I was thinking (always a bad sign), there's a lot of notebooks out there with webcams in the lids, so my thought was to see if the dumb annoying webcam could just be replaced to fix the microphone compatibility issue. It's USB so connection wouldn't be the problem, only the fit of the camera in the lid.
Then I had a second thought (even worse sign) - can the Conexant audio be replaced as well? Is it socketed or soldered? I would not mind putting a little money and effort into making my 7811 fully compatible with Windows XP, just because all my stuff is all set up to work perfectly with XP.
With Vista, I can't use a lot of my utilities to back up my stuff. I use(d) PC-Relocator to back up my non-portable programs periodically and an instant-backup program to continuously back up my data to a network drive.
The only thing that still works is a manual synchronization tool that I used to use for my portable apps, but now I have to use it for data too, and my non-portable progs aren't backed up at all. So if my machine goes pop, I can't just put another one on my credit card, run three restores and be back in business, I've got to do a bunch of manual program installations.

Audio is probably a no its probably tightly integrated into the board, I'm hoping someone can come up with a fix sooner or later, the G-ways aren't the only laptops with this same audio that requires the same devcon work around to work. The webcam you could probably do something about if you can find one that's more or less the same size. If the mic was on a seperate connection you could even just replace it with a generic USB mic possibly?
Replace the Conexant webcam and sound with ones that support XP?
