I have a fujitsu s6210 and am having problems with the wifi connection. When Im connected with AC power, it works great, and when I am not, it sucks...the connection slows down even though it tells me it is "excellent"......any ideas?

If you installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, you would have to turn the wifi switch on the back of the laptop off and turn it back to make it connect to assigned a DHCP IP address. But if you haven't installed it, double click on the Intel Proset Wireless icon on the bottom right corner and goto the Adapter tab, under Power settings click Configure, for Power Management select the radio button to Manual and move the slider all the way to the right for Maximum Performance. See if that helps [ :)]

Yeah you do. I have it installed on my S6210, and it drives me insane. But at the same time, I don't want to deal with reformating my laptop since I done it nearly 4times within the week. But with SP2, security is enhanced, certain features are moved around like the device manager menu, and it also incorperates this wannabe Zone Alarm which is very annoying when trying to play online games, and has a built in pop up blocker.

I seem to be one of the few with no ill effects from SP2. My wireless works as well as it did before.

My connection actually improved after XP SP2. Finds and connects much faster than before.

I think the problem would definitely be fixed by following what the first response to this thread suggested. I found this out on myself too, but it took quite a effort to try all different things before I hit the right one.

How does one get Intel's PROSet to do anything?

I have a new S6210, WiFi seems to be working fine with the tools built into XP, but I've got that Intel PROSet program running all the time, with it's icon in the status area of the taskbar, and it doesn't seem to do anything. It doesn't display any network components, and except for Help and Exit all menu options are grayed-out.

My guess is I have to tell Windows not to manage WiFi, and I tried that, but I must have missed something.

So, is there any reason to use PROSet over what's built-into XP, and if so, how do I get it to work?

(This is making me feel really stupid!)

    Thanks,

    /Andy

    Never mind...

I searched around this forum and found that after installing SP2 the Intel software needs to be reinstalled. Downloaded it from Fujitsu's web site, installed it, and I'm good to go.

(The main reason I wanted to use the Intel software is so I can turn off SSID broadcasts on my wireless router. With Windows managing wireless that would cause my connection to drop, but so far it's working fine with the Intel.)

    1. updated firmware on router
    2. gone through the intel proset wireless settings to maximum power
    3. tried both windows managing and intel managing the connection

    Symptoms:

Returning from standby the dsl would be one tenth of what the speed should be. Doing a "repair" (which cycles the wifi off/on) brings it back up to speed.

So I went through MSCONFIG and removed all non essential stuff thinking that one of them wasn't going on standby well. Didn't fix it.

    Question:

Do I need to "uninstall" the Intel 2200BG and then "install" it or can I just "install" over what's there already?

[edit] I couldn't wait so I tried uninstalling from device manager, but rebooting automajically reinstalled, so I uninstalled again and then installed from the cd. Didn't take as long as I thought it would. I think it just compared what was on the harddrive with what was on the driver CD. So anyway, I'm up to "wireless connection 3" and am fixin to do some return from standby tests, although several of the speed test sites have locked me out already from over use.

[2nd edit] Didn't think that I could have checked in add/remove programs to uninstall it instead of device manager. Oh well, that will be something else to try if it happens again.

[3rd edit] Ok so I went through add/remove programs and that really uninstalled the intel pro stuff. Installed from the driver cd and just let it do it's thing and didn't monkey with any settings. Will try it again. Only other thing I can think of would be to get a different access point/router. In the meantime I would have to hit "repair" each time the pipe narrows by 90% to get it back up to full speed.

is there some power setting somewhere on intel's software that allows the power management to slow down the card when on battery or similar situation. I have an intel wired on my other laptop and there is a setting that allows it to go down to 10mbits when on battery. So maybe there is such a thing for wireless intels and that is your problem!

dig around in the software, nothing to lose [ :p]!

Believe I'm ready to put a period on this thread. The solution for the dropping, slowdowns was to disable all the proprietary stuff ("4X mode" and "22mbps link rate") on my aging "B" dlink router. All the finagling on the 6231 had nothing to do with the problem.
