Anyone had any problem updating ram? I'm on the third chip and second manufacturer and when i install the new ram, all I get is the Emachines screen and it goes blank. The fan runs for a while but nothing else. Pop in the original ram and off it goes. One manf. sait to push harder into the slot, and I've done everything but get the shop hammer. Any suggestions?

whatever you do don't use to much pressure! that is something expensive to break. Just try to slide it in at a 45 degree angle and use equal pressure on both sides. It should be easy to tell if its really in all the way you shouldn't see the contacts sticking out maybe just a hair not much though. There might be another problem though. Its possible you need to update your bios, sometimes the bios dosen't support other brands of ram and won't accept them. That is an error because long as the ram is the correct type it should work, so just check on that with support.

Knowing emachines support as we all do, is there anywhere else to get a bios update? I've updated to xp pro. Any other suggestions. Thanks

What brand and type are you using? The laptop comes with Samsung. Others report that that brand works when others don't.

Also, is it PC2700? That's all that is officially supported, though I saw a post where the guy could use a single stick of PC3200, but not both sticks.

the accessable stick is a infeneon, and is listed as a pc2100 256 ddr on the sticker. I tried two sticks from crucial, and the one i have now is infineon. looks like a got shafted and got pc2100 memory doesn't it?

Sounds like it. What model notebook do you have? Why are you buying 256mb ram? That's what comes stock in our m68xx series notebooks. Here's a link to Crucial to help you figure out what you should be getting...

What a mess. Stock ram is Samsung PC2700, I just checked my 6809 to be sure. eMachines says that is all that is supported. I don't see how your notebook can even run on your supposed stock Infeneon pc2100. Sure you didn't mean pc2700? Are you sure you didn't return your original stock ram by mistake?

At this point I think I would exchange your Infeneon pc2700 for a Samsung PC2700. If that doesn't work then I would suspect the other buried memory stick is also pc2100. Did you buy a used, refurbished, or open box exchange? Somebody may have swapped out the ram before returning it.

nope, the infeion is what was in there when i opened the door to exchange the ram. I got the computer at Best Buy and it was sealed so hopefully you can trust it to be new. it has been back to emachines once for service with a video problem. other than that no one has messed with it. make me wonder if this was built on a friday" Throw anything in it and box it up"

That's odd. I'm guessing your pc2700 won't work because your other, buried ram chip is pc2100 and they can't be mixed.

My bios version is 0F05.P00 If you have that bios, or higher, I would think that pc2700 will work in your notebook, but you're going to have to replace that buried ram chip with pc2700 first/also.

my bios is ofo2.poo dated 12/17/2003 any suggestions to there to go to update it. I also ram a program and found the buried chip is a samsung 2700 and the removable is a infeon 2100 from the factory. Maybe a bios upgrade will help, as i have been thru 2 crucial ships, a microtech, and a infineion 2700 and 2100 all to nothing.
i don't think it is a "compadability problem" as the bright support staff at emachines say. the supervisor at memoryt4all says he has two to five calls a week with this same problem.

ran phoenix update and it accepted it and now accepts the 512mb microtek ram! Funny why the support people can't get this straight. Thanks a bunch. My only problem that seems to be a problem is my wireless mouse in the back usb ports has to be replugged in everytime on boot. Any suggestions, and this is a minor problem compared to the bios. Thanks again

Beats me. Mine came with the newer bios installed. You might try posting to that other thread if nobody here answers.
