    I have searched through Amazon and eBay but I can't find one that fits the Gateway FX battery specifications. The original battery, which I still use, has worn down 50% (measured by HWMonitor) from 86580 mAh to 43648 mAh. Where can I find a reliable battery replacement?

    eBay would be the way to go and what do you mean can't find one on eBay? Where are you looking at I can search and find 3rd party and used OEM gateway batteries. I found my use working OEM gateway for my P68/P78 and they used the same battery so to say you can't find it makes me wonder where are you looking at?

    I'm hesitant to buy a random battery on eBay. I rather read good feedback about the battery being reliable in this forum or somewhere else. Which seller did you buy yours from?

    I am not too sure many have replaced the battery.

    Lots on ebay and they are so cheap too (which might not be a good thing!), but at least you can buy a couple. I doubt these would be original batteries though. What's the harm as the laptops are already well past their sell by date.

    Well then that is why you check with the seller...I bought a few P68/P78 OEM use batteries and they are still working. So one needs to do their homework when looking for batteries...I would advise for gateway not to get 3rd party batteries but a good used OEM gateway battery is the way to go just make sure they have a warranty time line that should it go bad you can get a refund. As anything you need to do your homework as well otherwise go order it through Acer/Gateway and be prepared for a fire in your wallet should you not want eBay use/new OEM gateway battery.

    I'm disappointed by the discussion in this thread. "Check with the seller" and "buy a couple" are not valid at all. A seller would have several other products s/he would sell and get high ratings for! Buying a couple defeats the whole idea of being frugal. I have bought reliable batteries for other laptops and devices but the Gateway FX laptop is difficult because of the different high-end specifications such as a 12+V, 86.5 Wh battery. I really appreciate the condescending lack of links.

    This goes back to my statement. The fact that few have replaced batteries on these. The other issue can be that it has been a while since the purchase of a replacement and inventory can only be lived short term for these too. There are not that many of the systems out there let alone demand for the item. So someone that had one 6 months to a year ago may have dumped their inventory of these. They also could have been drop shipping and it is no longer available.

    Thanks. I guess I'll have to make this laptop my desktop and my Surface Pro 2 my mobile replacement.

    LoL, yeah it pretty much will be hit or miss with the batteries, fortunately they are relatively cheap. The cheapest for my Samsung I've found for a china non oem is $99. I am at 23% wear in under two years too. Fortunately all these are DTR's to me. My nexus 10 is my true ultra mobile consumption.

    Wow...why am I not surprised...by this response. You want us to buy them for you for free right. Your choices are limited for battery purchases especially for older laptops and yet you complain when we tell the options you have is ludicrous when your options are limited to older laptops. If you don't want ebay Gateway OEM batteries then go buy them directly from Acer/Gateway OEM batteries you don't get to makes choices of whom you can really buy for your older laptop batteries form when it is no longer being made.

    Thanks. It seems like it's not worth spending any money on a battery. The Gateway FX is only worth $400-$500 despite its fantastic performance so it would make it very cost inefficient.

    Have you provided a link yet to a legitimate seller? I haven't seen one yet despite your paragraphs of flamebait.

    TBH, for 20 or so I'd myself put it in (you have this capacity already though). As an example;
    Battery for Gateway P 6831FX P 6860FX P 73 P 78 P 78 FX P 7807U FX P 7808U FX | eBay

    Edit;

    Closer to spec, 9 cell

    or for more yet;

    Also HWMonitor is reading the mWh not mAh..........

    I do not think it is so much a complaint other than a semi legitimate reason. Agreed you will not get the resale value back but it counts on usage. Assuming a 5 year usage cycle if you a $65.00 battery would get you at least another year before needing an upgrade. A $1,000.00 system in a year would get a $200.00 depreciation. Now if that new battery gets you 2 years, well you can see the value. You just have to decide how far forward the system will last you.

    I can understand frustration as it would be nice to have some hard data but there are not enough of these in the wild also, being primarily a DTR for most, the replacements done is far and few between.

    Try here.

    Forget OEM but if you do find old new stock, maybe no problems. Inside these things are 18650 lithium cells made by Sony, LG, Samsung and Panasonic. They are sent out at storage voltage around 3.7vdc per cell. I buy many of these NOS pack for around $8 to $12 to harvest the cells for high power LED use. My first Toshiba pack had Sony cells with 2004 date code of 2004. These charge and hold capacity like new and were found sitting around 2 to 2.3VDC.

    The point is that the older stock pack will normally charge and hold capacity, like fresh packs, (if) the packs built in protection (for low voltage) boards will reset after a few tries.

    The above link are for fresh packs and warranted. Remember that new out the box packs from any of the forums are good for 1 (one) year warranty.

    You really should get the 9 cell, not 6 cell battery.

    Agree, but after reading missed posts,the word "frugal" popped up. So, if an existing UPS is in use then I would just use that for desktop use. Wow, the cost of gel cell replacements..I won't go there.

    $90 is not bad if I didn't upgrade my laptop's processor. I would be paying $90 for 2 hours of battery life. I really appreciate the links, hydra, and your recommendations, TANware. The company seems to make certified batteries with a good warranty.
