here's the situation: I got this computer back when I lived in the states, and it has currently been through h3ll and is functionally a desktop now. the only problem is that the thing overheats waaaaay too easily. I've got a temp monitor installed (core temp 0.95), and it's showing the average reading somewhere around 57 C... sitting still, doing nothing. thats way too high to even consider doing any gaming on- which heats it up even further.

I can't get the fans to come on. that's my first complaint. is there any software I can use to manually turn these on and off?

second, since this computer is essentially a desktop now, has anybody tried water cooling an m6811? I've got the base knowledge of how to do it, but I'm curious if there's a better way than what I've thought of.

    thanks in advance.

I found the best thing for mine was to blow into all of the vent holes, the back ones especially. I was surprised as to how easy of a fix it was because after that it was as cool as the first day I bought it, when before I was burning my hand when I touched it.

The only difference was that my fans always worked, I dunno if yours is just a temporary clog or whatever.

typical m68xx issue. best thing is to take the thing apart, clean up the heatsink and fan and apply new thermal paste over the cpu

RMClock is good and free to use to monitor/control performance and heat

    Power setting, ACPI ...

    cheers ...

You mentioned it is a desktop, now. By chance do you have it tilted up on a stand. (Doing that makes my Gateway T-1628 core go to 100 degrees C very quickly and the power shuts off, even when the stand itself is ruled out--it is the angle alone that does it on mine).
