I just purchased a Lifebook N 6460 for my wife. She insisted it be converted from Vista to XP.

First I followed the excellent guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=111960
(Which is how I found this forum) and I created a slipstreamed XP disk with the Intel mobile Sata drivers.

Once XP was up I got the driver downloads from the Fujitsu support site for XP. http://support.fujitsupc.com/CS/Portal/supporthome.do

First problem, error loading the ATI Catalyst Control Center on boot up. Even after making sure .NET was patched and up to date. The problem was actually that DirectX 9c was not up to date. A trip to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en
and downloading and running the Directx web setup fixes that. I re-installed the video drivers from the Fujitsu support site just to be sure.

Next problem was that I had no audio, even after install the Realtek HD Audio drivers. There where also 3 yellow (!) marks on the system-driver page. I struggled with this one for a while, wearing out my gooogle-fu and getting frustrated with all the fake-out driver pages, that link you back to the original manufacturers page, after submitting you to loads of advertising.

The solution was actually quite simple.

Insert the disk labeled "Drivers and Applications Restore Disc". Even though it is marked "Vista". Cancel the auto-install. Go to your devices with the (!) and right click. Select update driver, let it search the internet, it will also search your cd-rom. Drivers for each of the missing devices are for the HD-audio bus and will be pulled from the DVD.

I ran the Realtek HD audio driver install from Fujitsu again, just to be sure.
Machine rebooted and played the sweet ding of the windows shut-down. Oh joy !

Having played with the machine for a couple of days now.

Love the screen. I thought I would not like the glossy screen but it is rich and vibrant.

Played Everquest and WoW for 6 hours on it yesterday and was shocked at how stable, fast and cool it ran. So games and graphics stuffs work very well with it.

Love, love, love (!) the full size keyboard. Great feeling keys with good travel and a numeric keypad. Trackpad is good, the finger scanner/ scroll wheel is a little odd but it works.

Speakers are a little tinny but still produce an adequate sound.

Overall it seems like it will be a more than adequate desktop replacement for the wife.
