AERO 15 owners, what has your experience been like with the longetivity of the AERO 15 laptops?

Hello Guys,

I am about to pull the trigger on an AERO 15 OLED i7-9750H, GeForce RTX 2060, 16GB RAM, 512GB M.2 PCIe SSD, Win 10 Pro Gaming Laptop.

This will be the most expensive investment I'll be making in electronics/tech I've ever made. I had a few questions and was hoping some experienced owners, new and old could help me make a concrete decision.

1) Can I expect this laptop to last me the next 4 to 5 years minimum?
I don't mean this in terms of how soon the tech inside will be outdated but how long do you think the laptop will physically hold up? The internals? The heat? The Chasis? The Hinges? The Panel?

2) Should I drop $300 on the one year extended warranty?
It already comes with a 1 year Manufacturer's warranty but do you think I should extend this by another year to protect this huge investment?

3) Any final thoughts, words of caution, or advice before I go broke?

I am interested in this machine because it provides a combination of all of the following.

1) 4k AMOLED Panel
2) Superb Battery Life
3) Thermals. At least they look excellent in pictures, videos, etc..
4) Full Number Pad
5) i7 9th Gen
6) Slim chasis
7) Not too gamerish looking

On paper, all this looks outstanding for the package.

 

The experience my friend had with his Aero 15 was disappointment. He absolutely loved the Aero 15 w/ 8750h 1070mq 4K panel

Except backlight bleed was so bad it was yellow instead of black, the keyboard was ghosting and for w/e reason it would become unusable trying to get games to run at 1080p (since playing at 4k isnt much of an option) and he went through 3 of them at his local shop. Its worth noting that it was the last three at the store so its likely only lemons were left but he was heartbroken taking that machine back to the store. I suggested the older (and used) Alienware 13 R3 as a compromise and while he likes it, hes still eyeing the one that got away.

Its a high performance, low profile machine. If you are committed to using it for its lifespan I would definitely get the warranty.

 

I've had my unit for almost two years, and I'm sure it could last another two. Build quality is decent, but I would recommend taking care of the device (as I would with any other). As far as heating effects on internals, I have not come across much, but I do regularly switch thermal pastes just to keep things up and running efficiently (my unit came with an uneven heatsink so cooling isn't as good as other units, but thermals don't go past 85C, which is fine for me).

I would suggest buying this through a third party and get their warranty instead, since with Gigabyte you'd be dealing with an international service AFAIK.

Again, it's a lottery with these devices. Some have weird thermals (like me), strange battery draw (I idle at around ~12Wh instead of 7-9), Support from Gigabyte in terms of software usually only lasts about a year, then you're pretty much on your own, and there's always the infamous keyboard issues. I hope they've fixed this with the newer generation, but it's something to consider (the only issue I have with mine is that some key combinations won't accept more than two keys, which isn't good) Aside I think the newer gen keyboard does not have a backlight for the function keys, might want to check on that. I'm not a huge fan of the nose cam.

 

OLED panels will have burn-in in 5 years. I reckon it's going to be a fad for laptops. I haven't seen any technology on TVs that prevents burn-in, so it's going to be worse on a laptop with constant icons on-screen. Go for an LCD instead if you want 4-5 years of moderate use. The heat in my Gigabyte laptop (not Aero but similar thermals) has ruined two batteries in the space of 6 years. There's no way around that. Constant high temperatures degrade capacity of lithium batteries. You'll see your remaining battery go down as time goes on, and eventually it may get so bad that you'll have to replace it. This will be the same with any similar laptop. Don't bother with the 1 year extra warranty, it will be after 2 years that things start to go wrong.

My OG Aero 15 1060 is still going strong. Over two years. I did have a fan go out, but they replaced that pretty quickly.

Disclaimer, I used it with a 3 monitor setup, didn't use it as a conventional laptop, but more like a mobile workstation.

Gamed pretty hard on it with Starwars Battlefront's, Battlefield, and Fortnite. Some CSGo too.

It will be a great machine for years.

From what I recall about aero's they do over heat easily. I would hold off and look at either a msi, clevo or tongfang equivalent, all of which have the same specs and preform better thermally.

 

I have a aero 15 with 8750h and 1070. I love the thing but the screen bleed is the worst.

I.use my for business and playing game watching videos. I like the light weight, I can pick it up one hand and take it to the warehouse and print all of my shipping labels, then back home hook it up to my screen keyboard set up for a bigger picture.
I've noticed in the past 8 month the screen bleeding it getting worse. I've email gigabyte support about it and they said it can't be replaced under warranty since it's not a defect.

 

i have the new oled version with 1660Ti the gpu temp is really good but the cpu temp spikes to 90C easily not sure why and not sure this thing is going to last like this

 

I use mine as my mobile business "desktop".

Its pretty perfect at that.

A cooling pad does wonders for the CPU temps, fwiw.

I have never used a cooling pad but I have seem it never works.

 

Recently got the new aero 15 with the 144hz panel and rtx2060 and I couldnt be happier. Everything works as it should and the device is properly cooled as well. would only recommend.

 

Which processor... Wishing I didn't get the i9, runs hot no matter what.
