What's with the lazy typing? As for a price drop, I don't see it dropping until the new S's are announced in March.

Any guess as to how much more the new Sonoma S series will cost in the refresh? Will it be a huge jump in price? or a small one?

Looks like the wait will be until April (for model availability). Or that is the best guest from P1.

But then it's only 8 months away from Yonah. haha. I don't know if I should say slow down or hurry up.

quote:
Looks like the wait will be until April

Not sure I can wait that long. I started my search last october, when the news was "don't buy now, dothan is due any day now". Then with all the relatives coming by during the holiday season, I didn't want to risk one of them monkeying with it and breaking it, so I waited till the first of the year, when the talk started about alviso and sonoma S6xxx series in march. I thought I could make it to march 1st, but if we are talking april then I don't know.

I'm not a student, but a light weight notebook with a long lasting battery comes in handy. For example, last week I reported for jury duty. They left us in the hallway for 6 hours over two days. I could have watched a couple movies. Then yesterday went to HR Block to get taxes done. Didn't make an appointment so I expected to wait. Brought my 6.1 lb toshiba and at once started looking for a power outlet. The wait was not long, but I like to have the notebook running during the tax prep interview process cause they usually ask for some info I wasn't prepared for.

So I might splurge and get the 6231 as I'm not sure these little incremental updates are worth waiting for. Remember back in the original pentium days? They came out with MMX and all of a sudden you had to have a pentium mmx or you were out of date. Did anyone notice any improvement or was it all advertising bs.

I know the feeling. I'm tinking of just picking up the current s6231 then buying the Yonah version when that comes out. But, if we are only a week away from the refresh announcement, I'm going to atleast wait and see if the new model is going to sound much nicer or if it's just a s6231 with a sonama chip.

I read somewhere about a sonoma shortage. Hopefully fujitsu bought it's stock already. So february is winding down, and now we have to wait for april? (sigh, 31 days in march)

Well if you are in Canada (and want to buy from a Canadian retailer) you will have to wait until early summer. That was the response I got from Fujitsu Canada.

What happened to the refresh announcement? It is now officially "MARCH" and I'm needing a new computer more and more as each day passes (or, rather, I'm needing to free up my current notebook for testing programs which I don't want to install/uninstall on main machines). I'm ok with waiting for another month, but not much longer.

I'm can wait about 2 more weeks. Then, I'll buy the current s6231 model. (which means this verion, but stranger this have happened in a 2 week time frame)

Then wait about 1.5 years and pick up the Yonah version.

P1 told me April, so I'm guessing that will be US availability. Fujitsu Canada told me early summer, so that will probably be Canadian availability.

As for why wait two weeks and not just two more? There needs to be a cut off date for me somewhere. And once two weeks passes I've got my eyes set on Yonah, so the the current s6231 is good for me.

April 1st or April 30th? And I have yet to read a review saying the Alviso is worth the wait. An additional feature like built-in bluetooth would be worth waiting for imho.

drw, for most users you are right, Sonoma/Alviso brings little to the table. But power users will appreciate improvements wherever they can find them. A few percent here and there add up.

I'm eagerly awaiting the refresh myself.

I'll buy the new version if they can bring these things in at about the same price point (in order):
    1) greater screen resolution
    2) 512MB RAM
    3) 5400rpm drive
    4) longer battery life
    5) slightly lighter weight

Otherwise, I'll be scanning the web (newegg) for fire sales on the S6231. [ :)]

I'm quite certain battery life won't increase unless they stick in a larger battery. Everything I have read (and pointed out here) says the Sonoma needs more power.

edit: One final question, I never thought of asking until now. With the new Sonoma, there is this 90% improvement in graphics. But what does that translate to in a real world sense? Will I see a difference, if I only use Office, photoshop, adobe, and mediaplayer?

From what I have read, the only big improvement is in the graphics, however, if for my uses I won't be able to tell the difference then I'll just stop waiting. (Then buy dual core later).

    Thanks.

Graphics have no affect on office work and word processing. Maybe visualizations in media player will look better, but I am not even sure about that. Basicly the GMA 900 is still no good for gaming anyway! But at least if you hook up an external monitor you can now go to higher resolutions. Well and DX9 support in case you needed it, but I cannot imagine how you will with the applications that you described! If I were you i'd actually wait to see if the current models drop in price, that's about the only reason that I can see for waiting.
