edit i want to throw this in, that aorus forum adds 3 months to your warranty when you register your laptop with their forum.
they also just gave all the posters with 10 posts or more a tshirt or a hoody. hard to beat that.
two small comments.
one is thf e light on the back of the lid is way cooler than the other guys. it becomes a silver thing when off you would not expect to be a light. the light also tells you about the sleep or hibernate status. if you have ever closed your notebook and it didnt sleep and melted in your bag you will appreciate this. close the notebook. look at the light. when its off its asleep, then put it away. pretty well thought out.
sleep is WAY cooler than the old days. I put my laptop into sleep and i literally fall asleep and when i wake up its still in sleep and it went down 2 percent.
aorus does have usb on to charge your phone. it comes from the rear usb, perfect design. a lot of people have commented that the usb port in the back is weird.
its there so you can plug your phone into it to charge it up when its in your messenger bag or sleeve.
In short its the best designed notebook ever lol. I am not so hot on how large it is.
it is very large in fact its pretty much similar in size to a macbook pro 17.... it is actually thinner but its shape is larger than its lcd.
i got a sleeve that is up to 16 inch laptops, from whenever they were around, and it fills it to the seams. So I think its fair to say this is a 16 inch laptop
I have never ever seen a laptop screen like this. It is the most amazing screen ever.
I have never seen the 4k izgo screens but ive seen the 1080p samsung pls in the gs60 and this is so much more vibrant. Its very bright.
windows works great in this resolution. once in a while a browser that needs you to fill something in is too small and i switch chrome to 150 and its works great.
every single game ive tried works in this resolution.
Im extremely happy with this laptop.
the main negative is the size compared to a gs60 pro which was my main competitor. but my main plus is the screen and gpu
also so far it runs extremely cool. Im using it in a cool starbucks though. I think.... that this chassis can handle 970m. ill try to attach my 3dmark scores and temps. the gpu doesnt really even start to move until you do the firestrike score, and even then barely moves.
is this the same exact heat synch as the x7? throw the 970m in there.
and this is stock too..... so i had a little better scores than the two reseller reviews stock.
during the last test, according to this, after it ran the other two tests the gpu actually got cooler than idling during the firestrike test.
i didnt really even hear the fans much and the laptop was completely cool to touch.
the power supply was really hot though.
there was also some sort of error during one of the physics test where the fps froze.

heres a new firestrike score 9505
thats way above a 980mLast edited: Aug 22, 2015 -

ancient chinese secret
this is with untuned overclock. basically the card seems to be vbios limited. doesnt even really get hot. i am working on some tuning.
but the score with no cpu overclock and no artifacts is more like 9000
9313 is going great.
at the futuremark sight for this model the next best scores to mine are all 8600. i might have a newer gpu or something couldnt really tell you. maybe i should check out the futuremark forumAttached Files:

heres the model of m.2 ssd in our laptops for 80 bucks
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lite-On-L8T...3-65mm-1374-/361369062339?hash=item5423464bc3
for some of that 3 raid 0 m2 ssd stuff ive heard about. -
i just did a search to make sure, and the top score from a clevo p650 with the 980m is 9782
so thats better no doubt. its with a 4th gen cpu also, so the 980 laptops have higher scores. im not sure what kind of heat they go through oced like that but im wrong in that they seem to be faster.
the memory of the 965 wont clock as high as the memory in the 980. cant reach 4000 mhz. but the core can be oced 135 which is max without a new vbios. gets barely hotter. -
howre you getting those scores though? what are the settings?
-
If youre not familiar with ocing laptops
Read some guides online and youtube.
All manufacturers have an ocing software including gigabyte. But i dled theirs and i dont like it.
I can remember using msi afterburner but i dont like it now either.
I use evga precision 16. Its only for nvidia. It has the profile for our gpu new as it is
For ocing the cpu you can use intel xtu.
But it barely makes any difference so skip it.
9217 is what futuremark calls a gamer pc so i just qualify.
Also oced im at above what a stock x7 does.Last edited: Aug 23, 2015 -
i mean what were your default scores pre OC? I would only OC if im playing a game not getting good fps
-
Yes or taking a 3dmark test to see the temperatures
7901i think stock
Has everyone upgraded the bios i havent yetLast edited: Aug 23, 2015 -
Make some pictures and share your unboxing to color this thread a bit.
Looks like the Aorus X7 little brother is a smash hit as well -
id look at the gentech unboxing video in the first post here aristar has it.
mine looked like that. definitely the coolest packaging of any laptop. so far as i can see. nice black box and little microfiber sacks
metal little usb driver disc.
its really hard to relate the screen in a picture which is amazing. playing metro redux at this resolution is amazing. you can get a p35x with the same screen and the 980m not gsynched though
i love this resolution for windows could never go back. -
yeah, the screen is honestly amazing. Its hard to describe, but literally the best screen ive ever seen on a laptop.
stamar likes this. -
when you turn off g synch it goes even higher.
this is just because it wont let the fps go up to 70 plus for the graphics part of the score because the refresh rate is 59
ive looked into it and its simple to overclock the screen to 72 mhz. but i want to try and track down the owners who had the screen in a msi gt60 just to save myself time and see if they did it.
the screen may look even better actually.Attached Files:

heres a good video for the first post too
https://video.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net...=902196fb922b04c8e0b15c9b3b8c31b6&oe=55DE941E
about how it won the design awards at computex. the keyboard they made did also. -
I may be wrong
But so far as i know no one has had a manufacturers defect on an aorus x5.
At least not with complaining on forums.
Several soft brick problems but....
I saw one review on newegg that said they got a faulty 2nd gpu. But i bet its user error
Whereas..... Many gigabyte models had problems.
Most retailers are sold out.
Overall without knowing it seems like quite a success. -
build quality on this is amazing. I think my wifi is defective though I'll be replacing to see.
-
I have a lot of projects in store for my x5 that are awaiting deliveries.
But one project i want to report back on it is overclocking the lcd.
My goal was to overclock the lcd to 72 from its stock 60. many lcds overclock within the nvidia panel to 75 and some are stellar overclockers up to 100 mhz
this one is not it doesnt overclock past 66 . Even though this is disapointing when i set it to 66 and did a standard firestrike test the score went up 300 points.
I cant notice any difference yet. but obviously with g synch enabled being able to go up in fps helps -
I made a video of my laptops sleeve and aluminum briefcase
Showing almost a custom fit.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B79e7kAo7XOQdUsyNFBBcXhZQkE/view?usp=docslist_api
really i wish the case were also black aluminum.
but all things considered im pretty happy.
my laptop briefcase is a 3 inch model. i can certainly see a reason to get a 4 inch model with the size of the power brick. it has to fit on the space opposite my sleeves pocket or the case wont close
if i had a 4 inch i could also fit a laptop cooler.
but in my case, I also have a msi hermes backpack coming that can fit the whole kitchen sink, this briefase being almost skin tight is good.Last edited: Sep 1, 2015 -
Wow my hdd d drive just seems to have failed.
Barely a month old.
Heard it clunking and it doesnt seem to be responding.
Dont know how im going to deal with it. Send it to seagate or whoever first.
dont want to ship my laptop to city of industry for a hdd. im not sure who the warranty for the hdd is with
it is making crunching sounds lol it seems to insta died no access to d: at all
bios still recognizes it as there hitachi i guess
i will send xotic pc to ask who covers an hgst drive in a an aorus im not actually sure.Last edited: Sep 1, 2015 -
Damn that sucks. Atleast you know it has a 2 tar warranty
-
well the hdd costs like 60 bucks. im not sending the laptop to gigabyte. maybe the hdd.... hopefully i send it to hitachi.
and just shop for another one. im going to take it out and put it in an external but im not too hopeflly.
i heard it crackling lol and now its stopped -
I'm all ready to repaste my X5, but have had a serious shortage of time as of late. When I get around to it eventually, I'll post my findings here.stamar likes this. -
I havr all the pasting stuff on order
Please when you do paste write about the spots to paste.
Theres obviously 3 and a fourth aparently. Screws and spots
Im going on mostly the p34g repaste video on youtube so differences between that would be good
Well if the panel could overclock to 75 it would gsynch at whatever rate it reaches.
For older games. So that would be better.
I dont understand yet if gsync will go to other panels or not. Its another project for another dayLast edited: Sep 2, 2015 -
The screws that need to be removed are the ones that hold the cooler down. It's all one piece and should be pretty straightforward, but if you want me to, I could outline the screws in a photo.
-
ok well heres todays news
gigabyte wont rma just the hdd. so id have to send the laptop to them for weeks.
for a 70 dollar part
so i am going to attempt to rma it to hitachi
i used undervolting of 75 to reach 3 c cooler temp during the firestrike test -
-
I feel certain that the newest update makes the fans go slower.
I never reached throttling before this week.
In fact i can look through my firestrike scores i posted here and they never throttled. But now during the physics test my temp goes to 95 ( now 92 with undervolt) and throttles as much as 50%
Fps during that part of the test dropped from 36 to 32.
Either i have burned my paste off from it being new which is what i thought at first.
Or the new either bios or command control turns the fans on later .
In related news i want an app to just turn the fans on max. Simple on off switch. -
There is talk in the X7 section about changes as well, so Aorus has probably tweaked the settings with the last Command & Control center.
-
I did a repaste and am testing so far its so much lower in temperatures i dont believe it.
Now that i have seen it i understand there are 4 places to paste
Or technically 5 as the igpu has its own die next to the cpu
But i did not repaste the 4th spot. I left the 2 heat synchs joined together and repasted the dies.
I have pictures but i may repaste again to get it all straight. -
Does anyone know which is gpu 1 and which is gpu 0?
Lets call one of them thr gpu with a seperate heat synch and one with a heat synch shared with the cpu.
Which is which? It stands to reason to me the one with 2 pipes welded to the cpu is hotter that the one with 1 pipe pasted to the cpu. But i could be wrong.... -
Well the repaste i have the cpu is normally between 89 to 91 in firestrike physics. No throttling at all. With multipliers set 33 and 37
There really is nothing else necessary but i think i can redo it and it will be better still. -
well i removed the avermedia card and put in a 500 gb samsung m2 500
and upgraded to 32 gb ram.
my hdd is dead i havent sent it in or replaced it. so the samsung is my storage until i figure out whats going in my 2.5 bay.
I have been shopping for a 1 tb ssd
and almost set on the crucial bx100 because it uses the least amount of power. but then almost considering just getting another m2 ssd samsung and an internal enclosure for it. then eventually getting samsung 850 and switching it to 3 spot raid 1.5 tb. -
are you running striped across the 3 ssd?
-
no. i have the 2 lite ons still in raid 0 512 gb and the new 500 gb just as storage.
the new m2 is larger than the og ones. so it cant raid 0 with them.
so when i install something in the hdd slot i will have.... 4 physical drives. 3 seperate drives.
at first i thought about getting a 3rd lite on for 3 raid, but the 500 gb samsung 850 was only like 150 bucks or 50 more. didnt make sense. -
for what it matters the aorus forum admin says there are new models ready but he cant tell us. he had a hint about something to do with cooling.
I didnt know this when I bought this but the broadwell chip fits in haswell laptops. you could basically consider it, haswell 2.
or it is actually a haswell chip with a die shrink and a improved turbo mode
but the skylake does not.
so in truth more broadwell laptops will be introduced still -
yeah, I heard similar stuff. I guess I will wait for the refresh then.
-
G'Day ladies and gents.
I got the Aorus x5 about a month ago and it's pretty darn good.
BUT! the screen is a little wobbly and it looks a little too flashy for me.
I normally like flashy, but I couldn't possibly let on how much I paid for it to family/friends so I was wondering if it is CONSIDERABLY more powerful than the P35X v3/v4?
If not, I'll probably try and find some sort of swap type dealy, otherwise I'll keep it.
Any one know some benchmarks for both?
Cheers -
It is similar enough
-
The aorus x5 has cooler gpu. It normally has a better screen it has a 3k panasonic panel...
It has 3 m2 ssd and 1 2.5 inch hdd whereas the p35 x has 2 msata and. Can have 2 2.5 hdd
X5 is larger and its cooler. But the performance is similar. In games. In most the x5t is better. -
I just got a review unit of the X5 and I can´t get the CPU to run under 95C and at full speed.
I´ve undervolted -70 mV to 1.041V, it´s elevated and I´m on max fans in Command & Control.
XTU, 3DMark, games, they´re all 90-96C and mostly below 3.5 GHz due to thermal throttle.
Was this everyone elses experience too before repaste?steberg likes this. -
I seem to recall reaching 3.2 GHz on stock paste and full load. Taken into account that the base frequency is 2.7 GHz, that's not too shabby. Furthermore, a repaste is probably the most worthwhile upgrade on this notebook.
-
i did repaste
i did have overheating. the heat sync comes in 2 peices make sure to repaste where they connect -
in the aorus forum it says there will be 2 x5s coming out within 2 months
one seems to be, skylake and 2 965m with pcie and usb c
the other seems to be a x5 dt. imo, this will have a 970 dt
the purpose of the dt is to use with occulus rift.
Im not sure why the sli notebooks wont work with occulus rift or if they will. they dont have optimus -
I still love my aorus x5. Mostly for the screen.
I have had a glitch and that is I've had freezes gaming on battery.
I personally believe it's software. But it could be the battery can't actually power the 2 gpus.
Either way in can live with it.
Everything working great. Definitely love being ssd only. And using the avermedia slot for another ssd -
The x5 Will be just 980m so it won't be for oculus rift.
-
There seems to be two Skylake versions of the X5: the Optimus-enabled X5S v5 with a 980M and a X5 v5 with 965M SLI and no Optimus. I don't see why the SLI X5 v5 wouldn't be compatible with the Oculus Rift in Extended Mode. Aorus confirmed earlier that their testing team was able to use the Rift on both the original SLI X5 and X7, although that could have been pre SDK 0.7. Sure, it may not meet the FPS target, but it could still be compatible. If not, little is known of Steam VR requirements. HTC's Vive isn't a bad alternative, and there will be other units built on the same platform.
