I have been using Sony's PCG-V505GP for around 4 years. The machine is starting to have "asthma", and "coughs" quite noisily every now & then. Reckon that it's gonna die soon, I'm starting to do some research to look for a replacement in the less-than-3-lbs range with optical drive & wifi.

Appreciate some general advice on Fujitsu's laptops.
What do you think about them?
What are their strengths & weaknesses?
    Who are their competitors?
How do they compare with Asus' & Sony's laptops?

    1) They're very good, sturdy laptops; some of the best in the market at the moment.
    2) Screen is definitely their strongest point; build quality second, and looks third. They are a bit on the expensive side, though.
    3) They're sort of half business-class... so IBM/Lenovo, Asus, Sony and LG would be their direct competitors I guess. There are probably more, though.
    4) They are probably better than Sony notebooks overall... cheaper than Sony in most cases and better built. Quite even with Asus Ensemble notebooks...

Dig into the forums more and you can see what people think about Fujitsu, most love them. I've been with them for 3+ years and haven't found anything better for my needs.

When I was shopping for a nice ultralight notebook Fujitsu was always at the top of my list but I went with an IBM X40 because I had the chance to use a friend's X40 but never had the chance to tryout a Fujitsu. I was considering the S6230 or S6240. I love the X40 but now that I'm in school I've seen some people with Fujitsus and the screens on them look amazing compared to my IBM. I origonally thought I'd prefer the unglossy matte finish of the IBM screen to the glossy high contrast finish on the Fujitsus but I think I've changed my mind now that I've seen people use them. I really like the S6240 and the P7010, P7020. I'd especially like to try out the keyboard on the Pseries and see if its too small for me or not, Its looks about the same as my X40's keyboard. If i had the chance to try out a fujitsu I may of chosen it over IBM. As for other brands, they're all shi_t. If your goinna be carrying your notebook with you all day its definetly worth paying more for a quality brand like Fujitsu or IBM, everything else is a joke by comparison. If you just need a notebook to sit on a desk or table, then I can see the justification for buying a dell or toshiba.

See my comments about the Portableone UX in the Portableone forum (a modified Asus with a superior screen among other modifications)- it is a 3.4 pound ultraportable, 12.1" screen and I am VERY impressed with it. As far as I am concerned, it beats the S7000 series hands down!

Fujitsu has been around in the business for awhile... making laptops, servers, computer parts such motherboards and hard drives. I don't consider them mainstream since they mostly cater to the business crowd (like IBM). I heard that they have a very good reputation, so I decided to dive in and got a Lifebook P7010.

Fujitsu thin and lights are known for their weight, flexible storage (modular bay) options, and excellent battery life. Their screens are also fabulous, and the screens on the desktop replacement models are simply breathtaking. As for build quality, it's very good, but not up to IBM standards. Make no mistake, Fujitsu's laptops are made in Japan (not in China, the Phillipines, or Taiwan). Tech support is also helpful and knowledgeable. On top of that, if you bought a Fujitsu, you get a global warranty.

Competitors are mostly those manufacturers who cater business crowds (IBM, Sony, HP, Toshiba, etc...)

I can't speak for ASUS laptops with the exception that they have some pretty attractive models that offers better bang for the buck. However, they are made in Taiwan, so I don't know if the quality control there is on par with Japan. I bought a Sony VAIO FS550 before settling on my Fujitsu and all I can say is Sony has got one of the worst support out there. In addition, the VAIO I bought was made in China and although the LCD was very bright and fairly vibrant, the backlight went out in about 3 days after I bought it.

Some flaws with the Fujitsu: build quality not on par with IBM, a little bit on the expensive side (but not as expensive as the Sony), some competitors offer better performance : price ratio (in other words, higher clock speed processors and more RAM).... that's all I can think of right now.

Glad I went with the Fujitsu.
