Hi,
I just saw the m6805 today at BB. I like the look of this laptop and the $250 rebate makes it quite a deal, but I'm not sure it will suit my immediate needs. I develop/build software on/for 32-bit linux systems. While I'd like to work with 64-bit stuff in the future, I am currently constrained to using 32-bit linux kernels, libs and apps. Also, at some point, I'd like to be able to do some opengl programming and take full advantage of the accelerated graphics processor, on linux.
I've heard others have had problems with getting everything on the m6805 to work with 64-bit linux. Like accelerated 3d graphics and ACPI, in particular! I have had three TFT LCD displays fail on me due to backlight burn out, so I *really* want the backlight to shut off when the system is idle. This is a deal breaker.
I was hoping that the problems people have been seeing might be 64-bit related and that I might avoid them by sticking with 32-bit software for the time being. But, I suspect this is just wishful thinking on my part.
I've mostly convinced myself to move on to some other laptop, but thought I should ask here just in case someone might have some 32-bit experiences that will change my mind. I do like the look of this laptop!
Thanks in advance!
Fred
