Nice writeup. I'd like to see a side by side of that and the Aero 14.

Is the battery 73wh or 94? Newegg and some review sites say 73, but xotic pc says 94..

Looks like that's based on an older spec sheet, the ones that are being shipped now look to be all the 73.23 instead of the 94.24. I've contacted our product team about this.

So the v7 was originally shipping with a 94.24wh battery? Sorry for any confusion

Gigabye/Aorus advertised it with both for a while and they list both on their website still. I haven't seen any of the 94.

I ended up ordering the V7 because I wasn't too fond of the small defective kinks on the aero 14... I'm hoping for a better experience on this.... Will update if I like it...

Please do come back and post your thoughts! The X3 has been one of my considerations for a long time, but on the V6 model I was put off by 90+c CPU temps in a couple of reviews.

This and the Aero 14 have been on my list for quite some time...I noticed on recent reviews for the V7 that it maintains very healthy operating temperatures under load.... I recently re-purchased the aero 14 for the second time in the past month and I'm now in the process of returning it(again)... So I'll definitely let you/everybody know how it goes..

Doesn't feel like something I'd spend 1750 on...intense light bleed and webcam leaking the LCD backlight makes it look cheap...It has weird optimus issues where the GPU is always on when the computer is put to sleep then turned on again...Doesn't really feel all that solid to me aside from the build quality praise and the fact that it has a plastic housing... I really believe the only thing that justifies the price is the fact that it's .78" thin with a gtx 1060 and an alleged 10 hour battery life... I'll give praise due to the aesthetics where it's not the pretentious nerdy look like Asus or MSI.... It also is able to dissipate heat pretty well for having such a small form factor.... I really wholeheartedly wanted to like the Aero 14 and there is a possibility where I got unlucky or I'm just too picky....

I see. I do have one myself, and I would like to address your concerns.

The panels are actually aluminium, not plastic: http://www.gigabyte.com/Laptop/AERO-14--i7-7700HQ#kf

The weird webcam leak is evident on my laptop when I am in a completely dark room, but I have not noticed any light bleed from the screen at all. The optimus issue (their emptyproject11.exe) is easily fixed. Battery life for me has been approaching 9-10 hours watching TV shows/ youtube or browsing the web.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with mine. I was also deciding between the x3 and the aero 14, and I am pretty happy with the choice I made.

Well the panels are aluminum but they are just for show glued onto a plastic chassis. It gives it no structural integrity whatsoever. So in that sense, yes it is a plastic laptop. Those thin sheets bend incredibly quick.

I owned a few Gigabyte laptops and I checked a lot of disassembly videos as well. Its common practice unfortunately. The same goes for some Asus models, the outside seems like aluminum but the inside chassis is plastic. Thats why a lot of had hinge problems where the metal hinges cracked the plastic chassis.

I had to send a P34W v3 2 times back because it would bend in my Crumpler laptop bag while travelling. It was so incredible weak that after a few trips to and from the office would cause the laptop to wobble on a perfectly flat table. Worst laptops I ever owned and they where priced fairly high as well.

    Hey folks

I see almost no information on this laptop and very few reviews. Is it worth getting?

I'm looking for a lightweight powerful laptop for coding with a really good retina style screen.

I also play games sitting in bed on my lap which are not hugely graphic intensive but require a decent trackpad

Ideally i want something very high quality, that does not get overly hot or loud for coding. I can accept abit of noise for gaming

    Thanks Josh

What you want doesnt come together in any gaming laptops, thin and lightweight laptops all run hot and fairly loud. The best cooled smaller laptops are the MSI 15inch at this time and the AW13R3 but they are heavier than this machine and still are fairly loud.

The trackpads are not good for gaming on any gaming laptop so dont place your bets on that.

There's got to be another material they can make the cases out of. I don't like metal because if you bend them even a little they will never fit exactly right even if you bend them back until they look perfect. I don't like the plastic currently in use because it doesn't flex as much and repeated torsion can crack it in thinner units. And the hybrid panels combine both problems without really solving either as you've mentioned.

I loved the magnesium constructions of later Vaio models such as the Vaio S13 (SA/SB) series, it was very durable, strong, well made and fairly light. I dont get it why more manufacturers used that material and technique.

I had this laptop before I had the Z13 which was made out of aluminum and carbon fiber.

Costed me only 1100USD and the build quality was exceptional still to this day.

Best I've seen lately is a magnesium aluminum alloy in a couple, but I worry that it will share more properties with aluminum than magnesium.

Thanks for that, a very informative video. I had no idea, just assumed that since things were being advertised as either "magnesium" or "magnesium alloy" that they were two different things. #themoreyouknow

yes, magnesium is really lightweight but it is not so strong and for this reason it needs another material like magnesium

at the moment there are magnesium alloys with these components:alluminium, lithium, titanium, zirconium, zinc, cadmium, silver, manganese, copper and also rare earth.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_alloy#Casting
    http://www.mah.se/upload/_upload/Al alloys and Mg alloys.pdf
    http://metalpedia.asianmetal.com/metal/magnesium/application.shtml
    http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Magnesium_alloy

factories make laptop/tablet/smartphone cases with hot/cold press forming.
for example magnesium-titanium alloys are used for biomedical device :)

i know a laptop with a cases in magnesium-lithium alloy ( NEC LaVie Z UltraBook)

Just received the laptop today... I am very impressed by the x3 so far and I believe I will be keeping this since it just feels all around better than the aero 14 to me.. Opening the laptop was one of the most pleasant unboxings I've ever had as it was so elegant and neat... Only cons are: possible coil whine from the gtx 1060 under load(couldn't confirm for sure) and this screen(LQ140Z1JW01) is not that great... It's super bright and over saturated out of direct sight which effects the viewing angles tremendously...However the color accuracy is really good on the screen...Last thing is the fan noise..Any basic tasks ramps up the fans..

Right out the box it was overclocked to 4.3ghz turbo boost..I downclocked it to 3.9 and undervolted it 90mv... A quick game of league had the CPU temps in the mid 70's and the 1060 in the mid 60's.... It feels/types super solid and I absolutely love the trackpad.. It's a solid 9/10 for me right now until further notice lol.. I can't really think of anything else to add..

Thanks a ton for your thoughts. Regarding the fans, perhaps there is a way to set the fan curve?

Those temps are hard to judge since LoL isn't particularly demanding, but if you happen to run benches / stress tests, then I'd very much appreciate you sharing those temps.

What are your thoughts on the overall build quality / feel-in-hand and portability of the laptop? One thing that I find very attractive about the X3 are those thin bezels which give it an overall smaller footprint than it's chief competitors (the Gigabyte Aero 14, the Razer Blade, and the MSI GS43VR). While it is a tad thicker than the first 2, I don't feel that impacts portability as much as does the overall size.

As for the viewing angles on the screen, it's an IGZO display which means it has worse viewing angles than your typical IPS but is better than TN. Whenever you get a chance to play games and do more tests, I'd very much love to hear your input on response times, and whether or not you get any ghosting.

Thank you for remembering this thread :)

    Fan Settings.jpg OC Settings.jpg

The thickness doesn't make a difference to me at all to be honest since it is designed so sleek. It is pretty well built to my understanding so far and I also agree with the thin bezel giving more screen room. That was one of the first things that I noticed. It feels really good to carry/pick up being that it is long from front to back, however the sides are shorter than any laptop on the market with relative specs. The only slightly concerning thing is the hinge feels kinda flimsy and isn't as sturdy as I'd like it to be. The keys definitely have way less travel time, but I enjoy the feel even coming from mx blues.

When I get time I'll definitely run some temp tests..

Hey did yours come with the old cheap Samsung PM951 drive? Mine did. Read speed is 1,500mb and write is 500mb. Its attrociously bad in a $2k laptop

Yeah it did come with the same exact ssd... Only thing that's annoying to me so far is the quality control for the screen.. I see a ton of people having issues with this screen as this model was also in the razer blade.. I saw a few threads where people have a yellow tint on the whole side of their screen with the V7... I got a good one compared to the other ones I've seen as a real small area is effected..I don't want to run the risk of possibly getting an even more defective screen with a replacement since everything else is flawless...I've dealt with screens that look way worse on a consistent basis..

Battery life is between 5-6 hours and if squeezed possibly 7..

Re the screen. Yeah it is disappointing that it's the same as the old razer blade one. I was hoping for a step up

    Cons
    * viewing angles are horrifically bad. Similar to tn
    * brightness is not nearly as high as my AW17r3 4K Igbo

    Pros
    * no light bleed
    * no yellow tint
    * no dead pixels

Overall the slow ssd is very frustrating for me and the sole reason I may return it. This is a $2k machine released in 2017. Write speeds of 500mb is absolutely unacceptable. I do heavy coding so ssd speeds matter

The only other thing is that the trackpad is the minimum acceptable but it is definitely not good. Not as good as Alienware or many others I've used

On the positives, the machine is absolutely beautiful and I like the keyboard... and mine runs very cool and quiet

Still the same screen as the v1 3 years ago... Good grief, I wish they'd come up with a better panel by now.

If they're only going to give one screen option, they need it to be a good one. Also, why is the 94 Wh battery version so hard to find. What components does it trade out to accomplish its better capacity? Or if there's no trade, and there's just a better battery in there, why does the 74 Wh version even exist? The cooling design makes me leery, too, even if the heat sinks are better than the XPS 15, the x3 shares the same anemic 2 heat pipe design that's caused my father to be on his third XPS 15. Overall a very good machine, but there's some work to be done.

    Aorus X3 R7(I'm guessing "revision" 7 now?)

They finally changed the horrendous IZGO display to an IPS QHD display: AUO B140QAN01.5.

This was my ONLY gripe from the previous models, glad they listened. It looks way better now..

    Thanks for the information!

I did a search for the R7 variant but couldn't find any screen details or specific reviews on the new version.

How are you finding the newer panel?

    https://www.eteknix.com/gigabyte-aorus-x3-plus-r7-gaming-notebook-review/

this is the only review you will find lmao....and it's legitimate(at least I believe it is) because it was hosted on Aorus' website...

I noticed that nobody included IZGO in the description of the panel...So I took the chances of buying it again seeing as how the "V" is an "R" now... The box also says IPS display..

Once I received it, I fired up HWINFO and got the model number...another thing that confirmed it was the horrendous viewing angles of the IZGO and the yellow tint issue are non existent on this..
