Have you tried submerging the laptop it in LN2? It might get that Haswell mobile chip down to 80 degrees :D

OT it will be interersting if the CPU will throttle during games and what impact it has on clockspeed and framerates.

Did you try undervolting? That can make a big difference.

Or Liquid Silver Pro (but one mess up using this and your computer is toast, do not use this unless you know exactly what you are doing.)

I am not seeing any throttling at FireStrike results, check the detailed results. They are pretty much in line with any other similar system with better cooling (if there was throttling we would see a bigger gap at the combined test compared to others).

If heatsink contact with the CPU die is lacking, Liquid Ultra won't do much good. Best bet is undervolting. Depending on how much you can undervolt, should be able to shave anywhere from 4-8C.

Btw Cakefish, can you open the back of the laptop and take pictures? It would really help me ease a bit. I am hoping for an upgraded cooling system (one more pipe maybe?) over v2. Thanks bro!

I have Crysis 3 up and running. How would you like me to go about benchmarking it? ShadowPlay video? :)

Also: played about with resolution in-game. 1080p looks alright when scaled to 1620p. Looks just like 1080p native does at 17.3" to my eyes. Will test that more by looking at both my Clevo and my Gigabyte running side-by-side tomorrow, or the day after.

No, but I once ran the notebook in 5C ambient temperature which helped :D

Most games shouldn't be affected by the CPU throttling to base clock, so don't worry!

That is great to hear! I cannot stand buying a lower resolution just because I may want to game at less than native once and a while. Considering 90% of the time I will be working at the desktop I don’t want to limit myself to that. Also I plan to run the external display and internal at same resolution and I HATE having to change settings every time I go back and forth between games on one or the other. This makes it an ideal solution to play at higher resolutions than 1080 when I can.

Only a couple of hours left before I HAVE to go to bed. So only benchmarks for tonight, I'm afraid. The good news is that after tomorrow's lectures I have all of the rest of the day and all of Thursday free to test, review and benchmark! I'll get around to everything asap, but for now, just gonna benchmark the 980M :)

I'm not too sure how to go about testing Crysis 3 as there is no in-game benchmark to standardise results. How should I test it?

Also, anyone know how to get Steam to recognise that I already have the game files and that it doesn't need to download the whole game from scratch?

Check the game settings and make sure its pointed to where your Steam files are located or something like that. That's what I had to do years back but haven't used Steam in the long time.

When I switch between Skyrim versions I just delete the files in .../Steam/Steam Apps/Common/Skyrim, then copy my clean save into it. Not sure if it would work if you never installed it onto your computer to begin with, but if you can it should be the same for other games.

I don't think Firestrike is as demanding on the CPU as some games or Prime Mark. And I assume cakefish only ran it for a couple minutes.

Here are the temps of the new Gigabyte Aorus with the same CPU.

@Ningyo: I never tried undervolting, but from what I read isn't it bascially just manually throttling the CPU? (which kinda defeats the purpose)

No, you let the cpu run at a lower voltage at the same speed, thus lowering the temps, making it throttle less actually. :)

EDIT: but if you undervolt too much, the cpu becomes unstable and you might see artefacts or crashes. Cant hurt tho, just reboot and try again!

    Average Framerate: 28.67
    Max. Framerate: 166.42
    Min. Framerate: 10.54

    Max GPU temp: 80°C
    Max CPU temp: 91°C

    Metro Last Light Redux

Settings: 2880x1620, Very High, Tessellation: Very High, SSAA: No, PhysX: Yes

    Average Framerate: 32.00
    Max. Framerate: 182.18
    Min. Framerate: 8.73

    Max GPU temp: 81°C
    Max CPU temp: 92°C

    Up next... Tomb Raider...

P.S. I will make sure to make a pretty graph of all these results once I have time - organise the results properly etc. For now, I just want to get something to show you before I go to bed!

No undervolting is the opposite of overvolting (undervolting is safe worst case you BSoD restart and change the voltage back, Overvolting is very risky and can destroy your CPU)

Underclocking would be the opposite of overclocking and they are very different.

You can actually undervolt and overclock at the same time, though you may not be able to undervolt quite as far.

Here is a large thread all about it : http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/235824-undervolting-guide.html

It can be a tedious thing to do, but it can have major benefits especially in thinner laptops with barely enough cooling.

Great success! 30 FPS maxed 3K in probably the most demanding game out there today. Very nice!

EDIT: We know the temps of the hardware when gaming now, but how hot does the chassis get? Is the bottom and top where the cpu and gpu are too hot to touch or just a bit warm? Is the keyboard too hot to touch in any areas? How warm are the wristrest and the trackpad?

I was gonna take the bottom off for you all but there's 15 screws I'd have to undo... and I don't feel like undoing 15 screws and putting them back in this late at night. Tomorrow, or the day after, yes definitely!

Also one screw is a different fit to my screwdriver so have to locate right screwdriver head to avoid stripping the screw head off.

    OK... back to benchmarks...

Yes, but it is a rubbish cooler - never managed to cool my Clevo. I think a U3 would work much better. Might be worth investing in one...

Very similar to my Clevo P170SM at maximum load, if you know how loud one of those gets?. Silent as a mouse at idle (so far).

How does one undervolt? I have XTU installed. Could give it a go right now...

You could but it might take you 12-48 hours to do it right. You probably could do a very minimal safe undervolt and not try to fine tune it to the extremes, but read that undervolting guide I linked on page 8 of this thread.

Seconded. You can't really compare temps with cooler to other notebooks that were tested without any external cooler :(

Also room ambient temperature would be useful for comparisons.

Only if you have the heater turned on (so from 15°C to 30°C), otherwise it's under 10°C.
