I was considering upgrading both the RAM and the HD (to a 7200rpm drive) for my M6805. My plan is to upgrade the RAM before the HD, but I would like to know what other people think of that. When I upgrade the RAM, I plan on replacing only the "user-accessible" slot. I would like to hear some opinions on the value of 512MB vs. 1GB of RAM. Would 512 give a significant performance boost for the $100? Is 1GB overkill?
I use some CAD and modeling programs as well as play Halo, UT2004, and Far Cry. That's the hardest core stuff I do.

Adding RAM will always improve performance on some level. Adding an additional 256 MB with 512 MB card is worthwhile, and you will see a marked performance increase, especially considering that XP and other preloaded software regularly hog about 200 MB of RAM right from bootup.
Adding a 1 GB card, however, takes more time to pause. The cheapest you can get a PC 2700 card is in the range of $350. That brings your system cost to close to $2000. Will you see a performance increase? Of course. Will it be worth your money? Some on this forum argue that breaking warranty and opening the case for the internal slot to upgrade to 2 GB is worth it. I tend to think that, at the present time, almost every person using this system will be extremely satisfied with a total of 1.256 GB of RAM.
Then again, you could always save that extra $200 between 512 mb and 1 gb and purchase a 60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive... -
Some folks on the forums have reported that no-frills brands do not work in eMachines notebooks. I probably would not trust this brand either. Even so, Crucial 512 MB PC 2700 goes for $95...it is still an approximate differential of $200.

$278 and free shipping. Has anyone tried it in an eMachines notebook? -
okay i just bought emachines 6810 for a pretty penny. the damned salesmen kept trying to push the 3 year ext warranty for 250$. They said the batteries for emachines are 400 to replace, and said I should really get the ext warranty. Were they full of crap, or is it worth the $$. Please advise....thx
