    [>>AERO 15 - Make Over<<]

    World's First LM'ed Aero 15? :p

BEFORE: Bone Stock out of the box.
    * Luckily I took a pic of it with the phone. Can someone please run a Fire Strike Combined Test Loop for 30mins and post a screen shot? Thank you.

AFTER: (Stock Fan Profile!) Fans were not even on MAX...barely audible at only 32dB.
    * Granted I had the AC on today so the ambient temp was a lot cooler than normal at around ~20.5C/~69F, however, what matters is that the ambient was consistent for both runs, which it was. Also, I'm sure the temps will go up a few degrees on both CPU and GPU with long duration's of gaming and with demanding titles like BF1. Nevertheless, I'm pretty happy with the results.

AFTER-AFTER w/ (MAX Fan Profile @ 100%) Fans noise at typical ear level, 48db.

    + HS Mod / Balancing
    + HS Resurfacing

    + Other tweaks

The review will be up soon so stay tuned for that.

    UPDATE:

Guess what? The fans were not even on MAX in the "AFTER," test above!

That was only on the Stock Fan Profile!

It was barely audible at only 32db during that run, yet still managed to hold low temps.

Wait until you see what it does on MAX fans at 100%.

    FS Loop in progress...

I wish to implement this to my Kabylake Aero 14 too . Can I get the link to the live session Aero 15 makeover video ? Or Will I get similar results on my Aero 14 by following your AW 17 LM repasting guide?

@iunlock what are the Power Limit settings, PROCHOT level for the 7700hq in the Aero 15? If I am not wrong, the Aero 14 has it set at 52W and 58W, with a PL2 time of 28sec and a PROCHOT 90c in the latest BIOS (It was 97c before that). The Razer Blade has it set at 45W and 60W, and a PROCHOT of 100c.

It's interesting that you ask that, because see all the blanks in the chart? That's where it is suppose to populate, along with some other info that I had customized for this chart of mine...hmm..

I'll just reset it back to default to see if it shows and then report back.

I've found out that HWINFO doesn't read the values for some reason, I am not experienced enough to be able to troubleshoot it. So I have used TS 8.48 to read the modify those values.

I was just about to ask the current owners if they could verify this.

However, after some digging it does look like the Aero 15 is set at:

    52W and 58W

It really doesn't matter since a properly undervolted 7700HQ will never pass 45w.

Some seriously impressive work you've expressed here with the Aero 15 @iunlock :) Your real time, hands on testing of the laptop is seriously tempting me to bite the bullet on one.

Just a few questions though to tempt me further and to gather a better idea of various things...

How has the real world battery life been like?

Does the Aero 15 come with much supplied software or any bloatware out of the factory and if so, does it tend to hog CPU / RAM resources when running in the background?

Do the fans still spin when the laptop is idling?

By the looks of things the laptop seems to remain pretty solid and stable under full loads and throughout testing, however does the CPU frequency & all cores operate at the full 7700K full ability throughout & constant, despite the heat?

If you've used a Dell XPS 15 9550 / 9560, how does the Aero 15's keyboard compare? Would you say the Aero 15 keyboard is on par or even better?

    Many thanks - Liam.

    Hello Liam and thanks...

I'll surely include all of these details in the review, but real quickly to answer your questions, yes the keyboard IMO is better than the XPS 15 in that they feel full, solid, and with great tolerances. This is definitely not a gimmick keyboard. I like it a lot.

The fans are not audible at all, unless you have ears of a bat. These are the quietest fans I've heard on a laptop.

The Aero 15 does come with a bit of bloat...

I haven't really tested the battery life.

Stress testing the laptop does push the 7700HQ to hit the 60W limit using Prime95 smallFTTs. What do you mean by "properly undervolted"?

Looks to me like the temp throttle point is set for 74c instead of 84c like other thin notebooks have it. Look at the fs loop original score. It's sitting at base clocks pulling about 60w at 74c, but the power draw spike is much higher. After the LM it sits at over 1750MHz, sucking more power. This laptop is designed to kill turbo way early, I want to see how it does in simultaneous stress games like The Division and Crysis 3 etc.

It's always a mystery with locked systems on the behavior, especially when tuning using apps that were never really design for this application. One little thing can cause a personality shift in how these systems react.

Nonetheless, kill turbo or not, this is a 7700HQ/GTX 1060 laptop, which can and does run cooler "in ratio" than other laptops, even above its class.

I've always had my doubts with ODM's fitting in a 1060 into such a small chassis and so far there has yet to be an offering until now that can offer "close to" the whole package.

Just to make sure I'm interpreting the benchmarks correctly, the CPU seems to be able to hold max turbo constantly, while the GPU is throttling to keep itself below the max boost clock somewhat?

No the HQ's won't hold max turbo clock consistently, that's just how it is thanks to Intel gimping this like of processors so that it doesn't affect the sale of their other processors.

In simple terms, "cheap shot and more by Intel... Sleezy business tactics."

The GPU throttle point is a goofy subject with pascal that has varying degrees of speculations as to what when where and why...

One little change and pascal can throw another curve ball... It is a special breed when it comes to its behavior. Not exactly favorable, but we know for sure that pascal likes it cold.

If it throttles to or below base clock to keep the illusion that it's "not overheating" then I see little point in putting the thing there. A 3GB 1060N (1152 cores) would be a bit easier to cool, and likely boost higher enough that the 6GB 1060N will actually be slower. Though if you're buying from a vendor like GentechPC who does free LM applications in this case it's a non-issue, but for certain other machines that don't boost I have some issue there.

Either way, will wait for your full review on this.

They can, and should. If they're not something is functionally wrong with the laptop. Skylake and Kaby Lake have ZERO issues with holding clocks at the base level (unlike Haswell/Broadwell).

Pascal is supposed to function as thus: GPU throttles in increments as it gets hotter. At a hard limit, it'll start throttling a lot more. Lots of these thinner machines seem to throw a certain hard limit and serious throttle a lot lower on the temp scale; 84c is the main case for the machines like GS63/Aero 15/Aero 14/etc. Then that kills turbo for some reason. This isn't how stock pascal should function, this is manufacturers wanting to use tricks to put crap in their machines that it cannot handle.

@iunlock monitor the battery, they still use cheaper Simplo batteries. With 3 gigabyte units I saw the battery health dwindle in mere weeks. Curious if they finally fixed that. Some Aorus users came across the same issues after a while.

From my experimenting on my Aero 14, it seems that BDPROCHOT is activated when the GPU hits 75/76c, however disabling that allow both GPU and CPU to run hotter.

@iunlock do you know if the stock drive came with a recovery partition? I'm asking because I"m looking for the best way to clone the drive onto a new EVO 960 and supposedly if there's a recovery partition Samsung's data migration software won't work.

Awesome work here! One thing I'm wondering is if you were able to get any additional performance from the lower temperatures.

It seems that the average clocks didn't change much in the before and after shots. The main benefits seems to just be more quiet operation and possibly better battery life than any performance increases as throttling still occurs.

Anybody has some informations regarding the wear of the battery from Aorus X3 Plus v6/7 or Aero 14? It's the same battery model that is built into the Aero 15.

EDIT: It seems like the 94.24Wh battery Giagabyte/Aorus is using has severe degrading issues:

They are using a Getac GAG-J40. The exact same model that is used in the Aorus X3 Plus v6/7 and Aero 14.

I was told by Xotic PC that GIGABYTE was holding back on sending out stock to ensure all the tiny bugs are ironed out. Might just have to wait to get a perfected version over a potentially buggy one
