Congrats on a great choice. Don't see why you'd have any probs on the XP pro upgrade. Think you'll really love your lappy when she arrives, a truly great machine. Keep us posted.

I upgraded to XP pro myself. no probs. All you need to do is use the driver and applications CD that comes with the N6 to get your hardware to run (VGA, Network, sound...) and install the application (that ship with it) that you want, I installed the hot key software and the DVD player software only.

enjoy your new lappy. I sure am! [ :)]

Qwester, did you try using "Driver Cleaner" before you installed the Omega's? Sometimes the ATI uninstaller leaves some remnants behind. If you don't have that program, you can download it free from http://www.drivercleaner.net/ . Hope this helps.[ :D]
quote:

No luck [ :(] same problem ati2dvag.dll goes into an endless loop and windows hangs on startup with a blue screen of death!

Try them. I am starting to feel I have some problem. Because I was having the same results before I formated a few weeks ago. So it cannot be a software issue with me if LetsRok got it working.

BTW if your try it have windows restorer on to be able to go back to working state in case installation fails. I had my restorer switched off and I had to do all the uninstalling of omega and then cleaning after them thru safe mode! THen I was able to boot to windows and reinstall fujitsu drivers.

If you do try. Let me know what happens with you. I am starting to lose hope with my N6!

Tried ATI-NGO drivers based on catalyst 5.4 and they worked. It seems I have some issue somewhere with the current Omega's. I'll give Omega another try once they release their drivers based on 5.4 catalyst (current ones are based on the 5.2).

I have no time to try NFS now. I still have a presentation to prepare for tomorrow noon on Robotic Prostheses [ :(]. I cannot believe I haven't started yet! Damn I am too lazy these days, I blame spring and the beautiful weather outside [ ;)].

Good luck elanchiwaya with your try, hope you have better luck with Omega than me [ :)]!

Thought I would add my 2 cents..

I got mine last week, and immediately installed XPMC2K5 on it (Same as XP pro -- with a few bundlled apps). Went like a dream. Once OS was installed, popped the driver CD in, select3d everything and was a happy camper.

Glad you got the drivers to work Qwester. I don't know why your having problems with the Omega's [?] Just one of the little quirks we have to deal with from time to time. I have tried NFS, and the Omegas work really well for me. Just glad you found an alternative [ ;)].

ATI-NGO work fine. I can now switch on the reflections in NFS with no problems. The game looks so much better that way.
I was too optimistic and maxed out all the settings, but it was waaaaaay too slow. But when everything is set to medium or a bit more it is very smooth.

I gave the game a spin around the track and everything seems stable with no problems.

I am now trying to find my warcraft 3 - frozen throne cds to install and play. I never tried warcraft 3 on this machine, but I am sure it will run smoothly. I tried WOW but totally didn't like the game, BTW that also ran smoothly, so did UT2004. So there is quite a bunch of games that this lappy can handle!

The N6010, although not the greatest gaming laptop, still does a fine job when I have some free time to waste. [ :D]

glad to be the forum's guinea pig [ :D].

Ok here is what's new on the driver issue. I retried the Omega's, and no matter what I couldn't make them work. I wasn't too thrilled with the NGO drivers because they force you to use the "ATI Tool" application that loads into the task bar to do any changes to the drivers (all the tabs in display settings > advanced, are not there with the NGO).

So I decided to modify the ATI ORIGINAL catalyst drivers (the ones that usually don't work for notebook chips) to make them work for the 9700 Mobility. Turns out to be a very simple task. Just get this little application from http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/ and use it to modify the drivers (instructions on site) and then install them.

So now I have ATI's catalyst 5.4, the only thing is that I am missing the few extra tweaks that Omega or NGO provide, and no overclock utility. Not that I wanted to overclock in the first place. I guess I will stick with this configuration for now until the Omegas based on catalyst 5.4 are released, and then give those a try.

So there are quite a bit of options for the N6010 when it comes to VGA drivers. Pick and choose.

Glad to see they're working for you qwester. I used the omega drivers on my Dell i8600 without any problems all last year.(ati 9600) I've tried the mod tool on the regular ati drivers but they seemed to be less stable than omega's.
quote:

Hi,
I'm considering purchasing this model today. I usually research for months before I buy anything (major purchases) in the world. I don't know anything ! Nothing about Fujitsu except I was so impressed by this model! That's it! I have not checked out one review or anything.

I will not be reformatting (personal reasons....wish I could but not now)! In this thread people are talking alot about adding XP Pro am I correct ? Right now on their website an upgraded Windows XP Home TV Media/tuner is included (I can't remember exactly what it is) free a ($150 value they say). I'm not interested in XP Pro.

I'm reading things like Omega's and things I have no clue about. I really don't have any clue about anything you are all talking about.

If I purchased this system is it so different than other manufacturers that I can't use it right out of the box??? (Don't worry about a reformat....just forget about that)! I have had many many Dells ( at least 6 Desktops /notebooks) and a HP notebok that's it! From this thread It's made me a nervous wreck and I think and hope It's due to something that would not be relevent to me unless I was reformatting or upgrading to XP Pro...is this correct ???

Qwester,I'm going to need your help I think! Just by fluke I decided I would check out the forum before we spoke ,hopefully tonight! This was the first thread that sounded right to go to...but I don't think so for me!

Everyone I'm all confused because I have no knowledge about this model/manufacturer except looking at their website and saw something that impressed me and I think I want! Like I said ,I usually research to an extreme but I don't know a thing about Fujitsu (I never even thought about it or ever paid any attention to the name until I saw it some where else and clicked on their website)!

Someone Please tell me if I can use it out of the box. Plain and simple (bloatware and all)!

Absolutely tell me in plain english anything you want to add! I need to know all your thoughts, opinions and how on a scale of 1-10 you would rate it overall. Pros/cons that people have found,etc.... **Please if you can, compare it to the Dell 9300!!!**

Thank you in advance! You have no idea what it would mean to me,

Heart[ :)][ :)][ :)]

Karma,It'll Get You!

P.S After the Dell 9300 ,my concerns would be the fans. I can leave the Dell 9300 on for 15 hours never hearing the fan once and only a tiny tiny warmth under the keypad (It is on a stand to let air flow). I had one that was defective and one that is not defective!

When/if you purchase the N6010 let me know how it is compared to your dell. ironically the 9300 (which you already have) and the N6010 (which you plan to get) are the two that i am planning to get soon but having a hard time to pick.

btw, ive done a lot of research on the 2 but im no expert in laptops. but heres what ive found for the N6010:
Pros:
great build, sturdy, unbelieveable cyrstal view screen, good full keyboard w/seperate number pad, very fast
Cons:
fans are loud and never turn off, heavy (about 10lbs), very low battery life (1 1/2 hrs - 2hrs)

This is all i can think of right know from what ive seen on other reviews. Hopefully this helps.[ :)]

Heart, you wont have any problems whatsoever using it right from the box. And there really is no comparison to Dell imho. I had the Dell i8600 and to be honest Fujitsu just makes a higher quality product. Not only does it look soooo much better, but the the build quality is second to none. And the screen will knock your socks off. It's just a beauty. As far as the "Omega's" those are just modified video drivers aimed at enthusiasts looking to improve gaming.
quote:

Heart,

I am not sure what you're referring to with:
"Right now on their website an upgraded Windows XP Home TV Media/tuner is included ..."
Here is what I think might clarify the issue. If you get a TV-Tuner with the N6010 you will get a software called "Instant MyMedia". You can use this in windows to watch TV and DVDs. AND you can simply not bother and boot into windows, if you just want to watch TV/DVD. It's a sort of mini operating system just for watching TV/DVD.

It seems you are concerned about the fans. Yes the N6010 has a pair of fans that are always on (not at max speed) to keep it cool, and they do a fine job (no heat in the palm rest or keyboad areas). They are pretty audible if you're in a room with no sources of noise like TV or Radio. But this is to be expected from any Pentium 4 processor since they are capable of producing three times more heat than a centrino (pentium-m) processor. The fans are always the thing that I would warn about when recommending any P4 of any brand, at least the fujitsu stays cool, other brands (such as HP) have their fans on all the time (three of them) and the whole keyboard area still gets hot.

Now that the cons are out of the way. The pros:
-The screen has to be the best thing about any fujitsu model. It is clear and bright and even visible outdoors. Usually indoors you wouldn't run it at maximum brightness because it could become a bit straining on the eyes. For indoors I have mine at 5/8 brightness.

-The keyboard. I love the full keyboard. It is sooo comfortable to type on and has absolutely no flex. Some users here know how picky I am about keyboards, so me recommending a keyboard is a rare thing [ :p].

-Speakers are very good for a laptop. I actually use them to listen to online radio and watch DVDs. They definitely wont be better than a good brand set of external speakers, but for a laptop they are really good.

And one final thing. You said you have your laptop on a stand. I am not sure if you mean all the time. Because with the N6010 you cannot use it on your lap or a soft surface such as a bed. Why? Because the fan intakes are on the bottom, and you shouldn't block them. + Use on a lap will be very annoying since it weighs a bit over 10 pounds!

I hope I covered everything, if you have more questions just ask.

Here is a link to a review of the N6010 posted on this site: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2221

[EDIT]: And there is absolutely no need to format out of the box like with Dell. The only software that will be there and you "might" not need is quicken. Other than that it's pretty clean. The only extra software Fujitsu have installed are the ones for the keyboard hot keys and the media keys on top (none of which appears in the system tray). Other software installed: Norton 2004, Acrobat 6, and microsoft works. That's it!
In case you ever need to format. The computer ships with a DVD that has the image of your installation and a CD that can install all your drivers in one click, and any other application that it shipped with originally.

[ONE MORE EDIT]: There will be a Pentium-M model of the N6000 series released sometime in June (release date not guaranteed). For info you can see the sticky we have on the first page of the Fujitsu forum.

Let me first conclude my driver issue topic.
So now I have been using the Omegas based on Catalyst 5.4 for quite some days. Tried NSF U2, Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne, & UT2004. All run flawlessly.

Yesterday I also gave Futermark 2003 a try and I saw no driver issues. Score was 3472 (no overclocking or any form of optimization). And from comparing the score with some other scores on their ORB it seems pretty resonable. If someone is still using the original drivers and wants to give FM2003 a try to see if there is any improvement that would be great. I cannot remember what my score was (I lost the paper I wrote it on [)])

elanchiwaya, how happy are you with your new toy? [ ;)]

elanchiwaya, what you experienced was normal. You should have just restarted. The drivers test what settings are appropriate for your card and changes them. Things like fast right, agp speed, ...

Anyway glad to hear things are working for you.

Heart,
Just wanted to let you know that most of the Fujitsu owners here ordered from www.portableone.com they have exceptionally excellent customer service (they are an authorized dealer). + they offer a free Hard disk upgrade. OR you can simply not take the free upgrade and get -$100 off the price (that's what I did).
You can just check around the forum and see for your self the amount of satisfied customers.

Hi,
I must have forgot to subscribe to the topic. I didn't know you that several responded with all the information I expected to hear. One of the reasons this model grabbed my attention was that it seemed to not have all the added "bloatware" until I saw one comment. It seemed to be so plain and not full of basically anything 9the bloatware). I would have expected it to weigh at least 10 pounds which doesn't matter to me. I did expect the fans would be on most of the time from all the information. I knew that already but hoped someone would tell me even still that they ran somewhat quieter.

My comment about the free upgrade was that there was something but "I" did not remember what it was specifically (qwester) to anyone that thought I was saying It's a free TV Tuner. I haven't even looked again.

Although I couldn't see it at a store in person. The picture gallery was extreme somewhat and the specs all impressed me . The "one" exception being the processor/fans! I loved everything I read and saw on their website but I still didn't even look anywhere else yet! I've heard several of your opinions and it still sound great! I also still love the Dell 9300. I don't think I cold compae them after what I read on this forum or the website. Meaning I can't say one is better than the other but I wouldn't want to give up the Dell yet! I think I need both!

Thank you!

Heart [ :)]
