I just hooked up my Dell 2407 monitor to the laptop via the vga port and noticed that gpu temps were averaging 49c. Without the 2407, the temps are 39-40ish. Also, the annoying fan throttle is non-existent when connected to the monitor! Does connecting an external monitor usually increase gpu temps?

One would assume an increase since the GPU now has to do additional rendering work yes. I have not used more than one monitor on a box which I monitor GPU temps on (I don't game on my work laptop) so I couldn't comment on how much of an increase you would typically see sorry.

idle with the gpu displaying the laptop screen - 41C

idle with the gpu displaying laptop screen and 1920x1080 resolution on 32" TV - 52C.

so i would say yes connecting an external monitor usually increases gpu temps.
