    Hi,

I just bought an Amilo 1818 with Windows Vista Home Premium but I am having trouble configuring it to automatically connect to my wireless network.

In Wireless Network Properties it says "Connect automatically when this network is in range" but nothing happens until I run Diagnose & Repair where it tells me that my wireless adapter is not switched on. If I choose Switch Wireless Adapter On everything then works. However the adapter was switched on in the first place as the LED was lit. If I switch the WLAN button off and then on again still nothing happens. The only way to connect is to either use Diagnose & Repair or by using Connect to a Network. I know the WLAN switch is working because if I turn it off it disconnects from the network but again the only way to reconnect again is to use Diagnose & Repair etc....

Short of using another wireless adapter I don't know what else to do. I am loathe to return the notebook for such a small problem because there may be a setting somewhere in Vista that I am missing. The properties for the wireless adapter appear fine.

There are two other computers connected to this network and they are both running XP Pro. One via a wireless adapter and one via an Ethernet cable. Neither of these computers have a problem connecting and once the Amilo is connected all three share the network with ease.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

For those interested I have "fixed" this problem albeit without totally understanding how.

I decided to use a USB wireless adapter and after configuring it I managed to get the notebook connecting automatically. I attached the adapter to a powered hub but I then noticed that if the powered hub was disconnected then the notebook still connected so to confirm this I removed the adapter from the hub, rebooted and the notebook still connected. The only thing that is different from before is that the adapter software still loads on startup - I didn't uninstall this.

As I say I don't quite understand why leaving the software/drivers for the USB adapter should have an effect on the notebooks own WLAN adapter but it clearly does.

    Strange.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I have a belkin usb adaptor for my other computer. Would you try installing it on my Amilo 1818 to see if it resolves the problem as yours did, or has anyone got any other solutions?

    Many thanks, Chris

    Hi Chris,

If I was you I would definitely give it ago as you have nothing to lose but, when you first try it, keep the Amilo's wireless adapter on.

After inputting my SSID and WEP keys everything worked perfectly and I then switched off the Amilo's own adapter and have not had a problem since.

I should point out that my wireless adapters are just cheap ones ebay.

    Hope it works for you.

Have you tried using a separate wireless adapter and basically overriding the Amilo's own one? That is what I have done and I have had no problems since.

You must install the drivers for the new adapter and then configure it with your own network settings. Then remove your cable and you should have wireless.

Comet are obliged to sell you a computer that is fit for the purpose for which it was bought and as it is advertised as having wireless communications, when the adapter is broken you are entitled to have Comet send it for repair. They, and FS, know that this is a specific fault. This is not an issue that a premium rate 0870 number can fix. The actual adapter is faulty.

Hopefully though if you can get a separate adapter your troubles will be gone. I just could not face a fight with Comet/FS at the moment.

Still not right though is it?

If you need any more help then please just ask.
