I am planning on getting the S6210 laptop with the 1.6GHz processor and 768Mo of memory; however I am still hesitant on the hard drive I want/need: 60GB@7200rpm or 80GB@5400rpm...
The 80GB HD appeals to me as I don't think I would ever have to worry about lacking storage (I got a bunch of pictures & mp3).
But is the 7200rpm HD noticeably faster than the 5400rpm? and what about its impact on battery life?

    any help would be useful!

I would get the 7200. The speed difference is small, but nice to have and the battery impact is neglidgable.

Sounds like you are considering something like my configuration (in my signature).

I faced a similar question when configuring my system. I was either going to stick with the 40g 5400rpm drive that came with it or upgrade to the 60gig 7200rpm harddrive. I obviously went with the 7K60. I dont really have much to compare it to, but here is a little example. I powered up my desktop (HP Pavilion 750n= 1.6 P4, 512ram, 80gig ????rpm harddrive) and when it finally got to the login screen and logged in, I pushed the power button on my Fujitsu S6210. The Fujitsu was easily loaded up and ready to be used before the HP desktop.

I dont know as to whether this can all be contributed to the harddrive speed, but the results are interesting.

I dont have any regrets of getting the 7200rpm harddrive.

If you really think that 60gig will not be enough then you should get the 80gig. I will tell you that even though mine came with 60gigs, there are now only 49.9 free. There is a 2gig partition of the factory settings, and the operating system and the VERY FEW programs I installed take up the rest. Just a little food for thought.

Did I come close to answering your question?

I got the 80GB one, and it's faster then 4200RPM. 2 secs slower than 7200RPM on booting up Windows isn't exactly dead-or-alive situation, so it's fine(not that I tested myself).

Hard to compare....but I really like the 7K60. I've been running Diskeeper on it in the Smart mode and it is about as fast as my desktop with a 7200 HD and a slightly faster processor.

Now am I running any speed checks on it??? .........NO, just opening the same PS file and running a simple action (macro). Would the 5400 rpm drive difference be noticeable? Don't know....I'm just really pleased with the speed of the configuration I have. No buyer's remorse at all.

there is a good review at tomehardware.com on this subject and a link here somewhere.

I would suggest that boot times are not a good comparrision as different machnies are loading different drivers, a desktop probablly loads much more than a laptop.

The harddrive is the bottleneck in any system so it only makes sense the faster drive the better performance and tomshardware review indicated power was not an issue.

Just a reminder, the 5400RPM HD that used in this review is the older one, which doesn't have 8MB buffer, like the one sold on Portable One website. So, the performances are difference also.

What is the size of the buffer on the 7K60 drive?

I just double check it on the website.
Hitachi 7K60 and 5K80 both have 8MB buffer, listed in order.
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k60/7k60.htm
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/5k80/5k80.htm
while the other 3 HD used in the review are 2MB buffer.
    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=10&id=693&pg=2
so, do not confuse, the 5K80 w/ the 5400RPM harddrive in the review.
There is a huge improvement from 2MB to 8MB buffer alone.
