Recently tried a usb c hub that contained an hdmi input. My Aero 14 gave an error that "displayport connection may not work" and nothing happened. Wondering if this is due to it being a crappy usb hub because the mouse was also pretty laggy or if other people have had this issue. It seems like USB 3.1 should support displayport input. Do I need to do a configuration somewhere?

Unfortunately it does not. My monitor supports DP-Alt mode off USB-C but the Aero 14 did not have compatibility for that feature.
You might as well use the mDP or other HDMI port.

EDIT: DP-Alt mode is supported off USB 3.1 and type C, but the reverse is not true. It's up to the manufacturer on what they use.
