I chose the 5020 because it had a built in optical drive, built in SD/CF/MS card reader, small size, long battery life, Fujitsu quality, WiFi G and a cheap 3 year warranty. There are other reasons as well, but the models you listed aren't really in the same class as the 5020. To make a fair comparison, look at the Sony TR2 and the Panasonic W2.

the R40 because I wouldn't want a sub sized notebook. You need to decide what class of notebook you want first though, it's all about your lifestyle and personal tastes.

I'd get a p5020 because its smaller than the r40 and it has a better resolution.

    im a resolution whore

X40 if I had the money, in which case I'll get the slab, more ram, and more hd space. 12 inch screen would be a reason as well alongside a nearly full size keyboard and ibm great notebook construction.

P5020 if i wanted the most bang for my buck. i dont think you can find a better deal with all the stuff it comes with and at 3.8 pounds.

tr2 if i wanted a laptop with style and a big pocketbook. and the screen is simply lovely btw. had to see it in person in order to understand how cool xbrite is.

w2 if i wanted a 12 inch screen, thats 2.8 pounds with an integrated drive, and a simply unique laptop. great touchpad.

    i would have kept the x31 i demo'd if i werent for:

    1. a 16meg video card (not enough juice for acad, pshop, rhino)
    2. having to decide when to take along the 'slice'
    3. paying a premium for durablity and ergonomics.

id say this, ibm got it right, the 12" screen gets you a VERY comfortable keyboard, and the keys / mouse are the BEST in terms of responsiveness and accuracy. it was hard to give it up. if it had 64meg dedicated to video i would have bought one even given the other reasons for not liking it. oh, and a light at the top of the screen that illuminates the keyboard... very nice.
