I am looking to replace the hard drive in my P770 with a Solid State Disk (SSD). It will likely be a 480Gb Intel 520 or a 512Gb Samsung or Crucial. Current hard drive is a 750Gb WD Black.

I am going this to make the laptop more shock resistant, and to reduce power usage to extend the battery life.

The loss of 250Gb will be felt - a second SSD may be installed in the future. The laptop is used for DJing and video and photo editing. The optical drive was replaced with a bay for a second hard drive and I have had two 750Gb drives installed and running, so putting a second SSD in will be easy.

Anyone have any advice or experiences with this type of upgrade?

Current SSDs are all SATAIII, while the controllers in the P770 are SATAI 150Mbps. Might this cause any issues?

    Thanks in advance!

    No responses?

I have put a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 480Gb SSD into my P770.

There appear to be issues with my XP and Win7 installs. These are recent issues, and they exist on the old drive, so they are not related to the upgrade. They did make the transfer from the old drive to the SSD take a lot longer, though.

The P770 had no problems with the SSD. Boot time is much reduced, starting applications is much faster, and the Windows Experience Index has gone from 5.7 for the WD Black 750Gb drive to 7.4 for the Mushkin SSD. Not too shabby for a SATA 1 interface!

Booting into XP encounters no issues, and starting DJ Power is much much quicker.

I am not sure yet if the SSD will make much difference in battery life. The WD Black series are very power efficient, and not all SSDs draw as little power as one might expect.

I think the only way to resolve my issues are reinstalls of XP and Windows 7. That is likely overdue, anyways.

Now, I need to find a second SSD with 360GB - 512Gb capacity. The reduction of capacity from 750Gb to 480Gb has forced the removal of some of the things usually stored on the laptop. Maybe Black Friday will bring some attractive prices.....
