I play Warcraft 3 for 5 hours on my lap and it gets a little bit warm but I still can keep it and it does not bother me. Not sure if you really need a cooling pad. When I run matlab simulations for 10 hours, so that the processor gets used all the time, then it gets hot and that is probably the only time when you probably need some cooling, currently I do without it though.

I do some video authoring/burning and use a Vantec Lapcool to keep the temps down. I'm very pleased with the product, it has 2 fans, an aluminum surface and USB ports. It's not that noisy and seems to help keep the bottom from getting so hot. I think I got it from New Egg for about $30.
