    Hi NotebookReview.com fellows,

I own the S2110 and I'm going to order a Hitachi hard drive from newegg.com.
I was planning to order the HITACHI Travelstar 5K100 60GB 2.5" Notebook Hard Drive - OEM, but then noticed that it said ATA-6. All the Fujitsu hard drives have Serial ATA150.
The question is now if he Hitachi hard drive with ATA-6 will work fine with my Fujitsu S2110?

Thanks for helping me out here.

I dont think this is true. While some of their newer models have SATA, the S2110 is not...it has an IDE interface for the hard drive.

S2110 uses a parallel ata drive NOT serial.

Some of the models use serial but NOT all. example S7000, N3510/3, E8000...

So what does that mean...can I use the ATA-6 hard drives?

    Thank you

Yes- ATA-6 is UltraATA/100, which will work fine.

    SATA is ATA-7. ;)

7k100 is the newer line which was just released. Supposedly the newer line should be a bit faster, but I never saw any benchmarks. And probably runs slightly cooler. Just a matter of advancements in technology, nothing major.

But I guess if the price difference is negligible, it's better to go with new technology! 7K60 has been around for quite a LONG time.

Thanks for what. But if the technology is better and more actual, why are the 7K100 Hitachi hard drives cheaper than their 7K60 equivalents (newegg.com)?

The older technology costs more becuase they are harder to get...uneducated buyers know that the 7K60 is a good drive, and will end up paying more for it?!

Possibly the same reason why 266mhz ram costs more than 400mhz ram...no one makes the 266 anymore, so it costs more, even though the 400 is completely reverse compatable....people want 266.

So then I should just go ahead and buy the 7K100 devices....I suppose?

    Alright...appreciate your help...

Sorry to steal the thread, but I'm planning to purchase a s2110 and since alexander had this topic up, I figure I should also ask some questions too. My plan thus far is to purchase the 7k100 through newegg and just buy the s2110 through portableone with the "free" hard drive upgrade to the 60gb 4200rpm hard drive. Is replacing the hard drive simple? I have read that it would be necessary to keep the other hard drive for warranty purposes. I was thinking the 60gb would be nice in an enclosure and used as an external hd. I also want to know if anybody else has done this type of setup. Thanks!

Yes the upgrade is simple. Unscrew a couple screws holding the cover on, disconnect the cable (can easily be done by hand with a little pressure), slide out old hard drive, slide in new one, reconnect cable, rescrew cover. Done.

And you should keep your old hard drive for warranty purposes - just get an external 2.5" case off newegg for $15 and you now have your external drive. And just to let you know, you can change to a 40 gb hard drive on P1 and save $50

hm...thanks for the info and tip =)

is it necessary to make an image of the oem drive or can i just start fresh and just install a copy of xp pro? i figure all the software necessary for the notebook to run will be included with the fujitsu right? thanks =)

You can fresh install any OS on there and the S2110 comes with a restore disk if you ever want to restore it.

Anyways, I received my S2110 a few days ago and also bought a 60GB 5400RPM Hitachi drive with an extra stick of 512MB ram. The ram installed fine, but when I installed the hard drive it was making loud whirring noises that actually sounded like coarse beeps. The S2110 didn't recognize the drive in the BIOS and Windows setup didn't detect it either. I am going to RMA the upgrade drive back to Newegg and am using the default 40GB drive that came with the machine.

It looks like though the drive I bought is not in stock at Newegg anymore so I might opt for the 80GB 5400RPM Hitachi for extra $20 or so.

By the way, is there an easier method to take the cable connectors out of the actual hard drive? The cable connectors are rather small so I have to pull on one side then the other but this started bending the pins on one edge. I also don't want to pull it with just by grabbing the cable because it feels like the cable is coming off of the actual connector as it just looks like it's soldered very lightly.

Just wondering for warranty purposes, the original oem hard drive needs to be installed in order to not void the warranty. Does the OS need to be running on it? Thanks

Good question. I'd like to know the answer to this too, since it's $100 cheaper (from Portable One) to buy it with XP home and not Professional.

Alright let's get back to the newegg hard drive enclosures! (Since this is originally my thread I am taking the liberty to direct the topic :))) )

Will this one work with the S2110 and the 40GB HDD that I replaced with a blazing fast Hitachi 7K100?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145329

It has an IDE interface, so it should work, right?

I was also thinking about buying some memory...what about that one:

    gigaram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820221205

What do you think. Thanks so much for your help. Alex!

enclosure will work fine. personally i have this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145124
it came for free with my 7K60 last year from ZZF, and works great and cool and its as small as possible without being smaller than the HDD :p.

as for the ram, I would advise to stick with the well known and tried brands. The probability is that any will work, but... :) (well known and tried: Crucial, Kingston, Corsair) On that note I have Kingmax and A-Data in my 2 lappys and both are running fine ;)
