P35x is definitely worth the extra money over P35w, however, P35w is a very capable machine on its own right. Moreover, P35x is the only 980m thin-and-light laptop on the market as far as I'm awared of, 970m on the other hand has options from MSI, Razer (to be announced?), and of course, P35w.

If you're nit-picking-kinda person, then P35 series is not a perfect choice: large bezel, uneven keyboard, and initial driver stability issues.

BTW, what I did to make the trackpad tolerable to use is by set the palm tracking to max. This way, the trackpad still recognise the tap with sensitivity set to high, and much reduced mouse jump when typing.

I'll still recommend to use external mouse and mechanical keyboard when possible, but at least it's usable now.

Processors mostly. Some have slight parts changes to build. Remember that once you pick a build, you're stuck with whatever processor it has.

Mostly importantly CPU, which cannot be upgrade. And display (3k or 1080p), very difficult to buy parts and replace. Otherwise just different size of SSD, hard drive, and RAM, all can be easily replaced.

    Cf 1 is 3k with 4860hq, 16 gbs of ram, and 2 128gb adds , cf2 is 1080 with 4710, 8gbs of ram, and 1 128gb ssds, cf4 is 3k with 4710 16 gbs of ram and 2 128gb ssds (all come with 1 tb hdd)

The cf1 can only be gotten from overclockers uk, so unless you are European it's not worth it. May not even be worth if you are European depending on what kind of deal you can get from shipping it from us where it's much cheaper

Thanks guys for making me feel better about the "bending" gigabyte would have had me send them the laptop for nothing...

Another issue I have, so I have win 8.1 installed - I noticed that wifi doesn't actually turn on until after I login. This doesn't seem to be the case on my old laptop nor my surface... do you guys have this problem as well? Its a good 10 seconds before wifi is on and connects to my ac router.

to the others replies the upgraded processor isn't totally worth it. You won't really use the more powerful intel gpu, and there have been some tests that it generates more heat which the laptop can't totally handle and may throttle.

For the processor: the cf1 is not worth the extra money. The processor in this one features iris pro integrated gpu (while you got 980m, ?) and you cannot use really the extra frequency because the heat generated by the more powerful igpu makes the cpu throttle more.

I would say stick to the screen you prefer (3 k is really good on this one, interpolates perfectly to 1080p and 980m is powerful enough to play some games at 3k) find the cheapest model with it and upgrade it yourself.

This laptop is really easy to upgrade. If you are comfortable with it, I did notice several versions without OS installed too, so you could cut prices down even more.

OK, silly question time, I'm trying to work out how many hard drives I can fit in the laptop, I bought the CF3 version with has a single 256gb and 1TB hard drive, is it fair to say that i have a free slot inside the laptop where I can fit another one, and of course add another in place of the optical drive.

    Thanks

Yes since have a single 256GB ssd. System only allows 2 msata ssds besides the mechanical hdd or ssd and optical bay that can house a ssd.

Anyone know how to disable the red light in the headphone port? I don't have any optical audio equipment so i don't need it.
Disabling digital output under playback devices does nothing...

You could physically cut the circuit to the light from motherboard, as far as I know there's no software setting to disable it. Most realistic way is to get a headphone jack plug, like the plug on the touchscreen pen.

Hey guys, it's been over two weeks since I applied the Noctua NT-H1 and it hasn't, despite popular reports, all disappeared and made my CPU temps worse than before. As I suspected, even if it's not one of the greatest pastes, it's pretty good and my temps are a good few degrees down from before. I still get throttling in games, especially brand new games like Far Cry 4 on Ultra etc, but I want to stress again that I never know the laptop is throttling in game, I don't have stutter. The only way I know it's throttling is by looking at XTU. I do wish the temperatures were better but whatever, my old laptop runs at 97 and it's still going strong 5 years on.

This is what we say, throttling does not affect that much gaming sensation (slight throttle of course).

I have to make my bow now: i did return my p35x, so I am not anymore a glorious owner of one of these babies.

Reason? My computer died, black screen without possibility to make it wake up again. I tried anything that another user here tried, and I did return it in the end.

At least it has a 2-year warranty so if it dies they have to fix it/replace it. I wonder if it was heat related. I've played a lot of games on it so I hope not :)

    Hello!
I'm going to buy this laptop in order to achieve high performance and mobility with my Oculus Rift. I know the laptop uses Nvidia Optimus technology with its GTX 980m. I need 120 Hertz video output through HDMI or mDP for Oculus Rift and monitors. The question is: is P35X v3 capable of outputting 120 Hertz video to mDP or HDMI connected display?
I know that if these ports are connected to Intel 4600 graphics adapter then it won't output more than 60 Hertz. But if these ports are connected directly to GTX 980m then it's theoretically possible to achieve 120 Hertz.
    Many thanks!

Oculus Rift DK2 runs just 1080p at max 75 Hz. For CV1 it's not yet know, neither resolution nor refresh rate, but expected to be maybe 1440p at 80-90 Hz, very unlikely anything like 4K or 120 Hz. And anyways it'll come just maybe end of 2015.

I have MSI GS60 with GTX 970M, which has mDP and HDMI driven by Intel GPU. I can confirm it can drive Oculus Rift DK2 via HDMI at 75 Hz just fine. So at least for now, P35X should be fine no matter to which GPU are ports connected. You'll get small latency penalty with Intel GPU driven ports, though it's still somehow bearable.

For other high refresh rate external displays with iGPU I don't know. 4K at 60 Hz should be possible. Not sure about lower res at 120 Hz. 1080p at 75 Hz does work.

Video ports are connected to igpu on this laptop. If you absolutely need portability with dgpu ports and 980m, check clevo p750zm, I think it would be your best option.

The mini displayport can handle 4k @ 60Hz just fine. The iGPU just passes on what the gtx980m renders. I myself have no problems running 1440p @ 60Hz, don't see latency.

My p35w sometimes does that with wifi, sometimes just clicking the icon seems to connect it, sometimes just wait a few seconds. My work Dell does similar so just figured Intel WiFi can be a bit dodgy when connecting.

It gets hot while under heavy load, but cools down very fast after. It also throttles when pushing very hard, but does not affect the performance.

Thanks for the quick answer. Can you clarify how it can throttle without affecting the performance? Every time I've had throttling problems on a laptop it came with massive temporary FPS drops. Thanks!

It doesn't affect fps much but showes up in monitoring softwares. I never pay too much attention to it, so maybe someone else can explain it better than I do, or you can read through the last 500-odd pages.

Asked GIGABYTE tech support and their response is:

After we checked with our test team:
We only support maximum 60Hz output to extend monitor in P35X V3

It means no luck here for Oculus Rift experience.
    Gonna research MSI laptops.

I think it depends. User with hot cpu (4980hq) reported annoying fps drops in shadow of mordor. On mine, with slightly cooler cpu (4710hq) after repaste and undervolting throttling only occurred in cpu intensive games.

Exemple with far cry 3, thermal throttling was around 20%, but fps were rather constant, around 45-50. There was no annoying stutter during game.

That's weird, I haven't had any frame rate drops in Dragon Age, Wolfenstein, Far Cry 4 or Shadows of Mordor, and I have a 4860HQ. Throttling shows up in XTU but I never notice it in-game either.

Edit: Yeah maybe as you say, in CPU intensive games I might notice it.
