Hello, I have been reading the various threads here for awhile, enjoying everyone's input and comments. Very helpful. THanks to everyone. My first post:

Well, I just got this refurb about 2 months ago (m6811) and It was working fine a month ago, but over the past week It has been shutting off out of nowhere. whether I am using it to record or playback audio, or making sure the firewire drive works (so far no luck there either), this thing shuts itself off. It has happened about once or twice, every two days or so over the past week.

I have 1.25 gb ram with the stock 4200 RPM drive, USb mouse, keyboard, hard drive connected. The fan turned on loudly for a moment and then the system shut down. Is there a heat problem? I have it sitting on a wooden desk, and I don't quite know how to monitor temps or fan settings.
Do i need a laptop cooler of some kind, is something wrong with the internal cooling system perhaps?

OH, YES the thing is plugged into the wall with a full battery charge in case you think I am a total newbie. :)
Any thoughts, suggestions, comments, ideas, troubleshooting tips welcomed. Thanks!

I would say it's the power supply. Since you have it plugged in and it still shuts off. I had an HP that would lock up every day, but yours is actually just cutting out on you and turning off. Are all your fans are currently running?

It might be overheating as well, make sure the vents are clear. If so, I'd try support to see what they have for you, you might need to send it in.

vents are clear, the laptop is on a desk, i don't know if ALL the fans are on because I have only had this machine for a couple of months, and usually I am recording audio so I can't even hear them when they are on. There is definately one fan that is usually on. I would hope its a power supply issue and not some processor-damaging heating problem. So should I contact emachines? I might as well, find out if i'm screwed or not.

    Thanks for the help

Yes you should. Not only that, but check the warranty on it also. Some refurbs like that come with a 30day, 90day and sometimes 1 year warranty.

This is a common problem. Scroll down two or three threads to the 6805 Shutdown/Hibernation thread, read and follow the link.
