Computer model AMILO L1310, Windows XP home
Some weeks ago the DVD drive would not read CD's or DVD's anymore. I cleaned the laser lense. It accepts the disc but after "reading" the disc there is no further action. I found an indication that this happens more often on some computers. But I cannot re-install a driver and Windows reports that everything is OK.
Any idea how to solve this problem, A complete re-install of Win XP is the last thing I want to do unless I am sure that this will cure the problem.

This may not work, but it is painless and easy.

Go into Device Manager, location the optical drive, right click, and select Remove.

Then reboot and let Windows find it and reintall it's drivers.

This works for some issues that can occur. Might help with your issue, but if it does not, it won't make things worse.....

Take any bootable CD or DVD and try to boot computer with it. If that doesn't work either the drive is most probably broken.
