A tilit is fine, jarring it by running with it could be very bad for the hard drive.

Do NOT carry around your notebook when the power is ON. This is one of the primary reason of hard drive failure. Put it on standby/hibernate/turn it off when you are going to carry it. As far as operating the notebook on a slight tilt, that would be fine.

Is it then not OK to move it gently across a room ?
I am pleased I asked this question now
At work I use a Panasonic Laptop but it is made for
chucking around it is a HARDBOOK

another Question is about Physicly turning E-LAN on
it must be able to do this automaticly as when it comes out of hibernation it turns it on itself

I have an Averatec 3250 that is a year and a half old. The hard drive is garbage. It has sounded like it was about to die from day one, makes thermal calibration noises that sound like death incarnate-- sometimes, frequently making three in a row (but not with predictable timing). The machine being my smoking buddy (I only smoke outside, but I do smoke a lot!), I have carried it around both inside and out while running almost constantly since I got it, used it upside down, holding the thing with one hand in the air, etc., because I was expecting the drive to die anyway. It hasn't. It's working great, on the same install of XP Pro that I put on there two days after purchase.

I used to think that this was a bad idea in principle, too. But from this, I conclude that the main risk in carrying your laptop around when open is banging your screen into a door frame... which happens a lot, I'll admit.
