Hi, I'm in the current process of getting an s7010d and was wondering if any other owned would know if this memory and hard drive would be compatible with the lap top.

    1gb kingmax memory
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820155111

    and 100gb 5400rpm seagate momentus
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146223

Anyone have any comments on the quality of these products? Also, is it an easy task to replace the hard drive (and add memory) or should I just I just shell out the extra money and have portable1 do it?

If anyone has guides on how to do these two processes, it would be nice if you could also provide a link. Thanks!

both upgrades seem compatible, and I see no problem why they shouldn't work.
As for how easy it is. It's pretty easy. Search for sutheep's review of the S7010 thru www.notebookreview.com homepage. He has a picture guide at the end of his review. So you can judge for your self.
No reason to shell out extra $ for something you can easily do for yourself and save a lot.

Well, I went ahead and ordered it today so hopefully it will come in two weeks :)

I was just perplexed by their offer for the "free" fingerscan security. I elected for having the finger scanner with the thought that they would just credit me back the 50 dollars during the billing part of the process... but turns out they didn't. I mean it's not a big deal because free or not, I was going to get it... but if they stated they were going to "upgrade" for free... why was it not free? heh. Oh well. I can't wait to get it!!!

    Thanks for all the tips!

I am not sure what you mean about the free upgrade. You are ordering from P1 right? It is included at the base price of 1499$ (fujitsu charge an extra 50$ for it --> total=1549$) and if you choose not to have the free upgrade they will give you -50$, so you still would be getting a deal even if you don't like the finger scanner.

I'd suggest the fingerprint scan. It can also be used as a scroll button :p

Skagen, it does cost less to upgrade yourself. However, P1 happens to warranty the upgrades they perform. Their prices are pretty competitive if you think about them that way, especially when you think about what kind of service you will get if the part fails. Hardly a waste of money if you are interested in buying that kind of service in addition to the hardware.

May be so, but their upgrade service (at least when I got my S6321 a couple months ago) was pretty limited and pricy for what you got.

Mind you you'd want to ask the question: "why does a laptop like the S6231 come standard with a 4200 40GB in the year 2005"? Is this a sneaky attempt to elicit upgrade business?

And as for the 100GB 5400 I'm putting in my laptop today they didn't offer it at the time, not even an 80GB/5400. Thew charge $30 more for it than I can pay for one shipped to me by Newegg. I've got 3 year warranty on this HD. I don't see what Portable one can do better than that. Mind you they are buying those things in bulk from Fujitsu and mine is full retail price!

If all these vendors want to step up to the plate in a proper way on upgrades, okay. But as it is, it seems to be a case of too little offered and too much charged. This goes for not just Portable one but all of these vendors out there.

So personally, I'm happy to buy my HDD or RAM off Newegg and pull out a screwdriver. I work far too hard to throw my money away.

I have never had good luck with manufacturer's warranties, so I was happy to pay a little more better service.

As for the laptop coming with the slowest drive possible, hey, that's the computer business. Fujitsu, dell, hp, etc. have to do something with all that stock on hand or incur big losses.

Like you, I don't appreciate "new" laptops coming with "old" drives when better technology exists. However, I do expect corporations to try and make all the money they can while cutting costs and losses, no matter what I think. They exist to make a profit and because they can make a profit.
