My friend's laptop won't start with its Win XP Home Edition OS. It seems that this happened after many times that the laptop just hang and won't shut down using the software and he had to shut it down hard by pressing the power on/off button for more than 2 seconds.

I tried 'recusing' it using its recovery disk (WIN XP SP2) but it just hang and won't continue with the recovery. I tried using the HP recovery disk (Win XP SP1) and it can't setup or repair OS because it can't detect the HD. I tried looking at the bios setup and the 60GB HD is there and can be detected. I tried cleaning the contact points of the HD but the problem is still there. Is the HD totally dead and needs to be replaced or it's just corrupted? If it's just corrupted, can I still rescue it? Please help.
