i decided to go learn more about ram before i bought some more for my N6210 and am planning on getting a Crucial 1gb stick or a corsair value select 1gb stick.

I did some research on CAS latency and learned that basically the lower the better, all the ram i can find for DDR2 SODIMM 533 (PC4200) has a CAS of 4, and wondered why they don't have lower cas latencys than the DDR 400 memory?????

is this correct or am i looking at it in the wrong way?

have they just not made it yet?

DDR2 has higher CAS than DDR. This is something to do with the design. And is the main reason why although DDR2 runs faster doesn't actually offer much of an increase in bandwidth over DDR

So your not mistaken. And I am not sure if you can expect lower CAS DDR2 to come out!

but basically i wouldn't notice much of a difference anyway? i know that a lower CAS is better for overclocking gf cards but i am not planning to do that so other than that is it pretty minute?

Well look at it this way, you don't have an option :D If you want to upgrade to more RAM you'll have to work with what's available.

I guess the ones that you have in your N6210 now are also of such latency. You can check with CPU-Z. But lower CAS do allow for higher bandwidth, but yes the difference won't appear except in extreme memory intensive operations.

And 533MHz DDR2, still offer more bandwidth than the fastest DDRs even with the CAS disadvantage, so it's the best of the 2 worlds for now.

oh ok i understand then, so probably the designers of ddr2 figured that it was fast enough that the cas latency could be higher, (atleast with 533mhz)?

that makes sense then, and maybe if they do make lower cas ddr2 ram in the future i can upgrade again but i don't think i'll wait i'll just get some now.

oh yeah, qwester tell Nandor that he owes me $40, that sneaky jerk :)

Actually they cannot go to lower latencies at the moment. something to do with design and manufacturing process making impossible without running into stability issues. More speed is always welcome after all :)

You're still after Nandor :p. Maybe you need to list him on the WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE LIST

i'm sitting outside his house right now :D :p

he better find a really cool tech hint or something because i actually had to put in some effort to find the answer to that.
