The laptop hunt continues (since i can't get the Acer 1691WLMi anytime soon!)....

Dabs.com have got the Amilo 1645g for £590.
Spec seems good (512mb, 80gb HD), but i'm wondering about the chip inside. It's an AMD Sempron 3300+ chip, about which i know nothing.

Am i right in thinking that the Fujitsu Siemens laptops are of good build quality? They seem pretty solid, and the screens get a good write-up from what i've heard. Also included is F-S's quiet fan technology, which can't be a bad thing.

Any comments / opinions would be much appreciated, as i reckon this is a great buy at the price.

    Cheers
    Raymond

Fujitsu Siemens makes good quality laptops. :)

The Sempron is a budget processor, in the same league as the Celeron M. I would recommend getting a Turion for better performance. However, a Sempron will be fine for basic productivity, watching movies and listening to music, but I wouldn't get it if I were planning to do anything CPU intensive, such as gaming, etc.

    Happy buying! ;)

    Thanks,

Now realising why the laptop is such a good price.
The Amilo A-1650 is an alternative then. It has the AMD Athlon 64 processor - am i right in thinking that this is more or less equivalent to the Intel Pentium M processor?

I can get the A-1650 from Comet for £700 - which is originally what i was going to spend on the Aspire 1691WLMi. Feeling now that the A-1650 might be a better buy than the Aspire in terms of build quality. Also, the screen on the Amilo seems sharper somehow than the Aspire.

I guess i'm just going to have to bite the bullet and go for a laptop.

    Cheers
    Raymond

Keep in mind that the Athlon 64 is a desktop processor, so you will have more heat and less battery life. However, it's definitely better than the Sempron (also a desktop processor in that laptop).

The Athlon 64 and the Pentium M don't really compare - PM's compare with AMD Turion's.
