Dynamism - Gigabyte U2442
new versions of U2442 are coming out with 256GB of SSD and 16GB RAM 1TB HDD?
-
-
That is an extremely expensive upgrade for what it is... Plus no control over which SSD (I would want to avoid Sandforce).
-
Plus, i dont really see a point in upgrading the stock 128MB msata to a 256. -
Seeing the limited number of recommended hard drives listed on Gigabyte's site, anyone tried others? Im thinkin of buying the 750GB Scorpio Black but not sure if it'll be compatible.
Anyone got ideas? -
Should be fine. They only provide the list of harddrives they've tried personally to confirm compatibility. Any 2.5" SATA drive should do the job.
-
I just got myself the Scorpio Black WD 750GB but not im totally lost in how to install it. Anyone have ideas on where to find the guides ?
-
Hi all, I just got a new U2442V (i7, 8GM RAM), and I've been trying to update the BIOS from F305 to F307A, but to no avail. I followed the instructions exactly as said in the PDF and created a bootable USB, but then once I try booting off of the USB, it goes straight to Windows 8 without prompting me via DOS re: flashing the BIOS! Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
Moreover, I'm having this weird bug in the BIOS - when I enter "Reset without saving" in the Aptio Setup Utility, my SSD would suddenly disappear, and I'd be unable to boot the computer to Win8 completely! It would only return after some time, for some weird reason. Did anyone encounter this as well? -
Werckmeister, did your U2442V come with Windows 8 preinstalled or did u upgrade?
-
-
-
What should I do? I just bought it from Taipei this weekend. I'm in Thailand now until early January - won't be based anywhere til Hong Kong in Early Feb. Sigh, what a disaster.... -
Still waiting on the U2442F to roll out...
-
Gigabyte u2442f have gt 650m with ddr3 memory? Is this confirm information?
-
Looks that way, it'll most likely be GDDR3 because of the power/heat requirements of GDDR5 make it impractical in 14" when the cooling system is working hard with the 650m and the cpu already. Though I imagine there is a high chance being the "premium" model it'll ship with a SSD and HDD. Maybe the reduction in prices of both of those in the last 6 months could get us an upgrade to 256GB/1TB respectively, though I doubt it. Wishful thinking.
-
Can you or anyone else confirm that there is an option to turn off the discrete nVidia GPU on the latest BIOS? If so, then the battery life on this laptop would be great on Linux until nVidia release Optimus drivers.
Obviously reboot into Windows to play games when required. -
It seems like the 'F' is shipping in Germany with the possibility to get the 'i5' which also resides in the 'N' version. Hmm i5 with a bit of extra power.. or the i7 which hopefully has better battery life.
-
Got a link to the german site?
-
I didn't look well enough. The i5 isn't the same model. But anyway.
Wait.. I think this has to be some kind of error. Since they list it as 'i5' but the model name is the 'i7' one. So forget what I said.

The new i5 version with Win 8 has recently been available from superbiiz. Lowest price for this variant I've seen.
There's also 10$ code SUPERSANTA. -
On the other hand, the i7/'F' just got 50 euro's more expensive. Bah.
-
The delay on the release of the U2442F is annoying.
-
-
Seems January for UK and February for USA... not good. Edging closer and closer to Haswell.
-
Adorama now carrying just the Win8 N variant as well. Selling for 1050 on their website leading me to believe excaliberpc and dynamism have been charging a little bit of a premium. Glad I got mine from superbiiz... Can't wait to get home and test it out.
-
Any news of a touch + IPS/PLS/VA variant of this on the horizon?
-
Just to let you guys know
a new u2442 variant is coming out in Jan (for Korea) called U2442D.
It has i5-3230M and geforce 730M(which looks like renaming of 640M~660M chipset).
excaliberpc has it on their website.

That's muddying the waters a little. I just want the F variant in the UK.
Unless they're refreshing the U2442F with Core i7-3667U instead of the i7-3517U. -
I sure hope they still have a 17W variant.
-
U2242Vand N are discontinued (Confirmed by official korean reseller) -
Guys, could someone clarify to me the specifications of U2442F? When it lists 128GB hard drive is that a 2.5" inch one or mSata? If it is mSata, does it mean that the laptop has an empty 2.5" inch bay? Is it easily accessible to install your own secondary HDD?
What is the difference between Intel Core i7-3517U and Intel Core i7-3537U? They have the same price at ExcaliberPC, which one should I go for?
Did anyone receive that laptop yet? I would like to see some basic benchmark numbers for 3DMark11/Vantage, did anyone test it? -
i7-3537U is 2ghz stock and 3.1ghz turbo.
i7-3517U is 100mhz slower on both
seems the U2442F will get the bump from 640m to 650m and cpu bumped by 100mhz and have a black LCD bezel instead of silver. -
-
They're both 17W CPU's and most CPU's get a slight bump mid-life cycle and consume same power and generate same heat so it should not be a problem.

So this model comes just with mSata 128gb drive? Does anyone know if it has an empty 2.5" bay as well? Is it easily accessible or would you need to completely disassemble the laptop? Could it void the warranty?
Some people said that it's probably GDDR3 650M, not GDDR5. Are there some benchmarks out there for either this laptop or a similar one with the same card? -
It's DDR3 650m, and pretty much the same as the Clevo W110ER. See my sig for benchmarks
Or here you go: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np6110-clevo-w110er-first-look-review.html -
The 2.5" bay should be empty unless they specify a 750/1tb drive on the specs. They recommend mailing the laptop and a drive to a repair center they run to do it without ruining the warranty. Bit of a hassle mind you
-
Far as I know the 'F' model comes with a 128 SSD and a 750gb HD.
-
GIGABYTE - Notebook & Netbook - Notebook & Netbook - U series - U2442F has been updated to show the black LCD bezel and the two processors. Looking good.
Also seemingly 256GB SSD 2.5" option. -
^Does look good. Just waiting now to see what price it is released at.
-
I'd be happier knowing the exact day it goes on sale on Amazon UK but we can't all win.

just got a confirmation from gigabyte. they'll not release a U2442 version with thunderbolt. they even made an official press release saying it would have thunderbolt. plane lies and vaporware. I'll never ever buy a gigabyte product again.
-
The CES 2012 last january said thunderbolt, it got scrapped on the final production models. You can see the space where the port was going to go on the chassis:
(next to the DC power input)
Yes this sucks, yes I wanted thunderbolt a lot. Probably for the same reason as you, the MSI GUSII. But since that is vapourware too what's the problem I guess? Sadly it didn't come to pass and I doubt it will until Haswell includes thunderbolt in the HM8x instead of leaving it as a third party chip. It's too power hungry and large as it stands. -
-
I'd love thunderbolt, I don't see it happening in ultrabooks until intel adds it to it's motherboard logic chips instead of as a supplemental addon. That's all I'm saying.
Probably saying all this to self justify buying one instead of being angry it doesn't have one. I suggest you grab the HP 15" thunderbolt equipped device if it's that important.
It's worth pointing out I'd have loved for gigabyte to have made a version of this U2442 with no nvidia gpu and thunderbolt for an external GPU.
Or... a macbook pro retina. -
so yeah, it's irrelevant, you can put thunderbolt in any notebook you want. Also @3W it doesn't require an heatsink, proof? you have intel atom cpu's with much higher TPD's then 3W that don't have anykind of heatsink and still work flawless 24/7. about cost if you ask? it's about 30$ per chip for the manufacturer.
so yeah, gigabyte could very easily add thunderbolt to a notebook. Actually they were the first produce and sell a desktop motherboard with thunderbolt, they were also the first to produce motherboards with 2 thunderbolt ports instead of one.
thanks for the HP suggestion, but it sucks, it's overpriced. it looks like a mac. I'll get a Lenovo T430s. Currently it's the only thunderbolt equipped notebook that doesn't have a soldered cpu. still expensive @1000$. I could also consider the Lenovo S430 @700$ or even an Acer S5. -
There has to be a good reason for why they showed off the CES2012 thunderbolt version, and have the space on the chassis for it and then not ship it? I dunno.
