So far I am loving this laptop.
Yes the oil is annoying but doesn't bother me because I love the black color so much. I still can't believe how sexy it looks.
After using it a while the keyboard works fantastic and no build quality issues at all.
I would have to rate the keyboard 8/10 just because I have personally used the MSI keyboard which is a 10/10.
But like a friend said what good is a keyboard if your battery is dead after 2.5 hours.
This keyboard is way over my expectations.
The other thing is the fan noice. On auto is awesome. On high it's a little loud but not near as bad as I thought when you watch YouTube videos. They make it seem unbearable. But I would say it's definitely acceptable if you are going into an hardcore gaming mode and you want full functionality.
... the only question I have is that when you put the fans on "auto high" it goes in between different speeds and before it goes to lowest speed the fans do howl just a tad almost like a whistle. It's not coil whine because I have watched many videos about that and it's not that. It's like the vents are kind of small and so much air is going through them at a certain speed it's like it's a faint whistle but not sure maybe it's just me because I'm not use to high powered fans.
New powerful laptops are new to us all.
If anyone can comment that would be great. ...
...
Also.
I have updated all drivers either through Smart Uodate or directly from gigabyte. I decided to stick with gigabyte only drivers except of nvidia at the moment. No problems just personal preference.
I do have a couple of qurstions.
1. In smart update everything is updated except nvidia graphics which shows 9.18.13.4477 and I have installed 9.18.13.4475 from nvidia experience. So gigabyte has a newer version. I am wondering if I should install that via smart manager or just wait for nvidia to update. Not really sure.
2. I have the wireless driver stock at 17.12.0.4 and 17.13.2.2 is available. I tried updating it but it changed all my wifi adapters and device manager network stuff to #2 naming. I know some people could care less about that but I unistalled it all and went back to gigabyte driver from their website. 17.12.0.4 I want to uodate these drivers without changing or adding another name.
I did this with the Lan driver because I just downloaded the latest Lan driver via gigabyte website and updated it through device manager which worked perfectly by locating the driver on disk.
The only problem is that I can't download the driver from gigabyte for the wireless one yet because it's not there.
I wonder where smart manager downloads the drivers. If we could find them that would be perfect. I might check windows temp file and it might just be there. Then I can update my wireless card via device manager and no renaming will occure.
...
Everything is running perfect so far.
I am still downloading EVE and BF4 and playing Sins of a solar empire and Civ 4 all at the same time.
With this card I definitely feel it is much easier to switch between all the games a problems compared to my GS60.
-
-
I dont think theres much harm in downloading the driver if it gives you problems just roll it back. Not sure about others, but the 1 blue screen i had lasted for less than a minute, then the laptop restarted. So if you download an unstable driver its not the end of the world. As to the fan whistle, i havent really noticed anything like that but if I do ill mention it.
Im running the wifi 17.13.2.2 and it seems it changed mine to wifi 2 aswell. Not sure why it did that or if there is a way to fix it but it doesnt seem to be affecting anything. The only problem ive had with the wifi is that sometimes from a cold boot i have to manually click on the wifi signal icon before the wifi connects. I guess this is a 7260 bug? Seems to work very well other than that, good upload and download speeds. It is a little annoying, but i rarely turn my laptop off anyway and it doesnt do it when waking from sleep. If anyone knows a fix to this would be appreciated.Last edited: Dec 18, 2014Arthedes likes this. -
One of the musts is doing a fresh 8.1 install imho, even though 7 was a great OS back in its time, it feels so laggy right now..
-
Bah FireStrike crashed using 344.75, Did anyone run FireStrike with these drivers? Will try it with beta drivers right now
-
Ok i am running bf4 and everything is perfect.
I have played sins civ4 and bf4.
I do not notice any performance drops at all.
When I have fans on max I have 0 power limiting problem.
I have complete stock system and it shows I have thermal throttling from my cpu.
I do not notice it in game but it says that it is there.
The gpu is staying so cool.
...
Question how do I simply turn off turbo? Set something to .99 I forgot.
Also when is the best undervolt in xtu for core 3 and 4?
I don't notice a problem with throttling I just want to run my CPU nice and cool. I'm sure it will be enough for me. -
Trying to figure out if this is Windows 8.1 related (3dmark11 runs fine), anyone completed FireStrike without erros on 8.1 with drivers 344.75?
-
I only change the dynamic voltage I believe it affects all cores. That is the only thing I mess with in XTU personally. -
Regards -
Mine came with 7, so you ran FireStrike without any issues? (using drivers 344.75)
-
Ok well I have tried everything:
Undervolt 3rd and 4th cores
Undervolt Dynamic in XTU
Turn off turbo
And the CPU heats up to 90 degrees no matter what I do.
The GPU however remains cool 24/7.
if I leave everything at default and just play I do not notice anything. BF4 runs perfect without a hitch.
I just don't like knowing my CPU is constantly hot at 90 degrees.
Maybe this is not a big deal. Probably not for me.
But I can see why people are upset that the CPU is locked at 90 degrees.
Only thing left I can do is try throttle stop for fun. But I don't know if it will really matter for my enjoyment of the game. -
Regards -
-
It throttles between 15 to 45 percent but averages 20-25 percent.
Yes I will play for like 30 minutes and post a screen shot.
I do not notice it in the game but I am just curious why it is set up this way.
Anyone know a good throttle stop guide? I am just curious to what this machine will do with 0 throttling.
...
I do have a question though. Is the GTX 980 fully utilized? I do not care about throttling but I do not want to waste my money either. If I can get a 970M and it work to full potential with CPU and no throttling will it be the same as this laptop?
I would say generally no because it does delivery much more FPS and I have noticed games running smoother.
What do you guys think? -
Just tried throttle stop and it does not stop it.
Does anyone know how to stop thermal throttling?
It's not a big deal.
I am just curious. -
Also, i put my laptop into standby last night, went to sleep, came back this morning and had to turn the computer back on. Get back to desktop, none of my previous stuff is there, so i assume it bsod'ed while in standby.
You can rename the wifi in the network adapters. Just right click the thing, hit rename, and remove the 2. -

Im actually getting really close to order the p35x v3 via hidrevolution. I have had contact with Ted the sales rep and they seem like a good company as they offered to do some stress tests to minimise risk of DOA.
Does anyone have any experience with HIDevolution? Is it a good company to buy from? How is their support?

I would try to buy from hassle free place to get your money back if there is a problem unless you have no other issues. -
Well, fresh install & factory drivers didn't solve the issue as well, I think it is corrupted VRAM.
-
The actual processor frequency actually doesn't drop down as much as the throttling graph suggests. -
Oh good point never thought to look at that. True the processor is always at least 2.9 and up.
So the percentage must be off. That is why I probably never notice a problem playing games.
Also the power limiting is never a problem for me. -

Just got mine. As garbageman said, the thing is damn good looking. I was not expecting it to be, I am really pleased with build quality. Currently updating Nvidia drivers, smart update etc...

For those interested, I can list the differences between this lovely laptop and the Clevo P651SG tomorrow, as I will be one of the few people to have had hands-on experience with both.
Hope all your P35X v3's are still treating you all well!
Oh, also, I will get around to updating the first post soon!

Curious thing, why afterburner has 2 GPUs one with 5GB one with 3GB memory

What voltage offsets are you guys using for XTU? I'm a noob at this, any pointers for what I should be looking at in XTU?
-
It says there is a lot of thermal throttling but CPU very rarely goes below 2.9 GHZ. I am fine with absolute stock settings. Runs everything perfect and I have had zero BSOD. Been playing for hours and hours. -
So no recommended tweaks?
I'm sitting on -50mv right now. Ran some benchs, seem stable. I probably won't go anything further than this because of the one guy who was -70mv for awhile then found instability.Last edited: Dec 19, 2014 -
The CPU is pretty much set at .89 .90.
Just not worried about it. Everything runs at stock perfectly and graphics card stays really cool.
Intel chips are designed to run at 100 degrees. So I'm fine with .10 buffer for longer life anyway. -
So far, I'm loving the laptop. Really, my only complaint is the fingerprints, especially on the keyboard. The laptop itself is pretty perfect, just need to test battery life when next quarter starts, but other than that, I'm very happy. So worried about denting or scratching the metal though :/..
When you have time, mind posting your driver versions through smart update? I wanna see if there's anything I can change because I think drivers are pretty much done for me now. -
-
Awesome, thank you! I missed that smart manager one some how. Whoops.
-
After your last post I said what the heck right before I go to bed I'll give undervolting another shot.
911!
The middle part is that last of the no to somewhat adjustments. After the red !!!
0 I mean 0 thermal throttling with perfect performance.
Here is what you do.
Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset = -70.31
3rd Core = 30
4th Core = 30
Windows Power Management = 99
Done!
You will enjoy = 0
BSOD
Thermal Throttling
Power Throttling
And Temperatures of
CPU = 80 - 85
GPU = 75 - 80
CPU Speed And GPU Speed
CPU = 3.0 GHZ Steady
GPU = Full Clock
Stock with no thermal paste and just cooling pad.
I really can't believe this. This will be my go to setup.
What I am saying is that when in not 2 tired I'll post another screen shot of a 0 thermal line and 0 thermal throttle line for 30 minutes straight of BF4 on Ultra settings.
Amazing. -

So i just installed some Crucial Balistix Sport 1866 CL10 RAM yesterday .Its running at the designated 1866 Mhz, had no issues so far.
Only had time to run a few tests yesterday
Winrar benchmark ( yes Winrar has a benchmark utility for RAM & CPU and it only needs like 30 seconds) jumped from 7017 to 8512 which is awesome (Asus G750JH with a 4700HQ and 16 GB of generic RAM scorred around 6300 iirc ).
Shadow of Mordor also got a nice kick to 70,97 Fps average. The biggest difference is minimum fps though- went from about 35 Fps to 47,69
So if anyone has the basic model with only 8 GB of ram, and another 150 Eur to spare i highly recommend these. The exact model number is BLS2C8G3N18AES4CEU if anyone's interested. -
What kind of XTU benchmark scores are you getting? With your 35,34,30,30 setup, I'm getting less performance than with something like 35,34,33,32

I have a question about windows for the current owners: did the laptop come shipped with a windows cd or was the installation file on the hard drive? This is because i want hidevolution to ship my laptop without hard drives but they dont include a windows 8.1 installation disk. The licence is coupled with the BIOS so I cant remove windows and get a discount. The sales rep says i need to either buy my own legal copy of windows or have them make some recovery disks for me so when i install my own ssd i can put those in, install windows and have it automatically recognise the licence key that is on the system bios.
Do i need them to make a recovery disk for me (which adds another 20 euros) so i can install windows on my own ssd or can i download a windows installation file from somewhere official, create a bootable usb drive, install windows and have it automatically recognise my licence key?

I changed 35 34 28 28 and also matched "Processor Cache Voltage Offset" with -70 I have seen some people try this as well.
Everything runs smooth so far but I think I do notice that the processor is not as fast.
In XTU the processor almost stays perfect at 2.8 GHZ flat line.
I mean it's a 2.5 GHZ Processor and it's giving me .30 boost perfectly cooled. Might be a win win I don't know.
There night be a better balance that I could keep playing with it.
...
I am just wondering if I should go back to a 970M that does not throttle but then again 970M cannot do Ultra maxed outed 60+ FPS. 980M can. -
So you are saying:
Dynamic: -70mV
Processor Cach Voltage Offset: -70 (I didn't even know this contributed to undervolting :S)
Multipliers: 35, 34, 28, 28
and it is stable? Did you loop a few runs of FireStrike with these settings? My experience so far clearly suggests this, power brick for this laptop is inadequate, Smart Manager always takes down brightness and keyboard backlight when it is running a demanding application, kinda frustrating, I am trying to debug this and if I cannot get around it, it might be the reason the laptop ships back.
-
With the settings of GarbageMan (without Processor Cache Voltage Offset):
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-4710HQ,GIGABYTE P35V3
CPU was below 81C entire run and GPU was below 78C. As he says there was no Thermal Throttling on XTU. -
I have fans on either auto high or just mas.
Brightness on manual = high
I think my favorite xtu setup is
-70 for both dynamic and cache
35 32 28 28
And .99 on both power management boost off -
Nah I am using auto-low, auto-high just sounds like there is a runway next to your home...
-
I think the perfect setup now will be able to find the perfect overclock for the GPU. Now with the CPU running a little cooler. Be nice to figure that out.
How do you overclock 980M?
Nvidia Inspector or just use XTU?
What's a good start?
