I've gone through testing three sonoma notebooks in the past two months and they run too hot and more importantly too LOUD for me (tecra M3, nc6230, but the most dissapointing is to see that the venerable thinkpad T43 didn't do better).
Now, i know the S7010 had a very good reputation regarding silence and cool. How did that keep up in the S7020? I kind of lost faith in sonoma notebooks. Should i still get the S7020? Has it retained ENOUGH of it's cool and quietness? Or is it as hot as any sonoma out there? The slight performance edge don't really matter to me that much, silence is really the decisive factor here since i study with my laptop running and i can't concentrate on a mechanical whir.

The S7020 is very quiet- I actually was surprised at how quiet it is when I was setting it up. Unless you are using the optical drive (which always generates some noise) the machine is almost silent, even when the fan does come on, it is barely perceptable. There is some warmth on the bottom and on the wrist area over the hard drive, but it does not get hot and remains comfortable for extended use.

Great. And how is the heat? Do you have figures? I'm looking for something that runs in the 40C-45C casually. My tecra M3 right now is always at 50C, no matter what i do.

As well, if you're a semi-gamer the S7020 obviously has a different and updated graphics board, 128mb instead of 64mb. Additionally, if you like to play movies/games on TV, the S7020 has a S-Video out that the S7010 does not have.

Yeah, sure gaming and all is important but really, heat and noise for me weights more in the balance. So the performance must really be something to compensate if there's an increase in heat and noise.

I have just bought S7010D. In my opinion the heat is low but the fan and noise are much too high.

The fan is on whenewer the CPU usage increases for a few seconds. Even when speedstep is set to minimum. The fun turns on for example when you scroll PDF document for a while.

I think is a bad disign since in S6010 in auto speedstep it was almost impossible to turn the fan on. It turned only after a good while of 100% CPU usage. Its probably because of the light weight of the unit. The 14" S7010 has the same weight as 13" s6010.

Other opinions on S7010 on my other posts (matrix , keyboard) If noise and fan is the case I would not buy it.

Currently, I work for an affiliate of Fujitsu, and we get to use S7010 1.73Ghz notebooks as our computers.

On battery, the fan RARELY comes on and I run some heavy dute applications.

On A/C, the fan will come on, it will stay pretty much on low speed for the whole day.

When you compare to the initial start up fan test, I've never encounter the computer reaching the highest speed possible.

I have a Compaq 2145, which runs on Athlon 2400+, I know it's comparing apples with oranges. But the idea is, my own Compaq's series are notorious for loud fans, and it's annoying. The S7010 is pretty QUIET, when you compare it to other notebooks on the market. Comparing it to other Fujitsus is a different ball game.
