I believe that ASI is a distributor. I think that they will distribute the laptop to places like Fry's, Amazon, etc. where it will actually be sold. At least that's what it looks like ASI's website suggests.

well, I played it all weekend. According to my friends BWE3 was the most optimized of all of the betas thus far, however you should still expect the final release to be less cpu-dependant.

I had FXAA, high shaders, high textures, enhanced character textures, low shadows, med terrain, all reflections, high animations, all post processing because that is what I felt looked the best with best performance. In WvW and asura lands performance sometimes took a hit so I had to drop either FXAA, animations, or shaders (1 of those is enough usually).

Aah, thanks. Hopefully they'll distribute it to a local retail store.

How does the gigabyte u2442n or v compare to the sony s series 13.3". I've been looking at both a lot recently and while I know that the gigabyte is cheaper, I also am more confident with the sony in its build quality and there is already a good community on here for overclocking and the like. What do you guys think?

    *nod* Fair enough.

Honestly, after doing a crap-ton of research on the u2442 and similar machines, I'm leaning towards just getting a new Macbook Pro 15" with the GeForce 650M (better than the 640 in the u2442) and installing Windows on it.

The screen is nicer, the gfx card is better, it's an all around sexier machine, AND I can order it right now rather than having to wait until August or much later. The only downside is the cost.

true, but doesn't battery life kind of suck when running bootcamp? good battery life is a big draw for me, so I can't really sacrifice that.

How does this stack up against the asus g55; you can get those for maybe 100 dollars more and they have a better screen, better card, soon to have thunderbolt and I believe a better CPU too. Even the battery life of 3-3.5 hrs seems comparable, even though no one called the g55 an ultrabook.

Well, no one would ever call G55 an ultrabook.

In fact, the u2442 that sits just between 13 - 14" is rather thick compared to an average ultrabook.

If Asus made an ROG series ultrabook that'd be really interesting though.

is it really that different? I see it for $1100US which is €900 so add on taxes and it would be pretty close. Maybe in Asia its a little cheaper?

    1) Bootcamping Windows on a Mac is not the same as running Windows on a PC.

    2) Given the almost-certainly vastly-superior cooling of the U2442N as compared to the Macbook, you'll have to worry about noisy fans and throttling less on the U2442N. Plus, you'll likely be able to overclock the GPU to 650M levels or better. Although I'll concede the Macbook does at least have GDDR5.

    3) Yeah, if you're willing to spend practically double the money, some things damn well should be better.

This is absolutely the best Ultrabook ever! I am so excited to get this. I emailed Gigabyte about it's availability for the USA and they said it'll be released to their distributor ASI Partners (based out of California)

Personally I think you are better off buying a MacAir 13 inch for MAC OSX functionality and portability AND a Gigabyte U2442N for an excellent all rounder that you would use every day.

The 13" Air is a beautiful machine and showcases the best of the MAC OS X operating system and Apple build quality, portability, battery life etc etc but that's all I would use it for. A way to keep on top of MAC OS X changes and so forth and to keep my hand in with it so I'm better able to support the Macs I support.

I have a beast gaming laptop (below) but I'll be getting a Gigabyte U2442N cause it hits all my sweet spots and I bet I'll end up using the U2442N more ultimately.

I also looked on Gigabyte's website. It is available at the link below at ExcaliberPC as well (sadly both are in CA with me, so I get to pay $100 more in taxes)

    "u2442" | EXcaliberPC.com

    1) Does anyone know an exact date of availability though? Does your post mean that it will be available August 6th at ASI?

    2) Which model are you guys getting? I think the u2442v with i7-3517U processor will be better for me. It should use less battery life than the i5m when I'm not gaming right?

You have a chance to make a huge splash with this notebook. Take a lesson from Acer and don't ignore the US market!

I'd love to see someone compare the performance and battery life between the N and V model. If there's only going to be a few percent increase in performance for the N model, but a pretty big difference in battery life for the V model, I'd go for the V model.

No worries. ASI is a national distributer with distribution centers all around the country. There is a warehouse less than an hour from my house. :D I expect that we will see these in most major outlets like Frys, J&R, New Egg, Tiger and Amazon eventually. There are two retailers already accepting preorders and the first units are expected to ship by August 15th. I think we'll see the units distributed more widely after that.

Gigabyte knows that it has a winner here. It has been trying to design a breakthrough device for years and Gigabyte won't squander this opportunity. Hopefully, they can keep up with demand. The only competition I see for the U2442 series is the Sony S13P. The U2442N has a full-powered GT640M GPU, a 2 year international warranty and better cooling and the Sony has better battery life and is probably better built. It will be interesting to see if wider distribution creates pressure to discount the prices a bit.

Hopefully, there are no fatal flaws and QA/QC is not ignored by the builders.

I haven't seen any mention of Thunderbolt on the current retailers' websites, and the pictures I've seen don't show a Mini DP/TB port. Was it dropped from the production version? :(

Intel has delayed native thunderbolt support because it failed certification. Current models do not have Thunderbolt. As soon as Intel certifies the support, I would guess we'll see Thunderolt in most notebooks.

So the 750 GB HDD is optional in both the N and V models? I can't imagine NOT getting the extra storage.

If someone didn't get the 750 GB HDD, I wonder what that space is used for?

I'd actually go for the model sans the HDD. First, I doubt I'll need more than the 128GB SSD, and without the HDD it weighs less, battery life should improve slightly, and there won't be any noise/heat from the HDD. Even if I do need more space, I'd rather buy my own HDD and put it in, since I'm sure they're going to charge more for the upgrade than the actual cost of an HDD. Plus I'd be able to get a better performing one (such as a Momentus XT). Or even just buy another SSD (you can get good 128GB SSDs for only around $100 nowadays).
The HDD bay is simply empty, presumably.

Ah, I see. I thought that the notebook chassis might be different dependent on whether someone opts for the HDD or not.

Definitely the upgrade option would be much more expensive than buying one on your own.

So I finally opened this laptop.
I was a victim to a rattly fan, so I had to lubricate the GPU-side fan. Also a new fan is on its way from gigabyte. I have to say, this laptop frustrated me with how much trouble it was to open. (Obviously they discourage you from opening it, but psh)

but since there are no other guides on this and I scratched the bottom of my laptop, I figured I may as well be the scapegoat...

You'll need a NARROW SET OF TWEEZERS (or some masterful work with a toothpick)

1.Remove the screws around the perimeter, AND the ram panel screw (extra long screw extending through the motherboard)

2.After removing all the screws on the bottom around the perimeter, there are 8 more "hidden screws" covered by REALLY STICKY RUBBER THINGS. (henceforth, "plugs").
These are very hard to remove without completely jacking up the plug itself and the panel around it, and I recommend using a pair of very sharp tweezers to wiggle the plug up and out CAREFULLY. These plugs make the laptop an absolute B1TCH to open!! After tampering with the adhesive, these plugs will be somewhat easier to remove a second time, or you can just leave them out.
Also note that these hidden screws unlock the keyboard panel so you can simply pry it off from the top. The bottom of the keyboard panel is not interesting, mostly metal from what I peeked at. Maybe the CMOS battery is accessible from there...

3.Simply lift off the back panel to reveal: both fans, battery, harddrive, mSata/SSD, wifi card/antennas, many shiny capacitors. (I have the combo so I won't know if HDDless version has HDD ports... I don't see why they'd bother to gimp the device though, unless they pull a dell / sony / ....)

And also, judging by the pic you provided plus this one: [IMG]
... it looks like there's a panel on the bottom that provides access to the RAM slots without having to deconstruct the chassis. I wonder why they did that but don't provide a way to access the HDD...

Been following this thread for a while and seen others talk about the Sony S15. Well I found this deal and think I'm going for it. What do you think?

The out the door price is $1200 plus tax (ouch), with a free ps3 and sheet battery. Then I found a rebate from Sony for a visa cash card for $150. It says you need to be a student (I am) but theres no for them to check since you dont have to use a .edu email.

    So I'm thinking $1250 - $200 (sell ps3 160gb) - 150 (visa rebate) = $900 with max specs (I'll buy a better ssd later).

I'm thinking I could overclock the 640m Le a bit for better performance.

The links are below and info.

    Any opinions???

but if it works for you, and you don't care about seeing any red colors, then go for it :)

The only downside could be the intel i7, since its an undervolt processor. (4000 points on cpubenchmark).

But only if you are considering to do some serious and intense work on this notebook, otherwise the i7's fine.

Hi guys. I'm trying my best to make heads or tails of this notebook and this company. Gigabyte is pretty much unheard of to the layman (myself) as far as notebook companies go, but I suppose that was the same for Asus at one point. The ultrabook they're offering has what I call the trinity of what I'm looking for (full ssd, discrete gpu, high resolution), and to top it all off it's being offered at a price that is borderline unbelievable to me. I haven't found any other notebook that offers these three together at a reasonable price; they either have the good resolution and gpu, but then they have a hdd ssd hybrid. Or they have a good gpu and ssd but the resolution is only 1366x768. Or... well you get what I mean.

Does anyone know if this company is trustworthy, if they can mass produce this product that lives up to its specs without having a bunch of lemons. I guess more importantly, if they do have lemons, will there be easy returns such as on Amazon where it's just free return shipping if you're not satisfied.

Assuming this company is trustworthy, I see no reason to buy a similar ultrabook from say Sony, Samsung, Asus, Dell, HP, etc. since this one has all of them beat in terms of specs and pricing for me.

So far the main website I see it being sold on is Dynamism.com.
