I bought a Fujitsu N3500 Lifebook two months ago, and I have been having problems with the optical drive (Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ831). I don't use the drive frequently, but when I do I often get the message "drive not accessible",or "drive not ready". Tech support has advised me to take it to an authorized workshop for them to look at it, but before I do I want to know if mine is an isolated problem, or is it an issue with that brand of optical drive. Has anybody had his kind of experience?

We didn't have that problem with our N3510 and I haven't heard other people reporting it here.

    Hello
I get N3500 laptop for a month, and I have the same kind of problem indicated, when I put in my Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne Disk to run the application, it will show the disk is not accessible, but then after 2 - 5 retry, I can be able to run the application.

I have try to clean the disk before putting in the drive and I have try the disk in other computer and it works just fine.

But since I don't try to burn any disc from the drive yet, I can't comment on the other issue.

I have had several problems with this brand in the past, and I have also read about people having problems with it. It's is just that Mat$ita is really substandard. They have absolutey no support. they don't release new firmwares although they might be available (ie drives manufactured later will have a newer firmware that is not available for download for drives that came earlier off the manuf line).

Most of the problems that I had could have been solved by a simple firmware upgrade (certain media not supported, and some CDs/DVDs just refuse to be read), though I have read that some users have had their drives die on them too. Note this wasn't on Fujitsu laptops, it's actually on many brands, sony, toshiba ...

If you are having problems with it I would suggest a repair. Maybe you are lucky and they actually decide to replace it with some other brand.

I was so greatful that mine came with a toshiba drive, after the nightmares that I have had with Mat$hita.

Thank you all for your your postings. Now I know that Iam not alone in this problem. I wanted to avoid my new computer opened up by a tecnician for fear that other problems could arise, but I have no option. Thanks again.

I've had a couple of Panasonic drives, the UJ-845 and UJ-822. I have had no problems with them. You may want to try to update the firmware on the drive if one is available and/or the ide drivers can sometimes cause problems. You may want to try some different discs. Quality varies greatly. If Panasonic or Fujitsu has a supported media list, the discs that they say will work, then use those.
