad they dont have the U2442V - thats the one im waiting for - doesnt seem to have been released in Germany though. -
According to Gigabyte's distributor, German people want potent CPUs and therefore the V-version will not have a German release.
-
I would have preferred the v version as well, don't see a lot of sense in the n version. But I need a new machine now (actually 2 months ago...). I will get it tomorrow.
-
Has anyone in the US purchased anything from CompSource? Never heard of them. Prices are the lowest though, but of course not in stock.
CompSource.com : Search Results for u2442 -
I haven't heard of them, but very respectable scores on CompSource / c-source.com / csource.com Reviews - compsource.com Ratings at ResellerRatings. Seems pretty truthy at first glance but...some of the reviews are a bit short and shallow. At least there are good responses to the low-score reviews.
-Matt -
Anyone in Europe knows a reseller that accept Paypal or bank transfer?
Wanted to purchase from pchome or usa but customs charges "are too damn high!". -
Now I hold it in my hands! So it is real (and not a phantom ;-)).
It feels much better than I thought. You realize that it is plastic, but it feels good!
Thunderbolt is not there (not like the pictures on the Conrad Webpage ;-(()
I have installed some programs (not many), and only 60GBs are left. The capacity of the SSD only shows up with ~100GB, not 128GB. But you can outsource all uncritical data to the HDD. -
Video review
-
Which SSD is installed? How would you rate the display? What keyboard layout did you get delivered?
Certainly interested in a (short) review! -
I'd be willing to bet 10 dollars or krona or galleons or whatever that virtual memory (RAM cache) and hibernation are on by default, which will return 10-15GBs back to you when you switch them off. At least the SSD "bible" says something like "Thou shall not use virtual memory, nor shall thee seek comfort in hibernation."
-Matt -
Honestly, Display and Keyboard (German Layout) are pretty much a matter of taste. Keyboard has very short ways, it feels nice for me. Display also looks good, but I don't have a lot of comparison. I bought my last one 4.5 years ago, and there is a difference ;-))
I am still skeptical because of the cheap price. So far I couldn't find the reason why it is so cheap. My only concern is that it will degrade over time...
The screen has a bold frame. Looks like it could have easily been a 15 inch display in the same housing...
From Standby it takes almost 10sec, still a good time.
Battery... I was watching ~45min videos (full HD, MTS format), and then battery has shown 2 hours (75%). Disappointing. But now, 10min later, it shows 3.5 hours 72%. Better ;-)) -
Hibernation and System Restore should definitely be turned off, as that will return a lot of space back to you. Virtual memory (a.k.a. the page file), however, should be kept on at a minimum level -- I keep my page file at 1GB. From my understanding, Windows isn't really designed to operate sans a page file, and SSDs actually make a great medium for the page file due to their very good random access performance.
If you want more information on virtual memory/the page file, and don't mind a kind of technical read, read this excellent article on the subject. He also has a good way for you to figure out exactly how large a page file you really need, but with 8GB of physical RAM, most people will probably be fine with a 1GB page file. Do NOT follow the 1.5x your physical RAM or other silly formulas. -

So, maybe another week or two for us in North America. What I want to know is if the GT650 that they are working on for later in the year is DDR3 or DDR5... the GT650 DDR3 is really no different from a hardware perspective than a GT640, correct? -
How funny -- I've been guessing that early September is when we'd see it at Amazon. My prediction was basically:
- Gigabyte lists Amazon as one of their retailers: GIGABYTE - Where to Buy - Notebook & Netbook
- Amazon has some older Gigabyte models in their inventory
- Dynamism estimates a late-September availability
and
- Retailers often post pessimistic availability dates (right?)
So I put it all together and got "it's coming to Amazon in early September!"
Hope I'm right.
-Matt -
The price has gone down on amazon for the N version and it hasn't even been in stock yet

Seems that it's available here -
This site here says the U2442 will be available September 10.
Gigabyte U2442 Ultrabook pictures and hands-on - Pocket-lint
Could just be for the UK since he mentions the price with a pound sign. The site also mentions that is has a quad-core i7, but I'm sure that's a mistake. -
BTW, somebody was asking which SSD I have in my u2442n. Device Manager says:
LITEONIT LMT-128M3M
Somehow I have the impression, that this is not a very powerful model. How good is it compared with others?
As for the HDD, it says WDC WD7500BPVT-22HXZT3. -
Thanks for posting the SSD model.
Actually, the LiteON is a top-class SSD. It has a really good Marvell SSD controller. The Acer TimelineU M3 features the same SSD and was tested by the Dutch publication Hardware.Info ( Acer Aspire TimelineU M3: a large Ultrabook - Performance: PCMark 7 | Hardware.Info United Kingdom), scoring more than 5000 points in the System Storage benchmark.
