I'm extremely new to Overclocking so in depth advice and info would be greatly appreciated! I know I should be able to get alot more out of my GPU among other things in my laptop that could be tweaked but I do not really know how to go about doing it safely.

Currently I'm using 275.33 Verde driver that was released a few days ago.

Well for overclocking you can use msi afterburner in conjuction with FurMark.
    Download and install both.
Launch MSI afterburner, you will see three sliders.
    Core/shaders, usually linked and memory.
If you want to oc your gpu, you need to increment slowly, lets say 50mhz, the core slider. The shaders should grow accordingly to core.
As for the memory, dont go over 100mhz more on your stock speed.
Eg if youre running mem @ 800mhz, prolly you can push it up to 950, but i thi k 900 is fail proof.

Anyway, back to 50mhz increase on core.
When you modified it, hit apply.
Launch FurMark at default settings and run it for at least 4 minutes.
Keep an eye on gpu temperatures.

If you go over 4 mins with no crash or overheat, raise your clocks 100mhz more and do it over again.

Since youre starting from stock, i guess you can start from 80-100mhz increment on core (shaders linked) and do the 4 mins test.

    Have fun ;)

my 8400 softmodded to 8600m is stable with all games and bench at 652 core and 544(1088 effective)for memory...

No, because those are the clock when it rests at idle.

    Download GPU-Z.

Given the 8600m is inherently faulty to begin with and will fail I'd rather not further that by overclocking tbh.

It is doable, but he needs to OC with good cooling going into and out the system and a change in thermal paste also helps wonders.

Well its a brand new MB cause I ran into heat issues with the old board, so I went online and found a steal on a brand new MB with a better gpu my old one was 256 and I found a board that would fit but had 512 I also purchased the zalman NC2000 to help cooling and have had no issues since.

Ok here is my first attempt, going to check its stability with furmark now

Well my update is that my performance has actually dropped, I'm extremely confused at this point.

The Zalman NC2000 should be great for cooling the dv9000t. I think you will run into no problems at all. Later revised 8400M GS and 8600M GS were a lot more stable than the initial batches made for the earlier models. Just don't get too trigger happy and you will be fine even on a modest OC. I had heavily OC'ed a late-revision 8400M GS and mine is still running strong on AS5 Paste. However as of the last two years it has been retired to stock settings.

That is a good start and it should be stable, however see if you can push the memory higher as for these kind of low-end GPU's, the memory makes for a performance boost than just pushing core clocks.

For some reason if I try to change the GPU settings using Afterburner more than 1 time it drops my performance greatly but if I set it once everything runs great. I ran Bad company 2 for around 5mins @ 600/core and 510/mem but the game froze suddenly and my display driver stopped responding so it then recovered.

Then you might of hit this barrier.

I explained the problem you are having now to this person on this thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/583860-my-gpu-dying.html

Essentially, your GPU failsafed to its Low-3D speeds and the only way to get them back to stock and full OC potential is to reboot. I think based on the drivers and how sudden you are boosting your OC, you might have overstressed the GPU to failsafe.

Nvidia was sued because of their poor implementation of 8x00 series of graphics chips in notebooks; The chips eventually overheated and many burned out. I wouldn't overclock an 8600m gs myself, especially if it's in an older HP laptop.

Yes however later-produced dv9000t's didn't have the problem, especially the A2 revision models. Not all dv2000/6000/9000t's were eligible for the lawsuit. My dv6500t was not eligible as its 8400M GS was already the revised variant.

He said his motherboard was from the ones used in the dv9700t, which had more stable 8600M GS's than the one he originally fried.

ey ey wait one second...try another game...battlfield bad2 hate the overclock, when you have card in oc crash the most of times...try 3dmark06 as a becnhmark...i think would be perfect stable but see the temperature(my on max go in 80...70 with 3 fan on case)...

Yes that is true actually. BC2 does not like OC Software when playing MP. It will hard lock the game 95% of the time within the first 15 minutes.

Try FurMark or OCCT to test stability or run 3DMark06 a few times to test stability.

The original GPU fried about a month after the warranty expired and I was unaware of the lawsuit (normally I research stuff like that :p) but I just had too much going on and needed to get my laptop back up and running asap so I found a newer board with a better GPU and fixed it fast. The original 8600 would literally heat everything up to the point if I were to hold my fingers near the fans it would burn alittle, I'm actually surprised it did not compromise other components when I removed the board it was actually charcoaled a bit near the gpu lol.

Well I'm going to run a few more numbers today and see what works, I will keep everyone posted and appreciate all the info.
